HONORING

ANN MOORE

This year we will be honoring Ann Moore for contributing and enriching the community of the Rio Grande Valley along with her lifetime of service to IMAS. In its 35th anniversary, Collage is one of the longest running fundraisers and most eagerly anticipated social events of the year. All funds raised at Collage enable the museum to continue creating an inspirational legacy by providing life enhancing art and science exhibitions, educational programs, and cultural events serving to stimulate the imagination of our visitors.

IMAS has delighted visitors by featuring the finest art and science exhibitions while providing exceptionally engaging educational programs since its establishment in 1967. IMAS is the only Smithsonian Affiliated museum south of San Antonio and the only institution in the Rio Grande Valley that is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM). Over 70,000 people visit IMAS on an annual basis, with half consisting of school children ranging from 4-12 years of age. For students who are unable to visit the museum, IMAS offers an exciting outreach program that brings our portable state-of-the-art Magic Planet exhibition into the classroom, enhancing the learning experience of an additional 4,000 children a year. We continue our community engage-ment every summer by partnering with the City of McAllen and offering our popular Operation Imagination summer camp providing an additional 800 children with unique, hands-on learning experiences.

We seek your support to further our mission of providing excellent world-class artist exhibi-tions, educational programming and other cultural events to the Rio Grande Valley that chal-lenge, inspire, and motivate our entire community.

The Internat ional Museum of Art & Sc ience (IMAS) wishes to warmly extend the opportun ity to become a corporate sponsor for “COLLAGE 2013: A Legacy of Inspirat ion” .

A LEGACY OF INSPIRATION:ANN MOORECOLLAGE 2013 HONOREE

Ann Maddox Moore, the City of McAllen, and IMAS have been intertwined for nearly a lifetime. Ann grew up in McAllen, playing in the orchards and riding her bike along the canal banks of the sleepy south Texas town. After graduating from McHi, she attended the Univer-sity of Texas in Austin where she honed her art skills and attained her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. When New York City beckoned, Ann answered the call. She moved to NYC to study fashion drawing, a program that combined her love of design and fashion. Eventually, Ann made her way back to the Valley during the era when “good girls” got married and had chil-dren. Ann followed the tradition and raised her children into three accomplished adults. In the 1960s Ann began indulging her collecting urge with modest purchases of contemporary art. Her passion for collecting grew and became more voracious from the 1970’s to the pres-ent. Her collection includes contemporary art, contemporary crafts, Mexican Folk Art, and artist made jewelry and textiles.

In the late 1960’s, while the hippies were rocking at Woodstock and Armstrong was landing on the moon, Ann, with other members of the Junior League of McAllen, helped plant the seeds for the organization of a community museum. From its humble beginnings, in a former detention center on the west side of town, this fledgling community museum became today’s IMAS: the region’s premier resource for fine art and scientific education. Ann later served as chairman on the museum’s Board of Trustees. Over the decades, her support for IMAS has never wavered, from writing a check or rolling up her sleeves to cook for one of the first Col-lage events, to painting objects for the education room’s expansion, or lending pieces from her considerable contemporary art and fashion collection for a one-woman exhibit. Ann has been a staunch supporter from the museum’s inception. Ann continues her passionate avoca-tion for the arts and IMAS, most recently donating her extensive collection of Mexican Folk Art to the museum.

Ever the creative spirit, Ann still lives in the art-filled, lushly landscaped house she helped design in 1959. She keeps on creating art with the help of two assistants and continues to grow, improve and edit her collections; always finding the time to dote on her grandchildren, to socialize with her friends over a good bottle of wine, to support the community she loves, and to travel to see new and wonderful art around the world. Ann Moore is a legacy of inspi-ration to her friends, McAllen, and IMAS.

ARTS & SCIENCES THROUGH OUR EXHIBITIONS, CULTURAL EVENTS, AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING

OUR MISSION

TO PROMOTE A DEEPER APPRECIATION FOR THE

THE LEGACY PROJECT

IMAS has a long and illustrious legacy as the premier cultural institution of the Rio Grande Valley. That legacy is the result of the vision and civic commitment of its founders. When the ladies of the Junior League of McAllen conceived the idea of creating a museum over 45 years ago, they too set out on a path to create an intergenerational legacy. As we approach the half century mark, the Board of Trustees and the IMAS staff seek to create a historic document to record the memories of those visionary founders. In furtherance of this mission, we are commencing the Legacy Project. Over the next five years, we will be recording interviews and remembrances of the people who have played important roles in the founding and the devel-opment of the International Museum of Art & Science over the last fifty years. For our 50th anniversary, we will produce a documentary film that sets forth the history of the institution and honors the vision and commitment of those who have contributed so much to the civic life of their community and made the noble work of the museum possible. If you know of people who should be included in this endeavor, or have memories and stories of your own that you wish to tell, please contact us so we may include them in this important Legacy Proj-ect.
