Standard 13. Collaboration
The registered nurse collaborates with healthcare consumers, family, and others in
the conduct of nursing practice.
Defining Collaboration
• Collaborate as a verb: To work, one with another; to cooperate especially in a joint effort toward a mutual goal.
• Collaboration as a noun: The act of collaborating
Collaboration in Nursing Practice
• Intraprofessional – Nurse to nurse or within the profession
• Interprofessional – Nurse to other professional or between the professions
• Transprofessional – Across professions• Multiprofessional– Involving multiple professions• Nurse–patient, family, community, population• Nurse–agency
Collaborative Reasoning
A consensual approach towards:• The interpretation of examination findings
the setting of goals and priorities• Implementation and progression of
treatment(Edwards, Jones, Higgs, Trede, & Jensen, 2004)
Collaborative Decision-making
• Ethical right to participate in decision-making that affects health.
• Ethical responsibility to obtain informed consents.
• Partnership in decision-making between nurses, other professionals, and patients, families, communities and/or populations.
Common Elements of Collaboration
• Desire for all participants to work together towards a common purpose or goal.
• Belief that all participants are valued.• Embrace the unique perspectives of all
participants.• A strong sense of purpose among participants.• Intentional trust and shared responsibility
among participants.
