69.4 per game, but returned only three starters.

• Colgate’s win at Cal Poly was its first to open a season since a 37-34 overtime triumph over Albany back in

2011. The last time the Raiders began with a road victory was the 15-1 national championship game season of 2003 that started 20-19 at Georgetown.

• Colgate drew plenty of positive ink from its Week 0 win at Cal Poly. Ben Hunt was named NCAA.com FCS Defensive

Player of the Week after posting a career-high seven tackles, two for lost yardage, a caused fumble and a recovery. T.J. Holl was voted Hero Sports FCS Defensive Hero of the Week on the strength of his career-high 16 tackles, nine solo. The first Patriot League awards of the season recognized Holl as De-fensive Player of the Week (combining Weeks 0 and 1) and Chris Puzzi as Special Teams Player of the Week. Puzzi was perfect on four kicks, making field goals from 27 and 35 yards out and converting both PATs.

• Eight Raiders made their first career starts at Cal Poly. On offense, it was Carmine Scarfone, Owen Rockett and Jovaun Woolford. On defense, it was John Steffen, Chuck Moore, Caleb

Fell, Jacob Esarco and Alec Wisniewski.

• James Holland Jr., returned from injury to lead the Raiders at Cal Poly with 91 rushing yards on 20 attempts. Included was Colgate’s first TD of the season and 20th of his career, a

17-yarder that made it 10-0 in the first quarter. Alex Mathews added a career-long 57-yard TD in the second quarter to make it 17-0 at half. Mathews finished with 78 yards on seven touches.

• Abu Daramy-Swaray batted away the final Cal Poly pass attempt with 37 seconds remaining to close out the 20-14

triumph. The sophomore was in on five tackles to go with two pass breakups, and he also handled all of the kickoff and punt returns. Daramy-Swaray is coming off 2016 Patriot League Rookie of the Year and Hero Sports Freshman All-America honors.

• Head coach Dan Hunt owns a 13-5 Patriot League record for his first three seasons leading the Raiders, including a

perfect 6-0 mark and conference championship in 2015. The Raiders that season won twice in the NCAA playoffs on the road and reached the quarterfinal round for the second time in program history (2003 national runner-up). Hunt’s overall coaching record is 20-17. He spent 19 years as a Raiders assistant coach before succeeding Dick Biddle as head coach after the 2013 campaign.

• Stan Dakosty was promoted during the off-season to Associate Head Coach. Dakosty

is in his 11th season on the Colgate coaching staff and eighth season overseeing the Raider secondary. He also serves as the football re-cruiting coordinator.

• Colgate Athletics over the summer com-pleted multiple projects of immediate

benefit to the football team. A new FieldTurf playing surface was installed on Crown Field at Andy Kerr Stadium and renovations were completed on the football locker room, meet-ing room and academic center inside the Reid Athletic Center.

• Colgate captains for 2017 are Pat Afriyie and Alec Wisniewski on defense, and Ryan

Paulish and Max Hartzman on offense.

COLGATE 20Cal Poly 14Aug. 26 -- Spanos Stad, San Luis Obispo, Cal.

Colgate 10 7 3 0 -- 20Cal Poly 0 0 0 14 -- 14

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Colgate put on a near picture-perfect display for three quarters and then held off a furious Cal Poly rally to post a 20-14 intersectional victory over the No. 23 Mustangs. With the ESPNU cameras rolling and a national TV audience tuned in, Colgate jumped to a 20-0 lead through the first 45 minutes. James Holland Jr., returned from injury to rush for a 17-yard touchdown and Alex Mathews added a 57-yard scamper to highlight the Raider offense. Carmine Scarfone emerged relatively unscathed from his first collegiate start and first collegiate snap. Scarfone led his opening drive of the game 75 yards in 11 plays for a Chris Puzzi 27-yard field goal. He finished 8-of-15 passing for 94 yards and one interception. Puzzi added a 35-yarder in the third quarter for Col-gate’s 20-0 cushion. Cal Poly scored TDs with 14:22 and 7:07 remaining in the game and was driving for the winning points in the closing minutes. The Mustangs had converted three straight fourth-down conversions before they were foiled on the final attempt when Abu Daramy-Swaray batted down a Khaleel Jenkins pass with 37 seconds left. Colgate’s win is its first to open a season since a 37-34 overtime triumph over Albany back in 2011. The last time the Raiders began with a road victory was the 15-1 national championship game season of 2003 that started 20-19 at Georgetown.
