The Blackwing pencil was introduced in the 1930’s by Eberhard

Faber and was the pencil of choice for Oscar, Grammy, and Pulitzer

Prize winners throughout the 20th century. After it was discontinued

in the 1990’s, fans began paying as much as $40 per pencil to seize

unused stock.

Artists from across the world soon noticed that Palomino’s range

of premium graphite drawing pencils provided a comparable

performance to the Blackwing and asked them to consider bringing

back the iconic eraser and ferrule. In 2010, California Cedar Products

Company, whose industry roots were planted nearly 100 years ago,

revived the Blackwing under their Palomino division to much

crit ical acclaim.

Now, these iconic Blackwing pencils are available in three different

models: the Blackwing (soft and smooth for artists and composers),

the Blackwing 602 (firm yet smooth for writers and everyday users),

and the new Blackwing Pearl (balanced and smooth performance

for those who want something in between). Every Blackwing pencil

This is the story of the pencil that inspired the revival of the Blackwing 602.

When they were released, Palomino’s premium graded graphite drawing

pencils received heaps of praise thanks to their sleek look and ability

to lay down a smooth, solid line. One reviewer was so pleased with

Palomino’s new line of pencils she compared them to the legendary

Eberhard Faber Blackwing 602.

At the heart of every Palomino pencil is the world’s finest Japanese

crafted graphite core. This core is encased in Genuine California

Incense-cedar and finished with a smooth lacquer, giving every

Palomino pencil exceptional sharpening performance and the look

of quality that has become synonymous with the Palomino name.

Alongside its Palomino graded graphite drawing pencils, Palomino

introduced Palomino color & watercolor pencils. Then, in 2011, Palomino

Before there were other FSC-certified pencils, there was ForestChoice,

the world’s first Forest Stewardship Council-certified pencil.

In 1999, Cal Cedar introduced the ForestChoice pencil as a high-quality,
