No. 25 Raiders Welcome Cornell for Homecoming Colgate plays on the Crown Field at Andy Kerr Stadium turf for the first time in 2016, capping its preconference schedule with a marquee matchup against Cornell. The Raiders stand 1-2 after last weekend’s 38-31 defeat to No. 7 Richmond, while Cornell is a perfect 2-0. Both Colgate and Cornell own wins over Yale, with the Big Red also knocking off Bucknell 24-16 back on Sept. 17. Saint Francis, VMI and South Carolina State are the only other FCS teams that haven’t yet played at home. Saint Francis and VMI join Colgate in hosting games this Saturday, while SC State is home for the first time Oct. 8. Colgate and Cornell have been playing football since 1896. The Big Red lead the all-time series 48-46-3, but Colgate is riding a seven-game winning streak. The Raiders have won 17 of the last 19 encounters and are 29-7 against their CNY rivals since 1975. Colgate’s longest winning streak in the series was 10 in a row from 1993-2005. Last year’s 28-21 result was just as close as the overall series would indicate, however, with Colgate thwarting four Cornell pass attempts on first-and-goal to preserve the Raider victory. Pat Afriyie was named Corvias Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week. Afriyie tied for game honors with nine tackles (seven solo), of which three were TFLs. Two of those stops were sacks, giving the junior four for the season and 18 for his career. That’s already fifth on the all-time Raider chart (see Colgate Records Watch on Page 2) and over halfway to the Colgate record of 28½ set by Kelly Robinson from 1979-81. Afriyie leads the Patriot League in sacks and stands fifth nationally. Colgate earned some credit for its tough early schedule and hung on at 25th in this week’s FCS Coaches Poll despite a 1-2 record. Colgate finished 13th in last year’s final FCS Coaches Poll and 17th in the STATS FCS Poll. Speaking of top-notch competition, how about Colgate’s last six games? All on the road, Colgate has gone 3-3 against New Hampshire, No. 5 James Madison, No. 10 Sam Houston State, ACC-member Syracuse, Yale and No. 7 Richmond. • Josh Cerra continues to shine in his first season as the Colgate punter. Talk about consistency, his punts at Richmond covered 48, 48, 49 and 48 yards. That’s a 48.2-yard average. Cerra for the season is at 41.6, with seven punts downed inside the 20-yard line against zero touchbacks. Colgate’s punt unit leads the Patriot League in net punting at 39.4.

• The Raiders are third nationally in fewest penalties per game at 3.3, and fifth in fewest penalty yards at 35.0. Colgate in 2015 led the Patriot League in fewest penalties at 4.8.

• Ben Hunt and Keyon Washington scored their first career touchdowns last week at Richmond -- and Abu Daramy nearly joined them. Hunt waltzed in with an 11-yard blocked punt return that gave Colgate a 14-10 lead over the Spiders. Then Daramy sparked a late Raider rally with an 84-yard kickoff return to the Richmond 6-yard line. Colgate scored two plays later to make it a 38-24 game. Washington found pay dirt on a 4-yard run with 3:34 remaining, but that’s a close as the Raiders could get. Daramy’s 84-yard return was the second-longest in Colgate history that did not result in a touchdown.

• Dan Hunt in his third season as head coach has returned Colgate Football to national prominence. Hunt is 15-14 overall, including a pair of NCAA playoff victories last season, and already stands 9-3 against Patriot League competition. This is Hunt’s 21st season as a member of the Colgate coaching staff, the first 18 of which he served as an assistant under head coach Dick Biddle. The Raiders won seven Patriot League crowns in the Biddle-Hunt Era and advanced all the way to the 2003 NCAA title game.

• Colgate is the preseason pick of the Patriot League coaches and sports information directors to repeat as conference champion. The Raiders were 6-0 in the Patriot League last year and 9-5 overall en route to two playoff victories and a berth in the NCAA FCS quarterfinals. Fordham, Holy Cross, Lehigh, Bucknell, Lafayette and Georgetown round out the 2016 predicted order of finish.

• Senior John Maddaluna III is just five receptions and eight yards from climbing into the Colgate top 10 in both categories (see Records Watch below). Maddaluna had 113 catches for 1,670 yards. Alex Greenawalt also needs just 53 receiving yards to reach 1,000 for his career.

• Jake Melville’s 106 yards rushing last week at Richmond marked the seventh 100-yard game of his career. He’s now 22nd on the all-time Colgate rushing chart with 1,800 yards. (See Records Watch below)

Syracuse 33COLGATE 7Sept. 2 -- Carrier Dome, Syracuse, N.Y.

Colgate 7 0 0 0 -- 7Syracuse 7 13 6 7 -- 33

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – An early Colgate touchdown was no match for the ACC. The Raiders struck for an opening TD drive and led 7-0 before Syracuse unveiled its new-generation of-fense and won the Central New York matchup, 33-7. Jake Melville hit Owen Rockett for a 19-yard TD on the game’s opening drive. But the Orange defense stiff-ened and limited Colgate’s senior quarterback to just 82 passing yards for the game. Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey completed 34 of his 40 attempts for 355 yards. Colgate linebackers Charles Cairnie with 15 and Kyle Diener with nine were the game’s tackle leaders. Cairnie’s total was a career high. Colgate’s defense held Syracuse to four field goals to keep the game in hand through three quarters. Colgate scored on the game’s opening possession. They needed help – Syracuse ran into the punter, Josh Cerra, resulting in an initial first down – but Colgate went 75 yards in 12 plays covering 6 minutes. Melville scrambled left and found Owen Rockett for Rockett’s first career TD, a 19-yarder. Syracuse answered with 20 straight points and led 20-7 at intermission. 2016 SEASON REVIEW

COLGATE 55Yale 13Sept. 17 -- Yale Bowl, New Haven, Conn.

Colgate 21 14 10 10 -- 55Yale 7 6 0 0 -- 13

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Colgate’s Jake Melville took to the airways and passed for a school-record five TDs as the No. 23 Raiders whipped Yale 55-13. Colgate scored its most points against the Bulldogs in a series dating to 1909, and Saturday’s 42-point win was the largest Raider margin of victory since a 46-3 triumph at Fordham in 2006. Melville finished 22-of-32 for 315 yards and five touchdowns against just one interception. The Raider of-fense had a 300-yard passer, a 100-yard rusher (James Holland 110) and a 100-yard receiver (John Maddaluna III 147) in the same game for the first time since 2012. And defense? Colgate held Yale to 12 rushing yards, intercepted four passes and sacked Bulldog quarter-backs five times for a combined minus-36 yards.

Colgate 14 3 0 14 -- 31Richmond 10 7 14 7 -- 38

RICHMOND, Va. – No. 7 Richmond made just enough plays to claim a top-25 worthy decision over No. 22 Colgate, 38-31. Junior Pat Afriyie was Colgate’s defensive star. The Connecticut native tied for game honors with nine tack-les, including seven solo. Three of those stops were be-hind the line of scrimmage and two were sacks, giving him four for the year and 18 for his career. Three different Raiders scored rushing touchdowns, with James Holland, Jake Melville and Keyon Washing-ton finding the end zone. Ben Hunt scored Colgate’s other TD on an 11-yard blocked punt return. Brett Field made the block that flipped the Raiders in front 14-10 late in the first quarter. Then after Richmond reeled off 28 straight points to take a 38-17 lead, Colgate put together one last flurry. The Raiders scored twice to narrow the margin to seven, but they couldn’t regain possession for a possible third scoring drive until less than a minute remained.
