HOPE“I hope my candidate wins this election.” “I hope we’ll have sunny weather on vacation.” “I hope for world peace.”

What do you hope for? Most of us have similar hopes and dreams for our lives and the lives of those whom we care about. Sometimes hope is a sit-back-and-wait-for-something-good-to-happen-in-the-future sort of passive feeling. Other times, hope is an elusive balm we desperately seek to soothe pain and suffering. But if we’re honest, most of the time we “hope“ to be on the receiving end of whatever hope brings.

But what if Christian hope is different? And for that matter, shouldn’t the way Christians live in the world reflect a different kind of hope? Because our hope is grounded in God’s unfailing promises, it motivates us beyond mere wishing to a way of being and doing. We don’t wait for God’s hope; we do God’s hope. Hope is an action verb. The hope found in God effects change for the good, multiplies inwardly and outwardly, and gives thanks.

THIS FALL, LET THIS CATALOG GUIDE YOU AS YOU SEEK OUT SPIRITUAL RESOURCES THAT nOT OnLY MULTIPLY HOPE In EVERYOnE In YOUR CHURCH, BUT TO THOSE BEYOnD ITS WALLS AS WELL.

“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” (Hebrews 6:19-20, nIV)

newFirst CorinthiansLiving Love When We Disagree Melissa Spoelstra

With more and more ways to communicate in a culture that encourages sharing the details of our lives, there exists greater and greater opportunity for disagreement. Our differences seem more pronounced. Our words sound more divisive. Even as Christians, we struggle to get along. The Apostle Paul wrote to the Christians living in Corinth about this very thing, encouraging them to not ridicule one another but to work together to show the love of Christ.

In this six-week DVD study, you’ll explore Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians and discover how to live love even when you disagree. A workbook and Leader Guide complement the book and six-segment DVD.

from the introduction

“”

Paul urged the church in Corinth to “be of one mind, united in thought and purpose” (1 Corinthians 1:10). He essentially called

them to live love—even when they disagreed. Chapter 13, known as the love

chapter, wasn’t included to be a nice poem for weddings. Instead, it was written to urge

Christians living in a pagan and diverse culture to approach one another with the love of Christ. It calls us to do the same.

Josephthe Journey to Forgiveness

SESSIONS

6Melissa Spoelstra

All of us know what it’s like to be hurt or betrayed. Often it’s a small breach: being spoken to rudely, being overlooked in a time of need, being gossiped or lied about. Some of us have endured unspeakable pain through abuse, adultery, or abandonment. God knows the pain we cause each other and longs to help us learn to practice forgiveness.

This six-week study explores what God has to say about grace and forgiveness through Joseph’s story of trial and triumph found in Genesis 37–50. As we study his dreams, his betrayers, his dysfunctional family, his struggle to forgive, and his journey toward reconciliation, we’ll find truths that echo into our own personal situations.

Enough AlreadyWinning Your Ugly Struggle with BeautyBarbara L. Roose

Most women know that God loves them, but might he love them more if they finally lost that last ten pounds, or got their hair to lay right, or finally found a pair of jeans that looked good and let them breathe? Well, maybe God doesn’t care about jeans, but women do, and all the talk about inner beauty hasn’t kept all of us from staring into a mirror and taking an inventory that never quite measures up. Enough Already will elevate the soul-freeing, spiritual truth that God is the Creator of beauty and that women are called to appreciate and care for themselves as his own. Women will learn to accept God-given beauty so that when they look in the mirror they see God’s handiwork, not their flaws.

Ladies, our ugly struggle with beauty is a war on two fronts: against

our culture and against ourselves. Although we cannot control the

media or the messages it creates, we are 100 percent in control of our beliefs, responses, and choices when

it comes to the topic of beauty.

author insightsnEwBeautiful AlreadyReclaiming God’s Perspective on BeautyBarbara L. Roose

You look at a mirror and what do you see? Wide hips. Too many wrinkles. A crooked nose. But is that what God sees in your reflection? What is God’s perspective on beauty? Beautiful Already is a six-week Bible study designed to help liberate women from the ugly struggle with beauty. By letting go of beliefs that affect your self-image and self-esteem, you’ll be free to move toward God’s viewpoint of your heart, mind, body, and soul…free from the trap of comparison and self-ridicule. Plus you’ll learn how to encourage and help other women with their unrealistic expectations.

Being set apart is not something that means we see ourselves as better

than others. On the contrary, it is only God’s Spirit living in us that marks us

and makes us different from those around us, and it is our brokenness

and sinfulness that drive us to seek a new way, a new life in Christ.

Jessica LaGroneThis six-week study traces the story of the Genesis family from Adam and Eve through the generations to Joseph. Despite both good and bad traits that were passed down, God worked for good in every generation, transforming those within and outside the family bloodlines. The study ends with the story of Joseph, who decided to stop the cycle of previous generations, offering forgiveness and grace to his brothers and bringing blessing from

brokenness. A Participant Book, Leader Guide, Preview Book, and DVD are offered individually or as part of the complete Leader Kit. Abingdon Press.

Set Apart holy habits of Prophets and Kings SESSIONS

6Jessica LaGrone

You’re not unlike some of the kings and prophets in 1 and 2 Kings. Although they were set apart by God, they didn’t have all the answers. They struggled. They made big time mistakes. But they grew in their faith through spiritual practices even while carrying out God’s calling on earth.

This six-week study examines the holy habits of six kings and prophets who were set apart by their close walk with God. Each week you’ll study the story of one intriguing character, discuss God’s unique purpose for his life, and learn about his particular spiritual discipline. Then you’ll explore how that timeless spiritual practice can draw you closer to God, helping you fulfill God’s purpose for your life. A Participant Book, Leader Guide, and DVD are offered individually or as part of the complete Leader Kit.

You’d think that if you got a mention in the Bible your name would be included too, right? As a woman, you know that who we are is often overlooked. Even in the Bible. But, although their names were not always recorded, biblical women were known and loved by God—just like we are.

You’ll explore the stories of four of these anonymous women in this six-week, DVD-based study which is perfect for you and your girlfriends’ Bible study or any women’s small group. Each woman will grow in her relationship with Christ and find her significance in the heart of God. Shame has no place in the purpose, plan, and destiny God has for you. Because shame lies to us. It robs us of the very freedom we long for, and shackles us in the prison of our past. I know. I’ve been there. I was schooled

He is not only more powerful than anything you’ve done but also stronger than anything ever done to you. You can deal with your yesterday today, so that you can move on to what God has in store for you tomorrow—a powerful purpose and destiny he wants you to fulfill.

In Unashamed, you will discover that God has already won the victory over sin and its shame. You will discover how to break free from believing the lies of the deceiver and to define yourself not by shame’s lies, but by God’s truth. You need not live bound by shame because you have been set free.

New Present Over PerfectLeaving Behind Frantic for a Simpler, More Soulful Way of LivingShauna Niequist

In a culture that values speed, efficiency, image, and busyness, some of us are aching for another way to live: more intentional, more connected. Simpler, slower, richer. Many of us have believed the myth that achievement and success bring us contentment, only to find it’s actually things like connection and meaning, not success and achievement, that provide true peace and genuine happiness.

Niequist shares with vulnerability and transparency about the reality of living wholly present in one’s relationship with their family and the others they love, inspiring readers to discover their own path to a more fulfilling way to do life.

about the author

From the pinnacle of the Christian music scene to a breathtaking career as a writer and speaker, Sheila Walsh

has touched the lives of countless women looking for shelter, comfort, and safety in the arms of the Lord.

The Longing in Me is the story of how Sheila realized what it was she had

always longed for—and an invitation for you to discover the same.

New Uninvitedliving loved When You Feelless than, left out, and lonelyLysa TerKeurst

The enemy wants us to feel rejected...left out, lonely, and less than. When we allow him to speak lies through our rejection, he pickpockets our purpose. Cripples our courage. Dismantles our dreams. And blinds us to the beauty of Christ’s powerful love.

In Uninvited, Lysa shares her own deeply personal experiences with rejection—from the incredibly painful childhood abandonment by her father to the perceived judgment of the perfectly toned woman one elliptical over.

leads to the Heart of God Sheila Walsh

Each of us has a sacred ache within us —a longing for the very heart of God. Walsh draws on the biblical example of David, the greatest king Israel ever had, who was known as a man after God’s own heart. Yet at times even David had frustrations, doubts, and worries about his situation. David’s life paints a portrait of the longings we all share, and how we can channel those longings in a way that brings us closer to God.

The Longing in Me will help you find the one true source who can meet your deepest longings and give you real tools to help you heal from the past and find joy today.

GreenFaithMobilizing God’s People to Save the EarthFletcher HarperGod is calling us to live differently. The challenges we face are imminent. There is no doubt that climate change is happening—but what can ordinary people do in the face of such staggering problems? GreenFaith gives concrete examples and tips that will help people of faith to better care for the Earth. Author Fletcher Harper shows that it takes belief and practice, science and faith to sustain us and our planet. He shows us the challenges but also provides the inspiration we need to believe that we can make a difference—that we can make Earth a better world. Each chapter has questions to guide personal study and group conversation. Abingdon Press.

This unique 7-session study draws together the Christian faith of Bishop Sally Dyck and the scientific world of her niece, Sarah Ehrman. Readers will find in the dialogue between their sometimes differing worldviews that both are crucial to making lasting changes. A Hopeful Earth will bridge the gap between Jesus and the environment and guide readers in understanding that living as good stewards of God’s creation is a significant component of what it means to follow Jesus. nEwThe ShoutFinding the Prophetic Voice in Unexpected PlacesHannah Adair Bonner

“Shout loudly; don’t hold back; raise your voice like a trumpet!” The words of Isaiah 58 lay the groundwork for The Shout, a six-session small group study that uses art, poetry, and video performances to create a unique learning environment. The curriculum offers a framework for discussion in which participants explore their own answers after first hearing the perspectives of artists and creative thinkers. Participants are encouraged to venture into their community to listen for unheard prophetic voices and to help these voices be heard.

Although the study Journal and Leader Guide are suitable for any of adult age, the searching hearts of many within the millennial generation are especially drawn to the message in The Shout.

Toward Life-Changing CommunityNick Cunningham with Trevor Miller

Life is better shared…especially in a Christ-centered community. Although One is a small-group study written to cover an eight-week session, its larger purpose is for participants of the group to embrace meaningful relationships with their fellow Christ followers and to continue to meet together, lifting each other up, pushing each other forward, and sending each other out—indefinitely.

One Journal is an interactive tool that helps small group members take the first step by answering questions that call for individual responses and with prompts for creative interaction. Group activities based on the weekly lesson are designed to further build the community. In addition to the Journal, a Leader Guide and video (DVD or mp4) are also available.

Bishop Willimon’s new book should come with a warning: Do not read

unless you are ready to be changed and to want to change the world! The postliberal prophet shows how we are sinful “others” before God and thus

have no excuse for failing to be more empathetic of and treat Others around us in the world with grace. Regardless of what politicians and cultural fear tell us or how loudly they quote Scripture

while doing so, Willimon shows that the gospel calls us to claim an identity as one who loves not just our neighbors,

but also our enemies. —O. Wesley Allen, Jr.,

NeW Fear of the OtherNo Fear in LoveWilliam H. Willimon

In this simple, no-nonsense book, reliable spiritual guide Will Willimon brings a non-technical, Wesleyan perspective to bear on what may be the hardest thing for people of faith to do: to consider the Gospel mandate to receive and love (and not merely tolerate) those considered to be “Other” or outside mainstream Christian culture, and to accept them in their particularity and difference as gifts and mysteries bearing the grace of God.

Rooted in the New Testament understanding of Gentile outsiders grafted into the covenant community, Willimon invites readers to an on-the-ground faith that hearkens to a soliciting and revealing God—the God who comes to us again and again through so-called outsiders, strangers, immigrants, and those without status. Beyond welcome, Christians must become “other” to the world, shaking off the dominant culture’s identity and privilege through practices of listening, humility, and understanding.

new Living the FiveJim and Jennifer Cowart; Rick Warren, foreword

This is the resource for any church looking to expand through community groups—an alternative type of small group that reaches smaller settings. With less overhead and more mobility, community groups harness a combination of evangelism and ethics reminiscent of John Wesley’s class meetings. In Living the Five, Jim and Jennifer Cowart show you how successful community groups are called to live out five principles and share how they applied these principles when creating community groups in their own church:1. You can’t do life alone.2. Growing people change.3. Saved people serve people.4. Found people find people.5. Worship is a lifestyle.

During the Living the Five campaign, which is led during worship from the platform or pulpit, make Participant Books and DVDs available for anyone who agrees to establish a community group in their home, workplace, or other settings. New Half TruthsGod Helps those Who Help themselves and other things the Bible doesn’t sayAdam Hamilton

True or false: 1. Everything happens for a reason. 2. God helps those who help themselves. 3. God won’t give you more than you can handle. 4. God said it, I believe it, that settles it. 5. Love the sinner, hate the sin. All true? Not so fast.

We’ve heard these phrases all of our lives, but in Adam Hamilton’s new book, Half Truths, you’ll learn that although they capture some element of truth, when compared to the wisdom found in Scripture, they’re really just common Christian clichés. This five-week, DVD-based study can be used in small groups or as a churchwide program where all ages explore the topics at the same time.

In Revival, he once again uses his captivating storytelling talent to take you on a six-week journey through England tracing the life of John Wesley. Wesley’s message and his faith continue to speak to 21st-century Christians, calling for a revival of our hearts and souls so that our world might be changed. His story is our story. It’s our heritage, it defines our faith, and it challenges us to rediscover our spiritual passion.

A Disciple’s HeartGrowing in Love and Grace James A. Harnish with Justin LaRosa

We hear a lot about “spiritual journey” these days. But it’s more than just trendy wording. Although he didn’t use the phrase, that’s what John Wesley was really all about—taking steps and continually walking a path that transforms the heart and helps us grow into the likeness of Christ.

This study, designed for use in either small groups or as a churchwide experience, attempts to reclaim and, in a sense, reinterpret Wesley’s idea of “Christian perfection.” Participants learn how to develop a pattern of daily Scripture reading, prayer, and personal reflection, while guided questions help define spiritual life goals and create strong church community bonds. The six-week class is supported with the Daily Workbook (Participant Book), Companion Reader (Devotional), a Leader Guide with Downloadable Toolkit, and a flash drive with the contents of the Downloadable Toolkit (all included in the Program Kit).

Magrey deVega

A covenant is an agreement, a pledge, a contract. A covenant with God is a faithful promise of renewal, and none are more central to the Methodist identity than The Wesley Covenant Prayer, which John Wesley first shared in a renewal service in 1755. Its central theme, “the means of increasing serious religion,” focuses on the way we can have a closer relationship with God and others through a heightened dedication to a serious faith. Abingdon Press has reintroduced Wesley’s covenant prayer and renewal service as an accessible churchwide campaign, One Faithful Promise, so that modern congregations, like thousands of congregations in the past, can experience a boost in their way of Christian living.

new Five Marks of a MethodistMagrey deVega with Steve Harper

This concise and compelling study helps readers learn and remember the five identifiers that John Wesley set forth in The Character of a Methodist, appealing especially to those of Wesleyan heritage, but beneficial to any Christian person or group. It answers in plain language, “How should United Methodists live?” and provides the people called Methodists with a clear and memorable unifying focus.

As followers of Jesus who reach out to serve their neighbors, United Methodists:• Love God• Rejoice in God• Give thanks• Pray always• Love others

The study consists of Steve Harper’s original book, Five Marks of a Methodist; a Participant Character Guide; a Leader Guide; DVD; and streaming video sessions (6 brief videos). Perfect for explaining what it means to live in the United Methodist way.

new Top 10 United Methodist BeliefsDon Adams

There can be no doubt about what Jesus thought was “the main thing”—the Great Commandments to love God with our heart, soul, and mind and to love neighbor as yourself.

What were the non-negotiables for the founder of the Methodist movement, John Wesley? Wesley’s first priority was to grow Christian disciples who loved God and neighbor with a holy love that keeps those Commandments.

Using John Wesley as guide, Top 10 United Methodist Beliefs describes the 10 most important United Methodist beliefs, so that we are equipped for every good work. It also describes how a passionate Wesley can still inspire us to travel the road to perfection using these basic beliefs as signposts, not hitching posts, so that we can more fully follow Jesus.

But discipleship can be arduous and God’s grace is not cheap. We must be prepared to walk and walk and not just talk. The Christian life is action-packed with surprises at every turn. “Are you able?” as the old hymn asks. Yes, Lord, we are able through the power and love of God to be accountable to Jesus and each other. Each chapter includes study questions suitable for personal reflection and group conversation.

John Wesley boils fiscal responsibilities down to just three rules: Earn all you can. Save all you can. Give all you can. Sounds simple, right? Yes, but not easy, especially in today’s culture of consumerism. This twenty-first century translation of Wesley’s money management philosophy will give everyone in your congregation—children and teenagers as well as adults of any age—a new way to think about money, not only during your stewardship program, but for the rest of their lives.

Churchwide study guides, a Leader Guide, a DVD, Devotional Readings for Home, and a Program Guide flash drive are available for this four-week program.

It’s about a stewardship revolution. For a congregation to grow in generosity, pastors, financial chairs, and stewardship chairs must live and give witness to the importance of stewardship in their personal lives and then intentionally recruit and train others to join the revolution. In Generosity Rising, you’ll get practical guidelines for training a dedicated team of “generosity revolutionaries” who embrace, live, and lead others on a journey of gratitude, prayer, and faith. This book is for any pastor, church planter or lay leader struggling to do ministry with a lack of financial resources but hungry to reach the lost with the Good News of Jesus Christ.Rosario Picardo has been in this very position, starting a church in a movie theater with no people and very little financial support, and revitalizing a dying congregation in a deteriorating physical structure. Through trials and failures, new creative ways of doing ministry and entrepreneurial thinking, God provided, and Picardo learned new ways for reaching the least and lost and for growing disciples. In Funding Ministry with Five Loaves and Two Fishes, Picardo shares the lessons he’s learned with confidence that the Church is not dead; it’s just time for a new wineskin.

newThe e-Giving Guide for every ChurchUsing Digital Tools to Grow MinistryRichard Rogers

The purpose of this book is to help churches raise more money for ministry and mission by better using electronic media.

Although philanthropy in the US is growing, churches continue to receive a declining portion of that philanthropy. Part of the challenge is that America is becoming significantly less dependent on paper currency (cash and checks), yet the church continues to count on paper currency as their primary media for donations. There have been warning signals for several years. Many churches face shrinking budgets and membership and are beginning to ask the right questions. The author’s goal is to capture this teachable moment with a resource that will encourage pastors and church leaders to utilize tools already available to change the trajectory of their resourcing; because nothing is more important than what God has called them to do.

Best-selling author Mike Slaughter offers a comprehensive look at how Christians use their money in The Christian Wallet. Slaughter explores today’s culture of consumerism and the impact of what we buy, asking difficult questions about morality and money while acknowledging that there are no easy answers.

Throughout the book, profiles of real people inspire thoughtful reflection about the true value of money and the rewards of conscious spending. Questions for individual or group study are also included with each chapter. The Christian Wallet helps Christians grapple with important questions about using money: how we spend, how we live, how we save, how we give, and what it all means.”

Joel Salatin is perhaps the nation’s best known farmer, whose environmentally friendly, sustainable Polyface Farms has been featured in Food, Inc. and Time magazine. Now in his first book written for a faith audience, Salatin offers a deeply personal argument for earth stewardship, and calls for fellow Christians to join him in looking to the Bible for a foodscape in line with spiritual truth. Salatin urges Christians to rethink America’s allegiance to cheap corporate food that destroys creation in its production, impoverishes third-world countries, and supports oligarchical interests. He wonders why Christians ignore and even revel in unhealthy eating habits and factory farming that runs counter to God’s design. With Scripture and biblical stories, Salatin presents an alternative.

new Get Their nameGrow Your Church by Building New Relationships Bob Farr and Kay Kotan

As a church leader, you are (probably) targeting the wrong people with your ‘evangelism’ efforts. You are operating a model that no longer works, because it is too passive, too polite, and focused in the wrong direction. You are not making new disciples, not adding significantly to Christ’s transformation of the world. And you—or at least your congregation— are (probably) unaware of this fact.

There is hope, and you will find it in these pages. Farr, Kotan, and Anderson reveal the ways most churches unwittingly misdirect their reach into the community. The authors show in practical terms how to change the habits of leaders and entire congregations, so that invitation is natural, constant, systemic, genuine, and easy. Get Their Name clearly demonstrates how your church can change, and equips your people to share their faith in a way that is effective, biblical, and transformational.

AskFaith Questions in a Skeptical AgeScott J. Jones and Arthur D. Jones

We live in a skeptical age. People—especially young people—express doubts about Christian faith. In this thoughtful eight-week study, Bishop Scott Jones, author of The Wesleyan Way, partners with his son Rev. Arthur Jones to address hard questions that all of us face when considering faith, religion, and the church.

The message is strong and clear: Don’t let your questions stop you from accepting God’s invitation to faith. Engage your doubt, and you may find you are closer to God on the other side.

NEW The Disciple-Maker’s Handbook7 Elements of a Discipleship LifestyleBobby Harrington and Josh Patrick

Many people believe that discipleship is important, but they need help. In fact, the vast majority of Christians report that they have never been personally discipled by a more mature follower of Jesus. Is it any wonder that they have a difficult time knowing how to disciple others?

If making disciples of Jesus is the greatest cause on earth, how should we equip people to do it? This handbook is a practical guide for how to embrace the discipleship lifestyle of being a disciple of Jesus and how to make other disciples of Jesus. Whether you are a parent who wants to disciple your children, a small group leader who wants to disciple those in your group, or a church leader who wants to disciple future leaders, the seven key elements in this handbook form a framework for understanding discipleship that can be applied in countless situations. In addition, there are questions provided in each section to help you think through how to apply the material to your disciple making efforts.

NEW PilgrimA Course for the Christian JourneySharon Ely Pearson, Stephen Cottrell, Steven Croft, Paula Gooder, Robert Atwell

Pilgrim is a teaching and discipleship resource that helps inquirers and new Christians explore what it means to travel through life with Christ. A Christian course for the twenty-first century, Pilgrim offers an approach of participation, not persuasion.

Following the practice of the ancient disciplines of biblical reflection and prayer with quotes from the Christian tradition throughout the ages, Pilgrim assumes little or no knowledge of the Christian faith. Individuals or small groups on the journey of discipleship in the Episcopal tradition can use Pilgrim at any point.

There are two stages of material: the “Follow” stage, for those who are very new to the faith; and the “Grow” stage, for those who want to go further and learn more. Each stage includes four 6-session courses. There is a Participant Book for each course; Leader Guide covers all 8 courses. Church Publishing.

What the Prayers of Jesus Tell Us About the Heart of God SESSIONS

5Shane StanfordMore than any other part of his ministry, Jesus’ prayers inform and engage his intentions for how the gospel would change lives and affect the world. Looking at specific examples of when Jesus “goes away to pray,” this study refines our understanding of Jesus’ plans for his disciples (both in that first century and for every century to follow). By witnessing even the most intimate moments between the Father and the Son, we can learn something about the big plan God has for our lives. Abingdon Press.

Before AmenThe Power of a Simple Prayer Max LucadoWe all pray . . . some. But wouldn’t we like to pray more? Better? With more fire, faith, and fervency? We aren’t the first to struggle with prayer. The first followers of Jesus needed prayer guidance too. In Before Amen, best-selling author Max Lucado joins readers on a journey to the very heart of biblical prayer, offering hope for doubts and confidence even for prayer wimps. Distilling prayers in the Bible down to one pocket-sized prayer, Max reminds readers that prayer is not a privilege for the pious nor the art of a chosen

few. Prayer is simply a heartfelt conversation between God and his child. Let the conversation begin. Thomas Nelson.

Loneliness touches everyone, whether they are young or old, rich or poor. It can be one of the most painful experiences of life.

There is a friend-shaped hole in all of our lives, Trevor Hudson writes. People long for relationship with others, but what may surprise them is that God actually longs to be friends with them.

Having a close friendship with God is the only thing that will ultimately bring joy and happiness and ease the ache of loneliness, Hudson says. In Beyond Loneliness, he provides guidance for building a friendship with God.

Ten chapters help readers discover how to get to know God and deepen their friendship with God. Each chapter includes friendship exercises and reflection questions. Perfect for small-group or individual study.

Rev. Leslie Weatherhead crafted five sermons on understanding the will of God to help his congregation endure religious doubt as their city—and church—crumbled around them. Weatherhead’s sermons were eventually published as The Will of God, a resource that has sold more than a million copies and has been a lifeline for grieving persons seeking to understand God’s purpose for their pain. This gift edition of the classic book includes a new foreword from best-selling author Adam Hamilton, background information and photos of the historical setting that inspired this book, plus a new cover and layout to refresh a timeless message.

I Choose You Today31 Choices to Make Love LastDeb DeArmondI Choose You Today features 31 scriptural principles that support marriage and help couples develop healthy, biblically based behavior. Built on an introductory anecdotal story, each chapter has an inspirational takeaway of not only what to do, but how to begin applying the principles immediately. Thought-provoking questions create talking points for couples to explore their own choices and experiences in each area and serve to generate open dialogue of discovery. This isn’t a book of “shoulds,” but one of clearly identified choices that each individual can make

to grow their marriage and align it with the word of God. Every saying ends with a conventional wisdom quote. Abingdon Press.

never Fight Again... Guaranteed!Groundbreaking Practices for a Win-Win MarriageDavid HawkinsWhat do couples fight about most? Is it sex, money, children, in-laws, or time management? The answer is: none of the above. Couples can get into power struggles over anything. It is not any specific subject, but the act of fighting, that drives us. We want what we don’t have and will fight to get it. And this drives a wedge between us and the ones we love. In this book, Dr. David B. Hawkins argues for a paradigm shift that will take your relationship from one built on selfishness to one of sacrificial love. Once we do

that, we give up the fight, care for ourselves and those around us, and change our hearts for the better. Abingdon Press.

CreationThe Apple of God’s Eye Justo L. GonzálezAs people of faith, we believe our gracious God created all there is, but does that also mean God created evil? The Bible tells us that God created the heavens and earth, but does that deny the science of the Big Bang? The Storm Before the CalmMaking Sense of Life’s Troubles Talbot Davis

In this five-week study, Davis addresses life’s turbulent, trying moments by looking at some of Scripture’s most significant “storm stories.” By turning the popular phrase, “the calm before the storm” on its head, The Storm Before the Calm presents a unique take on the significance of life’s storms—grief, job loss, relationship failures, and so on—and how faith in Christ helps us weather them. Davis’s message is clear and challenging: life’s storms prepare us for the calm that follows.

Each book below by Talbot Davis contains discussion questions at the end of each chapter to help leaders of small groups. Also, with the purchase of each book, you gain access to a free video trailer and an audio recording of Davis’ sermons as another way to experience the weekly message. Abingdon Press.

newSolveFinding God’s Solutions in a World of Problems Talbot Davis

Nehemiah was not exactly handed a piece of cake. He had to rebuild the wall of Jerusalem after his people returned from exile…that’s all. Talk about a problem solver! Nehemiah chose not to dwell on his complicated task and the many dilemmas that came with it. Instead, he sought God’s solutions, following God’s lead and trusting God’s purpose. In this five-week study, author Talbot Davis shows us how our problems, as individuals and as a society, are not unlike Nehemiah’s. You will see how you can follow in his footsteps, building up your life and the world around you. Each chapter includes questions for reflection and discussion, a practical focus for the week, a closing prayer, and daily Scripture passages to guide personal reading throughout the week.

Man Versus MachineComputers are extremely efficient multitaskers. They can complete mul-

tiple instructions simultaneously without impairing speed or quality. But human brains cannot. Despite our perception that we are being more produc-tive by working on several different projects at once, recent studies have con-firmed we are actually harming our productivity, along with our relationships and creativity.

The term multitasking, defined as the performance of multiple tasks at one time, originated in the 1960’s to describe computer operations, but it is today frequently worn as a badge of honor by people claiming they are high-capacity, high-performance workers. However, this activity is more accurately described as task-switching since our brains are built to focus only on one task at a time. Rather than multitasking, we are really just moving from one task to another quickly.

In today’s technology-rich world, multitaskers are easily spotted. They are the ones texting on the phone while checking e-mails on the laptop, watching television, and listening to their children talk about their day. But multitasking predates BlackBerries and iPads. Ever seen someone putting on makeup while driving? Or remember Aunt Bertha, who couldn’t have a conversation or watch television without knitting? Our tendency to multitask reaches back thousands of years. Our ancestors needed to scan their environ-ment constantly for predators and dangers to stay safe while gathering food. For us, it’s just a bad habit.

Research is showing that multitaskers, whether adults or students, are hurt-ing their ability to think. Dr. Clifford Nass, a psychology professor at Stanford University, says people who multitask all the time are chronically distracted and can’t filter out irrelevant information. He’s found they activate much larger parts of the brain than what is necessary and have lost the ability to focus.

Researchers at the University of Utah found that people who rate them-selves as above-average multitaskers also test high for traits such as risk-taking and impulsivity. This means they are more likely to engage in activities such as driving while using a phone. Yet, these same subjects were the ones who performed the worst on a test that gauged their multitasking abilities. One of

When God Becomes SmallPhil NeedhamDeep inside each one of us is a big empty space. We work and strive with great energy toward ideals and objectives that we know will never fill that space. This human chafing point is universal and although we become quite accomplished at hiding it, it never leaves us. It is always there, under the surface—this struggle to figure out who we are supposed to be as humans, with each other and with God. It is this most basic human struggle that author Phil Needham addresses in this beautiful, profound book. Abingdon Press.

In John 9, Jesus heals a man blind from birth. This is shocking. Even more: this miraculous healing is a microcosm of the whole Christian gospel. In merely seven verses of text, the contemplative Bible reader can see the fruit of the Holy Spirit’s work, putting the infinite Word of God into a mere handful of human words.

In Christ the Lightgiver, Clifton Stringer explores the story of the gospel from the Creation to the Fall, then from the Incarnation to the mystery of Jesus’ (and our) Passover to eternal life.

Teaching Biblical FaithLeading Small Group Bible StudiesJack L. SeymourBiblical faith is a lens for viewing life, and Jack Seymour refreshingly illustrates how the reading of Scripture is a resource for ongoing theological reflection connecting experience, vocation, daily life, and faith. Teaching has concrete consequences affecting the very ways people of faith view the world and make decisions for living. It matters; it makes a difference in how people think and act. Written in an accessible style, the book provides a manageable way to inspire conversation about the many ways the Bible can be taught, the

purposes and outcomes of each approach, and how biblical wisdom shapes personal and corporate decision-making. Useful strategies for leading group Bible study help congregations respond faithfully to the biblical witness and cultivate a whole congregation approach to Bible study. Abingdon Press.

Small Groups for the Rest of UsHow to Design Your Small-Groups System to Reach the FringesChris SurrattMost churches in America struggle to have a significant percentage of their adults participating in small groups. If a church is going to be intentional about discipleship they have to develop on-ramps to small groups that reach people on the fringes and beyond. Many pastors, church staff, and small-group leaders are trying to figure out how to make small groups work in their church and they don’t know how. Small Groups For The Rest Of Us gives them practical, proven strategies on moving people from the fringes into biblically based communities. Thomas Nelson.

newHow to Read the BibleHarvey CoxRenowned religion expert and Harvard Divinity School professor Harvey Cox deepens our experience of the Bible, revealing the three primary ways we read it, why each is important, and how we can integrate these approaches for a richer understanding and appreciation of key texts throughout the Old and New Testaments. Cox explores three different lenses commonly used to bring the Bible into focus: Literary—as narrative stories of family conflict, stirring heroism, and moral dilemmas; History—as classic texts with academic and theological applications; and

Activism—as a source of dialogue and engagement to be shared and applied to our lives. By bringing these together, Cox shows the Bible in all its rich diversity and meaning. HarperOne.

newThe Road to CharacterDavid BrooksBeginning with an examination of how our hunger for wealth and status is eroding our ability to create meaningful inner lives, Brooks looks at men and women throughout history whose genuine sense of humility was fundamental to their success. From St. Augustine, Dorothy Day, Eisenhower, and Samuel Johnson, Brooks explores how their inner struggles transformed each of these men and women into high points of moral clarity and intelligence. With his trademark

intelligence, humor, and storytelling ability, David Brooks traces the history of a great moral tradition, how it has been carelessly thrown away, and how moving away from our “resumé virtues” (power, material wealth, and professional achievements) and toward our “eulogy virtues” (our ability to love and connect to others) can enrich us all. Coates shares the story of his awakening to the truth about his place in the world through a series of revelatory experiences, from Howard University to Civil War battlefields, from the South Side of Chicago to Paris, from his childhood home to the living rooms of mothers whose children’s lives were taken as American plunder. Beautifully woven from personal narrative,

reimagined history, and fresh, emotionally charged reportage, Between the World and Me clearly illuminates the past, bracingly confronts our present, and offers a transcendent vision for a way forward. Spiegel & Grau.

Rising StrongThe Reckoning. The Rumble. The Revolution.Brené BrownIt is the rise from falling that social scientist Brené Brown takes as her subject in Rising Strong. As a grounded theory researcher, she has listened as a range of people from leaders in Fortune 500 companies and the military to artists, couples in long-term relationships, teachers, and parents shared their stories of being brave, falling, and getting back up. She asked herself, “What do these people with strong and loving relationships, leaders nurturing creativity, artists pushing innovation, and clergy walking with people through faith and mystery have in

common?” The answer was clear: They recognize the power of emotion and they’re not afraid to lean in to discomfort. Spiegel & Grau. 9780812995824 Hardcover $27.00; $19.44Also available from this author:9781592408412 Daring Greatly $17.00; $12.24

newwhen Anything GoesBeing Christian in a Post-Christian WorldLeslie WilliamsAmerica seems to have turned into a post-Christian world. Every age has produced those who defend and define the Christian faith against current ideas and trends that threaten it, and ours is no different. But in a lively, personal, and humorous style, author Leslie Williams shares experiences and debunks criticisms in search of a clear explanation of

why we believe what we believe. Along the way she invites you to disagree with ideas, to counter the rhetoric, to refute the conclusions—but to wrestle with the questions, enter your own journey, and discover for yourself why being Christian still makes sense. Abingdon Press.

newDwelling PlacesWords to Live in Every SeasonLucinda Secrest McDowellResolving to seek a deeper, closer relationship with God in the New Year seems overwhelming. You know it’s important, but you also know resolutions are hard to keep. You’re not even sure how you would begin. How about with one word a day? Dwelling Places helps you focus on just one word through short and inspiring readings that

will make your faith flourish and grow. The devotions are organized into four seasons and offer soul care through stories and illustrations for every day, and end with a benediction written as if God were speaking directly to you. One word is all it takes to uncover a biblical blessing or lesson you can act on every day. Abingdon Press. Coming in June.

If you answered “Jesus,” you’re wrong. Jesus lived and died as a Jew. And the secret to knowing him better and to grasping his message is to understand what it meant to him to be Jewish. There is no other resource for Christians like this one when it comes to learning about Jesus’ Jewish roots and how that knowledge can illuminate your life today. A downloadable study guide for

newAre You Fired Up or Burned Out?James W. MooreWho hasn’t, at times, felt the boredom and tiredness that can settle on the human spirit? We struggle through our hectic, frenzied, stressful lives, scraping and scrambling toward something that leaves us empty and feeling cheated, let down, and bone weary. God doesn’t want it to be that way for us. In fact, Jesus came that we might have an exciting, joyful, “abundant life”! In this study you’ll learn what it means to do your best and then to trust God to be and do what you cannot. And, you’ll find out how, with God’s help, you can stay

excited, exhilarated, fulfilled, and fired up about life. A downloadable study guide for Sunday school or small group use is available. Abingdon Press.

newThe Story ContinuesThe Acts of the Apostles for TodayJ. Ellsworth KalasImagine if only one percent of the world were Christians. Statistically, the very first body of believers after Jesus’ death and resurrection made up just one percent of the world’s population. Some of today’s “mega churches” boast congregations larger than that. How did such a small group of ordinary people accomplish the extraordinary? In The Story Continues, author J. Ellsworth Kalas explores the book of Acts to uncover the ministry motivations of the first followers and shows us how they can serve as guides as we carry on

their work. Because the story continues. A discussion guide is also included in this study for use with small groups. Abingdon Press.

newJesus and the BeanstalkOvercoming Your Giants and Living a Fruitful LifeLori Stanley RoeleveldWe live in unsettling, challenging times. Everywhere we look, we see giant problems: giant obstacles to sharing faith, giant barriers to peaceful lives, giant strongholds of fear. But what if you knew eight small secrets to unlocking a strength big enough to overcome whatever obstacle life may bring? Using allegory and a bit of humor, Jesus and the Beanstalk explores a passage in 2 Peter 1 to uncover eight truths that will help you unleash a larger-than-life faith. A creative, refreshing

perspective on spiritual growth. It only took David three stones to fell his giant. You don’t have to live in a fairy tale to tackle yours. Abingdon Press. Coming in September.

A new Spiritual Gift component helps participants explore their spiritual gifts and determine meaningful places of service. Suggestions for Old and New Testament Celebrations are included to increase the fellowship and fun of Disciple. Flexible for use with small groups of 8–14, or for large groups of 15–100.

Echo the Story 12

Echo the Story 12 is an imaginative 12-session overview of the Bible for youth using storytelling, creative reflection, and dialogue. From the Creation to the formation of the church, students enter into each story imaginatively—making observations, drawing, writing, and participating in group dialogue. Each of the one-hour sessions follows a six-part sequence for participants to encounter the Bible in a variety of ways: rewind, prepare, imagine, capture, remix, and connect. Colaborate

Every lesson unpacks one part of the Bible—a book, a genre, a story—giving students the tools they need to read the Bible as the full story of God and God’s people. Students will engage in compelling conversation about God and what it means to follow Jesus as they dig into the Bible. The problem-based learning model allows students to discover for themselves the history and richness of the Old and New Testaments. Students are invited to bring their questions and curiosity to every class. Colaborate was created by theologians, practitioners, and artists who know biblical history, biblical exegesis, and young people. The study combines theological depth with thought–provoking questions, surprising insights, and punchy graphics that will spark conversation and capture the imagination of your students. Includes a flexible Leader Guide. Every lesson includes a two-to-three minute video that highlights the question for the lesson.

When they participate in short-term missions, service, and justice causes, research shows that our efforts don’t always translate into long-term change. They capture some element of truth, yet they miss the point in important ways. Join Adam Hamilton in this 5-week Bible study. John Youth Study BookThe Gospel of Light and Life Adam Hamilton

The Gospel of John is the most deeply spiritual of the four gospels. This writing is filled with rich images and profound truths, but John notes that his aim in writing the gospel is that readers will not only believe in Jesus Christ, but that they “may have life in his name.” Everything needed to conduct a six-session study of the Gospel of John including current examples that have meaning to young people grades 6–12. Can be used with the adult-level DVD.

Beyond the ScreenYouth Ministry for the Connected But Alone Generation Andrew ZirschkyIt’s no secret that teenagers are perpetually connected via social media and mobile devices, but while we’ve analyzed as a culture how youth are connecting we’ve done less well at understanding why teenagers are drawn to the glow of the screen. Beyond the Screen explores the reality that teenagers use these technologies in a desperate bid for an intimacy and depth of relationship largely absent from face-to-face society and the church. Employing the latest ethnographic research on youth and

digital media in tandem with theological reflection and interviews with teens themselves, author Andrew Zirschky provides a deeper glimpse into the world of teens and social media and gives new direction and directives for ministering to Millennials. Abingdon Press.

Hollow FaithHow Andy Griffith, Facebook, and the American Dream Diluted the Gospel Stephen IngramThis book for youth leaders, pastors, and parents looks deep into the mirror of pop and church culture and asks the difficult and often maddening question, “Are those things we produce and consume defining us?” Stephen Ingram explores these themes of moralism, deism, meism, consumerism, pluralism, and therapeutic religion of pop culture, as well as current sociological and psychological data. Hollow Faith separates the values of the gospel from the cultural norms that have

domesticated them including: how we believe we should act (The Andy Griffith Show); how we want to be known (Facebook); what we aspire to become (the American Dream). Once we recognize these serious shifts in our faith, we can begin to have discussions, develop plans, and form actions to reclaim the vibrant, life-giving faith of the Bible. Includes a Parents Guide in the back. Abingdon Press.

The BasicsMichael AdkinsSome alarmists are claiming that the Christian faith is in danger of becoming extinct. We can no longer rely on culture to support the passing on of faith in Jesus Christ to the coming generations. The Basics study is not a quick fix to this situation. It is a handcrafted tool that when used by compassionate, caring, and committed adults, will ignite youth’s imagination for God, the Scripture, the faith community, and living a transformed life. It will likely raise more questions than it answers, and that’s intentional. Allow your teens the opportunity to leave with ideas and truths on which to reflect and wrestle as they use the daily devotionals provided in the Groove: The Basics Student Journal.

A new approach to nurturing faith in teens

Introducing

Confirm is a new confirmation and discipleship resource.

Confirmation leaders and churches will find practical help for nurturing sustainable faith in the lives of teenagers in a way that values their faith formation process. Confirm is flexible, adaptable, and scalable, while at the same time engaging adult participation.

Cokesbury. Coming in December.

ConfirmYour Faith. Your Commitment. God’s Call.

Too often confirmation has been downgraded to the role of a checkpoint along the faith journey. The Confirm family of resources reclaims confirmation as the first step on a journey that leads to a mature, adult faith. Confirm treats confirmation as more than a decision. Instead, it is the beginning of a conversation about what it means to be a Christian: living out your faith, your commitment, and God’s call.

Confirm is an easy-to-follow and fully customizable confirmation program that can be used in any church setting and with a wide variety of schedules. You have the option to schedule your lesson choices and the tools to organize your own confirmation program over the course of a school year, a 3-year span, or in any other way that meets your needs—without having to purchase additional customizable content.

With flexible and easy-to-understand materials, Confirm provides students with the basic beliefs of a theologically sound, United Methodist faith while engaging them in creative and thought-provoking activities to help them internalize what they’ve learned. Confirm also embraces the importance of community in the journey of faith development, and provides materials to encourage cooperation with parents and mentors in the confirmation process and beyond.

DireCtor GuiDe Book: This helpful guide provides direction for creating an effective discipleship path for teens during confirmation at your church. Complete with detailed instructions, Confirm integrates easily with the church’s youth ministry program and other ministries throughout the church. In addition, you will be provided tools for creating specific confirmation assessments and reasonable expectations for youth, pastor, parents, and confirmation leaders.

teaChinG PlanS Book:The fully customizable teaching book includes easy-to-follow lesson plans for 39 confirmation class sessions, along with lesson recommendations to choose from for a variety of time-frame options. Lesson planning, individual lesson templates, tools, and supplemental content are also provided for ease of customization.

The sessions are organized around the following content categories:• Theology• History• Belonging in the Community of Faith• Making a Faith Commitment• Understanding God’s Call

StuDent GuiDe:The Student Guide includes devotional readings, key information, and questions for journaling to help confirmands create their personal statements of faith.

Parent/FamilY GuiDe:The Parent/Family Guide provides an overview of confirmation and helps the parent and family establish their role in the process. The guide includes discussion starters, activities, and devotional suggestions for use at home. As teens prepare to take the vows of confirmation, they need to be surrounded by mature Christian adults who can love, guide, and nurture them. This love and nurturing begins at home, with the youth’s parent or guardian.

mentor GuiDe:The Mentor Guide provides an overview of the confirmation process and equips mentors with suggested relationship building ideas, as well as providing some of the dos and don’ts when taking on the role of mentor. A mentor doesn’t need to be a trained theologian or someone who has all the answers. Rather, a mentor is an adult who is mature in the faith and can walk alongside a young person on the confirmation journey.
