I hope our local government make something like this.

Jojo adoptante: I was amaze when i saw this show. Raffy Tulfo helping those people na walang work. and I was shock and a little bit of suprise. Sana po tumagal pa show mo Sir Raffy Tulfo.

tapped at present. But to Elijorde’s wife, Dailen, 43, the project site sits right below

where her family’s and the villagers’ houses stand. It is also below the designated area for small-scale miners who have made a living here since the early 80s.

Daileen’s family has lived and worked here for 25 years. She is worried that they would have nowhere else to go once a large-scale mining company operates here.

“We will be forced to vacate our homes and our livelihood because it would already be very unsafe for us,” Dailen told Davao Today.

On the PMDC’s May 13 bid bulletin, the government washed its hands off any responsibility or “liability” on the winning bidder’s mining operations. The government has placed the accountability of what will happen to the site solely on the winning bidder.

In a village assembly before the first PMDC-scheduled bidding on May 14, Mt. Diwata villagers opposed the plan to bid the area out to large mining firms, citing the grave hazards that could result. They also rejected the annual 20 million pesos social development projects dangled to them from the winning bidders.

“all we want is our safety and our livelihood,” Dailen said.

‘Better Option’“The government and the existing minders should develop

the area,” village councilor Ismael Herbolingo said in an april news conference.

Small-scale miners had been “straight-jacketed” to mine only the designated 729-hectare gold rush site in the above 600-meter above-sea-level elevation. The small-scale mining area being managed by another government-controlled agency, the Natural Resource Development Corporation, has been almost completely mined-out.

“We’re already lucky if we get one gram of gold ore per sack. It was so unlike before when we get high-grade or about five grams of gold ore per sack,” Velasco said.

Big mining firms threaten to displace thousandsConclusion

Manila-based environment group Kalikasan said on June 9 that of the four prequalified bidders, the Philex Mining Corp would most likely win. Philex is the country’s largest mining firm which figured in a mining. Among the disaster in Northern Luzon where it operates Benguet mines. Other firms prequali-fied to bid are the APC Group Inc./South China Resources Inc., the Carrascal Nickel Corporation and the construction firm FF Cruz & Co. Inc.

The winning bidder will tap the area underneath the 729-hectare populated gold-rush site which largely remained un-

C O M M E N T A R Y

In the bidding process, small-time miners have no match against big-time bidders.

Environment group Panalipdan said Diwalwal’s problems would not go away if government would not reverse its policy of exporting minerals.

“Government should take over the control of the industry, regulate and plan its usage,” said Francis Morales, spokesperson of Panalipdan in Southern Mindanao.

“This extractive policy only benefits the big capitalist nations such as the US, China, Canada and australia and the corporations that have anchored their economic profits and industrial mineral needs on our own resources.” Bulatlat.com

THE assistant general manager of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Of-fice (PCSO) yesterday denied receiving “jueteng” payola and a P2-million Mini Cooper car from an operator of the illegal numbers game.

Conrado Zabella, PCSO assistant general manager for online lottery sec-tion, said he vehemently denies all the allegations pointing to him as one of the two PCSO executives who are receiving a monthly payoff from “jueteng.”

Zabella said he was dismayed upon learning that he was the PCSO official being alluded to in the privilege speech of Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago and also at the testimony of “jueteng” whistle-blower Sandra Cam, who testified in a Senate investigation.

Zabella also branded as baseless reports tagging him as the official who got a Mini Cooper car from a certain gambling lord from Pampanga, as alleged by Santiago and Cam.

“Hindi ako nakatanggap o tuma-tanggap ng jueteng payola. Wala, wala Mini Cooper or anything. Paano kami tatanggap niyan ‘di naman kami protec-tor ng jueteng. Hindi ko nga alam itsura ng Mini Cooper, ‘di pa ko nakakakita niyan,” Zabella said.

Zabella said he only has a Hyundai Starex van that is registered under his name and he got it through a car loan from the PCSO.

He said in his 34 years in government service and 22 years of that he dedicated at the PCSO. He said his name had never been tarnished by allegations of graft and corruption.

Zabella pointed out that he has never

been involved in any anomaly at the PCSO from the time he worked at the government charity institution.

“Thirty four years in government ser-vice and I’m about to retire, then masisira ka lang ng ganun. We deserve naman due process kasi ang public opinion matindi talaga,” he quipped.

The office of Zabella handles and screens the applications of duly registered corporations that want to operate the small town lottery.

Zabella said he welcomes any in-vestigation by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to finally reveal the truth behind the allegation. “We welcome NBI’s initiative to conduct a probe to determine the veracity of the report.

Zabella is now on sick leave due to his slip disc problems.

PCSO exec deniesreceiving payola

THE National Bureau of Investi-gation (NBI) has yet to come out with a clear report as to the motive and identities of the perpetrators behind Sunday's post-Bar examinations violence that left over 40 persons injured.

Justice Secretary Leila De Lima said the NBI held a case confer-ence earlier yesterday and the mo-tives behind the grenade explosion outside the De La Salle University DLSU) campus in Manila remain

undetermined.“There is no clear angle yet, even

the fraternity war. There were five young men around the area who did not look like law students. At this point, they're (NBI) unwilling to state clearly that it's a fraternity war,” said De Lima.

Conflicts among law school fra-ternities are widely believed to be the cause of Sunday's violence, charac-terized by a grenade explosion and throwing of beer bottles.

Still no clear suspects in Sunday’s blast

DepEd working on teachers’ pay for barangay pollsTHE Department of Education (DepEd) is iron-

ing out agreements with other government agen-cies and lawyers' groups to ensure the security and compensation of some 450,000 teachers that will man the October 25 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections.

DepEd spokesman lawyer Alberto Muyot said agreements need to be forged particularly with the

Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Com-mission on Elections (Comelec).

Muyot said they want the teachers to get their honorarium in lump sum instead of installment basis as in past elections.

He said they will also push the Comelec to provide insurance coverage for the teachers, espe-cially those assigned to dangerous areas.

EK through the yearsFrom the time Enchanted Kingdom

opened its doors to an adoring public and declared that “the magic is here,” the spell that it had cast over all guests that have gone through its gates have never ceased and continue to live on and on. That “magic” has continued to fascinate and create countless experi-ences that will forever live on among those who have visited the country’s first and only world-class theme park.

EK, in the course of the last fifteen years, had become witness to countless giggling pre-school and elementary children during their initial visit, who have since gone back as teens and young adults, now more than ever qualified to experience and enjoy all of the Kingdom’s rides and attractions. They shriek with joy and excitement as they “feel the magic” with every swing of Anchors Away and every cycle of the Wheel of Fate.

In fact, the gondolas of the Wheel of Fate also gently rotate as mute wit-nesses to professions of love and af-fection among families, friends, couples and lovers of all ages. The magic has lived on with these couples who have found Enchanted Kingdom to be a truly special and romantic place. As a matter of fact, some of these couples may be the same happily married ones who now bring their children to enjoy the rides and attractions at our Boulderville Zone!

Enchanted Kingdom has also served as a venue for professionals and career-driven parents and adults who just want to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city with its traffic

congestion, noise and polluted air. It is a place where one is able to let their hair down, bring back memories of their youth or just enjoy the laid back ambiance of the Grand Carou-sel at Victoria Park Zone or a quiet stroll along the quaint main street of Brooklyn Place.

EK, in all its years of existence, was able to carve out a special place in the hearts and minds of its guests, bringing lifelong positive experiences and memories. Truly, “the magic stays with you” with every visit to Enchanted Kingdom.

As Enchanted Kingdom celebrates its fifteenth anniversary, “the magic lives on” and will continue to do so for generations to come as we of continue to strive to provide magical experiences through our rides, attractions, and themed entertainment.

A lifetime of magical experiences – this is Enchanted Kingdom’s promise.

EK’s 15th Year Logo There are a number of symbolisms

in Enchanted Kingdom’s 15th Anniver-sary Logo. Of course, the numeral “15” represents the number of years being commemorated.

The numeral “15” is rendered in crystalline form as “Crystal” represents 15 years. The crystalline numeral “1” represents a subliminal rendering of EK’s newest and upcoming ride attrac-tion – “EKstreme Tower Ride” – our 15th Year Anniversary offering to all our valued and faithful patrons.

EK’s new EKstreme Tower Ride rises 150 feet into the sky, symbolically, 10 feet for every year that Enchanted

Kingdom has been continually providing magical experiences. Eldar the Wiz-ard’s hat sits as the “crown” on top of the ride representing Enchanted Kingdom’s “towering” milestone achievement and continued leadership in the country, being the first, and continues to be, the only world-class theme park in the Philippines.

EK’s True Mission The shareholders, management

and all cast members of Enchanted Kingdom will continue to be an active source of happiness and well-being to all those we touch as a way of spreading God’s Kingdom here on earth, because at Enchanted Kingdom, Jesus is the REAL CEO.

Enchanted Kingdom is open Thurs-days and Fridays from 12NN to 7PM and from 11AM to 9PM on Saturdays and Sundays until December 17. Fire-works display is staged at 8:30 PM. For more details you may call (632) 584-3535 or 584-4326 to 29. You may also log on to www.enchantedkingdom.ph.

MARIEL AT ROBIN

Usually three times a week kung ilabas niya ito.

PAK!

Huwag palampasin! 8 p.m. at may replay ng 10:30 p.m., walang iba kundi sa Qtv 11! Get well soon nga pala kay Ate Jo at sa kanyang Mother! And Happy Birthday to Edwin “Bibay” Lansang!!! PAK!

congestion, noise and polluted air.

PAK!

Milo Champ Camp helps kids aim for the championship

EvEry day, in its ultra-modern plant located at the Laguna International Industrial Park (LIIP) in Biñan, La-guna, Gardenia Bakeries Philippines, Inc. (GBPI) bakes more than a hundred thousand packs of the soft, aromatic and “healthy-licious” loaves that literally changed the way Filipinos choose, eat and enjoy their bread.

The Best of the Breads

For one thing, Gardenia has invested in technolog-ically-advanced equipment sourced from internation-ally renowned suppliers from Germany, the Netherlands, U.K. and the U.S. This allows Gardenia to meet the grow-ing demand of their superior quality baked goods.

The hygienic system Gardenia employs complies strictly with current Good Manufacturing Processes (cGMP) and follows the highest standard for food quality and safety through the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the Hazard Analysis and Criti-cal Control Point (HACCP) practices.

When Gardenia loaves

get to the supermarket or to your “suking tindahan,” it is sealed using the pio-neering color-coded G-lock system that tells you the day of the week for which the bread was baked for. The G-lock color coding is part of Gardenia’s quality control system.

The technology Gardenia employs and the processes it has put in place guarantee the freshness of bread – indispensible to enjoying the texture and taste of the bread that’s so good, it can be eaten without “palaman.” Indeed, while there have been many new brands available in the market, no one has matched Gardenia’s softness, aroma and breadth

of new products.Every piece of Gardenia

bread is baked using pre-mium flour from U.S. wheat, especially milled to Garde-nia’s world-class standards. The sugar it uses for its baked goods is calibrated to the grade Gardenia requires. The milk comes from the U.S., Australia and New Zealand, while all the other ingredients are sourced from the best suppliers from all over the world.

With such superior in-gredients, it is not surprising Gardenia has always been the favorite brand that is so delicious that it can be eaten on its own, even without “palaman.”

Believing in the power of nurturing sports champions from the grassroots levels, the Milo Philippines’ Champ Camp Team is visiting schools nationwide to teach students the fundamentals in sports, the importance of proper nutrition, and the sports lessons they can use in the bigger world as they grow up.

For the Milo Champ Camp School Tour, the students are divided into three batches. each batch is ushered to the activity area where they will learn the basic skills of three popular sports: basketball, baseball, and soccer from certified Milo coaches. After 15 minutes, the coaches will rotate the batches so that all the children will get a feel of the three sports.

The camp also has activities for parents who will be given lectures on the benefits of sports and how to prepare meals that provide proper nutrition for a healthy, growing kid. Parents will also be taught to encourage their kids to be active and get into sports to develop values such as confidence, self-esteem, patience, teamwork, leadership, and an overall posi-tive and mature outlook.

The Champ Camp is very timely, considering that data from the Food and nutrition institute (FnRi) show that a growing number of Filipino children are becoming overweight at a younger age and are more likely to be obese (or having 120 percent of the desired body weight vis-à-vis a person’s height), which in turn puts them at a higher risk for car-diovascular diseases and hypertension, two health issues that rank among the top ten leading causes of death among Filipinos.

in a 2003 study, FnRi said that 1 percent of young children (1-10 years old) and 3 percent of adolescents (11-17 years old) were classified as over-weight. Among private school children specifically, there was an even higher prevalence of obesity that ranged from 25 to 50 percent. The major reasons stated for the development of obesity in both studies were a sedentary lifestyle and a consistent intake of high-calorie, high-fat food.

Of the 700 schools targeted by the MILO Champ Camp, 460 public and private schools have already been reached by the tour.

“The Milo Champ Camp aims to provide the students all over the country the basic skills needed for the sport of basketball, soccer and softball,” said Papasin. “We want them to experience the benefits of sports at an early age for them to be active and fit from a young age.” She added that the Champ Camp is also an avenue for “late-bloomer” athletes. “After experiencing Champ Camp in their school, these kids decided to have serious and proper training in the sport of their choice.”

The Champ Camp is ongoing in different schools until December this year.

In addition, Gardenia matches yumminess with the highest health stan-dards, making its transfat-free breads fortified with vitamins A, B1, B2, B3 and C and enriched with minerals like calcium, iron, and folate. Folate is one of the water-soluble B-complex vitamins that is good for pregnant women as it helps in averting birth defects such as brain or spinal cord defects, and may also help people of all ages in cell regeneration.

In this vein, Gardenia also extended its line of “healthy-licious” bread prod-ucts including High Fiber Whole Wheat Bread, High Calcium Milk Bread, Sugar Free 12-Grain Loaf, Honey Oat Loaf and Slim & Fit Wheaten Bread.

Its commitment to taste and health has also led to campaigns advocating the importance of breakfast in the household, particularly among kids. It created a Well-ness Team of nutritionists and dietitians to educate consumers on why breakfast

is important to good nutrition, its lifelong benefits and how it plays an important role in a healthy, active lifestyle.

Because Gardenia has consistently proven itself head and shoulders above the other brands when it comes to freshness, taste, aroma, softness and nutri-tive value, Gardenia offers true value for money – a fact supported by many who would rather go without bread than serve another brand to their families.

When Gardenia was first introduced to the market 12 years ago, people weren’t very particular about the kind of loaves they served on their breakfast table. Gardenia almost instanta-neously changed the Fili-pino’s bread-buying habits. A single try made Gardenia the instantly preferred brand for loaves because nothing in the market came close to Gardenia’s freshness, taste, aroma and softness.

Today, more than a decade later, nothing still does.

THE government will study the feasibility of using nuclear energy in addressing a foreseen power shortage in the country.

In a media briefing in Malacañang, Energy Secretary Jose Rene Almendras said the Department of Energy (DOE) is now working for the approval of some P50-million budget for the study on nuclear technology.

“If that is approved, hopefully we can start that next year,” Almendras said.

Almendras said the Philippine study is in line with the commitment of member countries in the Association of South East

Asian Nations (ASEAN) to implement activities on the peaceful and safe use of nuclear energy when he attended the 28th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) in Da Lat, Viet Nam last July.

“The study we want to do is non-military use of nuclear energy. This is really along the lines of something that we agreed to with the rest of the As-sociation of South East Asian Nations in Da Lat where we agreed with all the ministers of energy that we would like to work together in preparing the safety standards for non-military nuclear use,” Almendras said.

PDEA nabs young drug peddlerAGENTS of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) announced

yesterday the arrest of a suspected notorious pusher during a buybust opera-tion in Muntinlupa City last Monday.

PDEA Director General Dionisio R. Santiago identified the suspect as Andrew Kim Santos Mercado, 20 years old, married, jobless, a resident of No. 613 Argana Street, Poblacion, Muntinlupa City.

Dionisio said the suspect is reportedly a member of the Nancy Anduru Drug Group, which operates in Muntinlupa and other nearby cities and provinces.

Mercado was caught by operatives of the PDEA Metro Manila Regional Office, led by Director III Wilkins M. Villanueva, after he sold a heat-sealed transparent plastic sachet containing suspected metamphetamine hydrochlo-ride or shabu to a PDEA undercover agent who acted as poseur buyer.

Also recovered from his immediate possession and control were 10 heat-sealed transparent plastic sachets containing the suspected illegal drugs with an aggregate weight of 45.2 grams.

Several years ago, my husband helped to lead a work crew of high school students on a short-term missions trip to a Christian school in an urban community. Unfortunately, Tom had broken his foot shortly before the trip and was supervising the work from a wheelchair. He was discouraged because he wasn’t able to get around as he had hoped.

While he was working on the ground floor, a few of the girls were painting on the third floor. He could hear them singing praise choruses in harmony as their voices echoed down the wide-open staircases. Song after song minis-tered to him. “It was the most beautiful sound I’d ever heard,” he told me later. “And it lifted my spirits.”

Colossians 3 reminds us, “Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord” (v.16). Not only were those teenage girls giving sweet praise to God, they were ministering to a co-worker.

Whatever you’re doing today, cultivate an attitude of praise. Whether it is through song or conversation, let your joy in the Lord reverber-ate to others. You never know who you might encourage.

Our words of praise and songs of joy Can be a welcomed gift

To those who need encouragement— Whose spirits need a lift. —Sper

JRU remains hopeful for Final Four bid

JOSE Rizal outlasted Mapua, 83-78, yesterday to remain in contention for the last Final Four berth in the juniors’ division of the 86th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

Cris dela Paz fired 21 points while Kevin Oliveria and Jerome Garcia scattered 20 points apiece to help send the Light Bombers in a three-way tie with the St. Benilde Junior Blazers and Letran Squires on 9-7 (win-loss) slate.

Jose Rizal and Letran, however, drew the lowest quotient scores and would fight it out in a knockout match at 10 a.m. tomorrow with the win-ner battling it out with CSB, which emerged with the highest tiebreaker, on Monday in a another no-tomorrow contest for the fourth and last slot in the Final Four.

Ateneo captures grand slam victoryTHE Ateneo Blue Eagles

whipped top-ranked Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws, 65-62, yesterday to capture their third consecutive UAAP title this season 73 at the Araneta Coliseum.

Blue Eagles coach Norman Black brought his grand slam touch to the UAAP men’s basketball tournament as he led his team to win the crown this season.

Black, who steered the San Miguel Beermen to a three-peat in

the PBA in 1989, accomplished his second Triple Crown following the upset win over the Tamaraws.

“This is the most difficult championship that we’ve won. It’s a total team effort. Thank you to the Ateneo community for sticking with us,” said Black, who now joins the ranks of former col-legiate coaches Franz Pumaren of La Salle, Aric Del Rosario of UST and the legendary Baby Dalupan of UE in winning three consecutive

UAAP crowns. While Black mapped out Ate-

neo’s plays in every huddle, it was Ryan Buenafe who did most of the damage inside the court.

Buenafe, who struggled of-fensively this season, delivered the knockout punches in the payoff period as he helped the Katipunan-based squad complete a two-game sweep of their best-of-three Finals showdown against the Tamaraws.
