WHAT IS COLLABORATIVE PROBLEM

SOLVING?

This three-day training is intended for

clinicians, social workers, educators, and

front line staff members who are interested

in becoming more proficient in the

innovative and evidence-based approach to

understanding and helping children and

adolescents with severe behavioral

challenges as described in the book,

Treating Explosive Kids: The Collaborative

Problem Solving Approach.

CPS is a process by which adults and

children/youth resolve problems together.

When problems are approached

collaboratively, solutions are durable and

address lagging skills that get in the way of

success.

CPS Trainers

Anik Thibaudeau has a teaching degree (B.Ed.) from Laurentian University as well as a Master’s degree (M.A.) in Human Development from that same University. She also completed most of the course work for a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Laval University. She has been working at the Roberts/Smart Center since 2001. Though she has worked in a variety of programs previously and currently offered by the Roberts/Smart Centre, Mrs. Thibaudeau is now the Clinician assigned to the Centre’s bilingual residential program and the francophone day treatment program. The Roberts/Smart Centre has developed an expertise in helping adolescents who have severe behavioural and emotional problems and for whom other interventions have failed. The clients who are admitted to the Roberts/Smart Centre are among the most troubled of our youth. Their depression, anger, aggression and/or addictions make them “high risk” – they have lost their way on the path to becoming healthy productive adults. Mrs. Thibaudeau is a certified Tier I trainer with the Massachusetts’s General Hospital's Think Kids program.

Cathy Lonergan has worked in social services for over 20 years. The last four years as a Case Coordinator with the Ottawa Children’s Coordinated Access and Referral to Services. OCCARS is a case resolution mechanism for the most complex children and youth in the community bringing together mental health agencies, developmental services and education. Cathy also has worked as a Provincial Autism Consultant for the Geneva Centre for Autism, an itinerant for the Ottawa Catholic School Board and for 21 years with the Ottawa Carleton Association for Persons with a Developmental Disability in various programs; residential, respite and day programs. Cathy is a certified Tier I trainer with the Massachusetts’s General Hospital's Think Kids program.

Focusing on:

Providing an in-depth exposure to both the assessment and intervention components.

Practicing drilling down to identify specific problems to be solved.

Practicing identifying the specific cognitive skill deficits contributing to challenging behavior.

Learning how to solve problems and train skills using the collaborative problem solving process.

Practicing indirect skills training with personalized feedback from trainers.

Troubleshooting Plan B.

Additional Topics Include:

Strategies for when a child refuses or has difficulty expressing his/her concerns.

Dealing with common resistances to the approach.

Troubleshooting other barriers to implementation in systems.

Integrating with other models (such as Positive Behavioral Supports).

Implementation in groups such as classrooms and transforming system-wide disciplinary policies.

Opportunities for continued learning and networking.
