Caveats

1. I am just technical enough to be dangerous.

Caveats

1. I am just technical enough to be dangerous.

2. Some of these tools are labeled "experimental" by their owners

The Goal

Let each tool do what it does best...

...and then make them play nicely together.

(oh...and work completely in the UI)

How-to

DSpace and Google Fusion

DSpace & Google Fusion

Start with: a collection in DSpace1. Export the metadata2. Enhance the metadata3. Import the csv to Google Fusion4. Click on Visualize5. Set preferences6. Get embeddable link7. Add embeddable link to DSpace collectionRepeat 5-7 as needed.

1. Export the Metadata

Page 19: Collections Amplified: Exhibiting data using DSpace, Viewshare and Google Fusion Tables

1. Export the Metadata

The metadata from the export might be a little...messy. In this case, the metadata was added to the collection using two separate methods, and so the columns aren't quite lined up.

Page 20: Collections Amplified: Exhibiting data using DSpace, Viewshare and Google Fusion Tables

2. Enhance the Metadata

So, we fix it before we try to upload it anywhere.

Page 21: Collections Amplified: Exhibiting data using DSpace, Viewshare and Google Fusion Tables

3. Import the .csv to Google Fusion

Two options:1. Go to http://www.google.

com/fusiontables/Home/

2. Go to drive.google.com, and click on Create > Other > Fusion Table

Page 22: Collections Amplified: Exhibiting data using DSpace, Viewshare and Google Fusion Tables

3. Import the .csv to Google Fusion

3. Import the .csv to Google Fusion

Page 24: Collections Amplified: Exhibiting data using DSpace, Viewshare and Google Fusion Tables

3. Import the .csv to Google FusionOops! Whatever program you use to enhance the data may use its own separator by default - looks like we need to indicate that a semi-colon is our data delimiter.

So, click on Back and try again, with ";" designated

3. Import the .csv to Google Fusion

3. Import the .csv to Google Fusion

Now, we have a Google Fusion Table.

Page 28: Collections Amplified: Exhibiting data using DSpace, Viewshare and Google Fusion Tables

4. Click on Visualize

For our example, we want a Map visualization, so we go to Visualize > Map.

Page 29: Collections Amplified: Exhibiting data using DSpace, Viewshare and Google Fusion Tables

5. Set preferences

6. Get embeddable link

Page 32: Collections Amplified: Exhibiting data using DSpace, Viewshare and Google Fusion Tables

6. Get embeddable link

This will not work unless the table is shared. Google is pretty good about warning you if the table isn't shared, but if you're having trouble, check the access setup.

Page 33: Collections Amplified: Exhibiting data using DSpace, Viewshare and Google Fusion Tables

6. Get embeddable link

This is the link we want. Highlight the text and copy it.

Page 34: Collections Amplified: Exhibiting data using DSpace, Viewshare and Google Fusion Tables

7. Add embeddable link to DSpace

Page 35: Collections Amplified: Exhibiting data using DSpace, Viewshare and Google Fusion Tables

7. Add embeddable link to DSpace

Paste the link in one of the HTML fields. Click on Save Updates at the bottom of the page.

Page 36: Collections Amplified: Exhibiting data using DSpace, Viewshare and Google Fusion Tables

7. Add embeddable link to DSpace

You may notice, something went very wrong. Here's why: the embeddable link only contains information as attributes, there's nothing between the tags. So, click the back button and type some text in between the two iframe tags. I usually put "This browser does not support frames." just before the </iframe> tag, but you could write "KISS rules" if you wanted. Also make sure that all the ampersands show as & and not &amp;

Page 37: Collections Amplified: Exhibiting data using DSpace, Viewshare and Google Fusion Tables

7. Add embeddable link to DSpace

Page 38: Collections Amplified: Exhibiting data using DSpace, Viewshare and Google Fusion Tables

7. Add embeddable link to DSpace

So, we have our map and our info windows, but we probably don't want to display it like this to our users. So, let's fix it. Head back into Google Fusion Tables, and click on "Configure Info Window"

Page 39: Collections Amplified: Exhibiting data using DSpace, Viewshare and Google Fusion Tables

Repeat Step 5. Set preferences

Page 40: Collections Amplified: Exhibiting data using DSpace, Viewshare and Google Fusion Tables

Repeat Step 5 - Set Preferences

Here, you can change the labels and use HTML to change the display - for example, to display links as links. Then, click on Save.

Page 41: Collections Amplified: Exhibiting data using DSpace, Viewshare and Google Fusion Tables

Refresh DSpaceNo need to re-embed the link, just refresh the collection page in the browser.

5. Create a viewOnce you've uploaded the data, click the "Build" link next to it. This will allow you to build a view. For this example, we'll click on Timeline below.

Page 49: Collections Amplified: Exhibiting data using DSpace, Viewshare and Google Fusion Tables

5. Create a view

Select the fields that you'd like to use as your parameters along the left side and then Save button is on your upper right.

7. Embed link in DSpace collection

Note, this is the same issue as the <iframe> tags from Google fusion. Some text needs to be in between the tags.
