MILESTONES

• I am suggesting that we set up targets and goals over a three-year period that do two things:

• 1. Align what we do with our strategic plan (and the 5 year teacher development plan)

• 2. Align what we do with the timeline of the next ERO review.

Page 3: COLLATION OF MAGS STAFF ERO REVIEW COMMENTS

3

• We need to focus on goals that will address both of the above.

• BIG IDEAS FROM LAST REVIEW• ACHIEVEMENT - Milestone yearly TARGET IDEA• UNDERACHIEVEMENT - Milestone yearly TARGET IDEA• STUDENT VOICE Milestone sub-group of SMT gather info FEEDBACK GOAL• MAGS WAY Milestone - link to new curriculum• BEHAVIOUR - Milestone - other initiatives will help eg Resilience • DISCIPLINE - Milestone - other initiatives will help• ENGAGEMENT Milestone - other initiatives will help: THINKING,

CO-OPERATIVE LEARNING• DIFFERENTIATION Milestone - other initiatives will help: THINKING,

CO-OPERATIVE LEARNING• DATA - Milestone - REGULAR PART OF WHAT WE DO

– INITIATIVES - Milestone– EVALUATION OF PROGRAMMES Milestone

• COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Milestone FEEDBACK• PASIFIKA Milestone ALL THREE GOALS• ICT - Milestone ALL THREE GOALS• CLASS SIZES - Milestone• TEACHING - Milestone ALL THREE GOALS• ALTERNATIVE PATHWAYS - Milestone EVALUATION

4

Level 1 achievement well below national average x4 N

Level 1 results below average N

Not achieving the same as other school groups N

Underachieving at level 1 especially N

Above national average for L2 and L3 POS

Greater use of external achievement to monitor results POS

students at level 2 and 3 are achieving well above the national average POS

Report reads well but are we really helping underachieving students? SUB

ACHIEVEMENT - milestone

Direct link to underachievement …

The target should include those students who are failing

Page 5: COLLATION OF MAGS STAFF ERO REVIEW COMMENTS

5

UNDERACHIEVEMENT - milestone

Ensuring that underachieving students do have adequate interventions in place to prevent falling through the cracks

PRIO

If we don't succeed in lifting underachievers, all the initiatives of 2006 will end up in areas of improvement

N

Underachieving by some groups compared to other groups in the school N

•This was based on 2006 data 2007 data needs to be factored (another reason to set targets in the New Year)

•Can we look at our successful students and see what they do as models for those who are underachieving? ie a RESILIENCE model?

•Peer tutoring Y13 of Y11?

•Academic Institute Y13 meet with Y10 and Y9

Page 6: COLLATION OF MAGS STAFF ERO REVIEW COMMENTS

STUDENT VOICE Milestone School links to student voices PRIO

Encourage more positive opinions from students and staff towards MAGS

N

Feelings about the school from students N

Listening to the students and their needs at all levels not just Y13 - maximise school council effectively

N

no voice for students' feelings SUB

opportunities for students to contribute ideas about aspirations and challenges are few

SUB

• Where can students have an opportunity to have their say?

• Student council, student newspaper, myclasses, environment group, feedback to teachers, prefects, organising events (Fluoro Days), Music, Performing Arts, Forums

• How can we put structures in place? Student Council? ‘The Roar’? myclasses? Special Groups?

MAGS WAY milestoneMAGS Way is +ve and reinforced through different avenues POS

reinforcing MAGS Way POS

Teaching of values - buy-in by staff/students/parents PRIO

Reinforcing MAGS Way POS

Putting up posters does not make it real. Build relationships. Who is not in the poster?

SUB

• Perhaps the MAGS Way is a vehicle for increased student voice? Eg Respect the Environment could be a vehicle for students to have their voice heard.

• Each MAGS Way principle can be given to students to develop

Page 8: COLLATION OF MAGS STAFF ERO REVIEW COMMENTS

BEHAVIOUR - milestone Behaviour management system needs to be based on current research and is not evaluated for effectiveness

PRIO

Behaviour expectations/statistics - no info - stand-downs etc N

Behaviour management N

Effectiveness of systems to change behavour N

Tension between control and respect N

Behaviour management system POS

Behaviour management system POS

Behavour management system POS

• Good example of differing perceptions by staff about behaviour - probably needs to be unpacked further - paticularly in the light of the next slide ….

• If we benchmark the negative comments and try the positive strategies, these sorts of feedback can be gathered again

Page 9: COLLATION OF MAGS STAFF ERO REVIEW COMMENTS

9

DISCIPLINE - Milestonealternative discipline methods to be implemented PRIO

report says discipline is good but feeling is that it is not an effective system - long way to go

PRIO

conflict between traditional disciplinarian model and a culture of respect that the MAGS Way is meant to be reinforcing

N

This links to BEHAVIOUR to the MAGS WAY, to student engagement and to motivation.

Page 10: COLLATION OF MAGS STAFF ERO REVIEW COMMENTS

10

ENGAGEMENT milestone

lots of structural 'engagement in learning' changes needed - impact of these PRIO

Student engagement PRIO

Support of students wellbeing - since 'ambulance at the bottom' mentality PRIO

Monitoring of student engagement - consequences for unengaged/disruptive students

N

I suggest three things in 2008

1. Thinking - Term 1

2. Co-operative Learning - Term 2

3. Feedback - Term 3

• I believe that we can measure some base line data with staff as far as their classroom activites are concerned. This data can be gahtered at a staff meeting but staff need to be able to unpack the questions first. A mixture of closed and open responses. This same tool can be used to measure staff post the PD

Page 11: COLLATION OF MAGS STAFF ERO REVIEW COMMENTS

11

DIFFERENTIATION milestonecatering for individual needs - differentiation PRIO

focus on level 1 achievement/link to more suitable courses for lower achievers PRIO

teaching them at their level in ways that they relate to PRIO

Meeting individual needs - this is why we have streaming? SUB

What does 'meeting individual needs' really mean? Are we not meeting them? SUB

How long can ‘one size fit all’ work for all lessons?

Differentiation can occur through COURSE DESIGN, CONTENT, PROCESS or OUTCOME

Perhaps the Thinking tools are the way to differentiate? Eg

Thinking maps, Think-Its, Thinkers’ Keys are all ways that demand different approaches

ERO are going to ask us what we are doing for our Gifted and talented as well as our Pasifika students

Page 12: COLLATION OF MAGS STAFF ERO REVIEW COMMENTS

INITIATIVES - milestoneInitiatives aimed at lifting at risk student achievement POS

Initiatives have begun well. Praised for their variety POS

Initiatives aimed at lifting at risk student achievement POS

linking required to analyse why new initiatives are taking place POS

Manuka Project POS

Manuka project - good start POS

Manuka Project - keep developing this POS

school has promoted initiatives eg Manuka Project POS

tracking of Manuka students needs a pathway through the entire school PRIO

The Manuka classes need to be to a certain extent experimental

Page 13: COLLATION OF MAGS STAFF ERO REVIEW COMMENTS

13

DATA - milestoneUse Asttle to build from what we know POS

Ensuring that data collected is used correctly not at the bottom of a briefcase or department backup

PRIO

incorporate asttle into year's programme to measure growth/ learning PRIO

display/dissemination of student data N

No data about the retention and attendance N

Tracking N

data gathering and analysis specifically from students, of their experiences. N

Excellent comments particularly when we add how much we have learnt about asttle this year.

Data gathering project with local Intermediate schools

The most important question is;

What is the purpose of gathering data?

Page 14: COLLATION OF MAGS STAFF ERO REVIEW COMMENTS

14

EVALUATION OF PROGRAMMES milestone using baseline data, during and at milestone points

Identify how well or how poorly the initiatives are working PRIO

Monitoring academic progress PRIO

We need a methodology to measure the success of the programmes N

mentions systems in place but not if evaluation is done of effectiveness SUB

Several interventions but no definitive measuring of these or a timeframe for measuring them

SUB

Some links to DATA gathering

If we make changes we need to measure them and know how to do that before we start.

Page 15: COLLATION OF MAGS STAFF ERO REVIEW COMMENTS

15

FEEDBACK to staff goal this year milestoneinvolvement of students in the feedback/assessment (3-way conferences)

POS

more explicit feedback of analysis POS

Not much feedback to departments on analysis of results POS

These are all positives but …..

Do individual teachers need some techniques?

Links to data gathering techniques in an NCEA environment and also … links to student voice if you consider a range of different types of data: Feedback Surveys, Questionnaires, Qualitative, Quantitative, Ach. Std results

Page 16: COLLATION OF MAGS STAFF ERO REVIEW COMMENTS

Still don't see the parents that we want to see N

access to translators for communication assistance with parents POS

MAGS parents has much untapped potential POS

parent involvement in sport/cultural activities POS

Village mentoring - What is this exactly? POS

Village mentoring Initiative POS

No mention of parental involvement/inclusion in pastoral care - mentions access only

SUB

This is a big issue when we consider the number of comments

MAGS Parents links

Page 17: COLLATION OF MAGS STAFF ERO REVIEW COMMENTS

17

PASIFIKA 1 milestoneimproving teachers' awareness of Pacifica teaching and learning styles PRIO

Pacifica student voice/ surveys etc PRIO

Improve the numbers coming to Polynesian parent meetings N

lack of consultation contact with pacific parents N

lack of feedback from Pacific students N

Lack of information on Pacific students within the school available to staff and to track performance

N

more positive male Pacifica role models N

Pacific Liaison needs to be more proactive in discussing with teachers regarding Pacific students' achievement

N

Teachers lack of background knowledge of Pacific students culture and their Intermediate school achievements

N

SUB

Page 19: COLLATION OF MAGS STAFF ERO REVIEW COMMENTS

19

PASIFIKA 3 - milestoneno links with Pacific parents SUB

Pacific students coming to school to essentially play Sport SUB

Samoan classes? Useful? Achieving? SUB

Still not catering sufficiently for the needs of Maori/Pacifica students SUB

we don't know anything about our Pacific students SUB

We already have links to Pasifika parents and Pasifika teachers. We need to build on these.

23

CLASS SIZES - milestoneClass sizes PRIO

Class sizes PRIO

Class sizes N

Manuka project is stymied by over-large class sizes N

Smaller class sizes N

increase in classes with roll growth SUB

Clearly a concern for some teachers

What does research say?

Dale’s paper interesting but important to keep in mind the other pressures that we place on staff who teach five sets of 30 in a class

Page 24: COLLATION OF MAGS STAFF ERO REVIEW COMMENTS

ALTERNATIVE PATHWAYSAssess Successmaker and Gateway PRIO

Gateway systems for students wanting to leave in a positive light not a as a dropout

PRIO

Assess the validity and success of Successmaker and Gateway N

Gateway has been listed as support for students that are underachieving but is supposed to be an alternative pathway for students exploring the world of work

N

Gateway programme for students ready to leave school N

Successmaker and Gateway need to be measured for their efficacy. If they work, extend them. If results are minimal put the energy elsewhere

N

ERO is questioning the value of Successmaker and Gateway in the school SUB

Gateway is being used for underachieving students when it is not supposed to be the case and is not

SUB
