Introduction
| Capability Statement2
Collaborative Car Parking is an offer brought to you
by Aedas RHWL, Hill Cannon and Hannan Associates;
arising out of the design and delivery of two
signifi cant Multi-Storey Car Park (MSCP) schemes
delivered by the respective consultants in quick
succession in 2014.
We believe that the old adage of; ‘it’s just a car park’,
no longer applies.
Today’s car parks are key components of the urban
design of an area; often being the fi rst building
constructed as part of an area’s regeneration or a
new scheme. The car park subsequently becomes
an advert for the quality of the coming development,
thus these structures need to be as innovative as
possible and of equal design quality to the buildings
of the wider scheme that will follow.
A modern car park needs to be user friendly,
adaptable, and able to react to both new technology
and the evolving ergonomics of vehicles.
We are offering a collective consultant team with a
proven and very recent track record for the delivery of
MSCP of the highest quality on complex urban sites -
backed up by a historic pedigree of delivering similar
parking schemes.
We aim to build on the excellent working relationships
that have been developed during the recent work
undertaken together, offering a more effi cient design
process, born out of the familiarity and knowledge of
the individual team members.
We welcome any opportunities to present our
collective approach to your organisation.

About Hill Cannon
Hill Cannon have been designing car parks for over
forty fi ve years with the current partners, Glynn
Rhodes and Steve Vollar, overseeing some major
changes in car park design and are able to call on
the experience of a dedicated team of engineers and
parking technicians to develop a bespoke solution for
any proposed scheme.
From their background as structural engineers, they
have been able to evolve functional, effi cient and cost
effective design solutions for the operational aspects
of a car park. This involves developing a brief with
the Client and then optimising the use of the site to
achieve the required parking numbers, to adhere to an
agreed budget and to design a parking facility that is
well lit, has a clear layout and is user-friendly.
The design parameters include a service level
determination which can range from basic to
enhanced, to suit location, nature of use and, where
applicable, to scale of charging.
Hill Cannon developed and patented a unique vehicle
circulation system, VCM, now widely adopted as ideal
for small to medium sized car parks.
Advanced pre-cast concrete solutions have been
designed to cater for off-site construction techniques
and quality fi nishes. Recent developments include
the design of automated parking systems as a design
alternative.

New Bailey MSCP is the fi rst building of the commercial zone of the New Bailey
Masterplan to be delivered; replacing existing surface car parking and freeing up land
for future development plots.
It is a nine storey facility providing 620 car parking spaces, arranged around a two
way Vertical Circulation Module (VCM) system, including disabled spaces, an area
for motorcycle parking and 6 electric car charging points. The building sits next to a
grade II* listed railway viaduct and a major road intersection which was redeveloped in
tandem with the building.
The car park serves users of Salford Central station as well as the wider development.
The building attempts to do away with the preconceptions of ‘normal’ car park
architecture to provide something that is a precursor to the quality of the future
buildings of the masterplan. The building utilises perforated aluminium cladding, which
wraps round the building in a pattern infl uenced by both the circulation of the building
and the local industrial architecture and bridges.
Construction commenced in mid-February 2014 with practical completion achieved at
the beginning of December 2014.
The project was recently featured on the January 2015 edition of Parking Review as the
cover story.

| Capability Statement12
As part of Phase 1 of the Stockport Exchange development, the MSCP
provides a new 1,000 space facility over six levels, with circulation
arranged around a one way Vertical Circulation Module (VCM)s system,
allowing for an effi cient footprint to the building. The car park includes
an area for motorcycle parking, electric car charging points and a secure
cycle storage facility with changing facilities and lockers.
The car park acts as the catalyst for the rest of the development, as
it allowed the disparate surface parking to be amalgamated into one
location, thereby clearing large areas of the site for future phases.
The façade uses Stockport’s signifi cant history as a major centre of the
textile industry as the thematic driver for its elevations. This takes the
form of a pattern across the façade, created by weaving expanded metal
mesh strips between horizontal bars; forming prefabricted cladding
panels, which are then arrayed in a specifi c pattern.
The aim was to provide a visual screen that is broken down into smaller
segments, which also allows fresh air and light to penetrate into the
car park. This is an environmentally friendly solution as it removes
mechanical ventilation requirements and reduces artifi cial lighting levels.

Delivered as part of the fi rst phase of the St Paul’s Square
Central Business District development, the 400 space MSCP
provides parking for both the adjacent residential building and
the commercial offi ce buildings of the Square.
The effi cient two way circulation of the building allows the car
park to be accommodated on an extremely constrained site.
The design is in-keeping with the high design quality of the rest
of the development; with the building’s façade clad in timber
- a more sustainable material - thus following the “green”
aspirations of the rest of the Masterplan.
The timber elevations have a pattern of repeating open slots,
which enhance natural daylight into the building and negate the
need for the building to be mechanically ventilated.

Southwater
Telford / UK
Built into a seven metre high embankment, the
Southwater Car Park incorporates a one-way VCM
type circulation that equally addresses areas
of pedestrian public realm and main vehicular
thoroughfares on both sides of the building.
The MSCP houses an integral retail unit and provides
some 600 spaces to service the town centre and
Southwater development itself. The structure was
designed in a manner that means future expansion
is wholly possible yet with minimum disruption to the
concurrent operation of the Car Park.
The material palette of the building has three main
elements - a local and historically signifi cant blue /
black brick, an anodised aluminium mesh that varies
in transparency depending on the viewer’s vantage
point and brightly coloured horizontal banding.

Part of the wider Birmingham Millennium Centre
development, Millennium Point is a 980 space MSCP.
The building is situated on a sloping site and offers
6 levels of parking. The internal vehicular circulation
model incorporates the VCM (Vertical Circulation
Module) system, whilst externally multi-faceted and
punctured panels give a striking and varied aesthetic.
In 2013, the building was named as one of the top ten
“coolest car parks in the world” by bdonline.co.uk.
