122 Collaborative Analysis Programme for the Characterisation of New USGS Microbeam Reference Materials Three new candidate reference materials are now available for distribution to geochemical laboratories willing to contribute analytical data from microbeam techniques. The basalt glasses were made from aliquots (2 kg) of USGS reference materials BIR-1, BCR-2, and BHVO-2, which were melted at 1500° C and then cooled rapidly. The three glasses have element compositions similar to their powdered precursors, except for ferrous iron which is significantly less. Information on the composition of BIR-1, BCR-2, and BHVO-2 is available on the USGS web page (http://minerals.cr.usgs.gov/geo_chem_stand/ ). The analytical protocol calls for participating laboratories to receive three fragments of each basalt glass requested. Each fragment is to be analysed in triplicate (minimum requirement) and all analytical results are to be forwarded to the USGS. The black, irregularly shaped fragments range in size from 1 mm 3 to 1 cm 3 . Please indicate the microbeam procedure to be used, and the size of fragment required. Additional fragments may be requested, but the availability of larger fragments (> 0.5 cm 3 ) is limited.
