CollageCollage is a form of visual art that assembles different

forms resulting in a new whole.

A collage may include newspaper clippings, ribbons, bits of colored or hand-made papers, portions of other

artwork, photographs and other found objects. These are then glued to a piece of paper or canvas.

The term collage derives from the French "coller," meaning glue.

Matisse(Dec. 31, 1869 - Nov. 3, 1954)

In 1941 Matisse was diagnosed with cancer and following surgery, started using a wheelchair. With the use of assistants, Matisse started creating cut-outs. His

assistants would paint sheets of white paper and he would cut out coloured elements and place them onto

paper.

Romare Bearden(Sept. 2, 1911-March 12, 1988)

Romare Bearden was an African-American artist and writer. During the 1960s civil rights movement, Bearden began experimenting with the form of

collage. His work became more representational and more overtly socially conscious towards Black rights.
