Update on time calibration with optical beacons

Collaboration MeetingCERN, 6-10 Feb 2012

Agustín Sánchez LosaIFIC (CSIC – Universitat de València)

Outline

• Reminder of the time calibration with OBs• Time calibrations performed since Moscow

meeting– Intraline calibration: T0s

• #9 (after HV Jun’11)• #10 (after HV Dec’11)• LED-OB 1263 (L09F21): Chronicle of a Death Foretold

– Interline calibration: Time offsets• #8 (after L6 & L9 reconnection and HV Nov’10)• #9 (after HV Jun’11)

• To-Do List6-10 Feb 2012 Agustín Sánchez Losa – CERN Collaboration Meeting 2

6-10 Feb 2012 Agustín Sánchez Losa – CERN Collaboration Meeting 3

Time calibration recipe:– Flash various OMs at the same time by an OB– Plot the distribution of hit arrival times for each ARS– Fit such distribution with a Gauss@Exponential function– Determine Tpeak , the time of the function peak

– Plot Tpeak vs distance– Deviations from the straight line fit will be used as corrections to the T0s

L09F21 LED-OB was a noisy OB:• the trigger in OB PMT was given by clock signal

noise (thanks Paco and Ciro)• flash time was given ~75ns before it should• “time difference signal” shifted close to the end

of the time window• Decided to add -75ns to the OB t0 for practical

To-Do List

• Intraline calibration by OB:– Compute intermediate T0s, starting for the ones from 2011– Recompute old T0s with updated TVCs and study the impact of using ones

or another– Research & Improvement on intraline calibration: Calibrate the first floors

of each line, study the impact of a calibration with independent sections, Study unstable PMTs since HV tuning in Summer'10, etc.

• Interline calibration by OB:– Research & Improvement on interline calibration: Keep studying time

offsets evolution along long periods, use LED-Beacons as a standard cross-check for the time offsets, impact of the noise in the line offset measurements, etc.
