ANDREW AND JANE COGHLIN
28 MARCH 2015
RESEARCH REPORT OBJECTIVES Andrew and Jane Cochlan were known to have buried their third child in Manchester, England in July 1869. In 1870 they were listed in the U.S. census for Renovo, Clinton County, Pennsylvania with their two children Mary Anne, age 5 and Andrew, age 4. This census was enumerated 13 June 1870. By 1880 the children are living back in England with their aunt and the whereabouts of Andrew and Jane Coghlin are unknown. Note: While there are various forms of the surname, for the purposes of this report, the form will be used that corresponds to the record in which it appeared. The client’s objectives were:
1. To find out what happened to Andrew and Jane Coghlin after 1870. 2. To find out if they died and if any death notices or burial information can be found.
RESULTS Andrew and Jane Coghlin had two more children after reaching the United States and these daughters, Agnes born in 1871, and Julia born in 1872, remained in the U.S. Agnes was raised by the Joseph Spencer family of Renovo and Julia was raised by Jane and her second husband, Oscar Lindholm. Julia was reported to have been born August 1872 in Kane, McKean County, Pennsylvania. Jane married for the second time about 1873-‐1875 according to her various census records and reportedly her two sons William (b.abt. 1875) and Carl (b.abt. 1877) were born in Kane as well. This would place the point that Andrew either died or left the family as between about 1872-‐1873 in Kane, McKean County, Pa. about 90 miles northwest of Renovo and bordering New York State. Much initial research was done trying to find evidence of the death of Andrew Coghlin in Renovo, Clinton County; however evidence found later pointed to McKean County as his likely

place of death, if he did indeed die in Pennsylvania and not move back to England or go elsewhere. Ultimately no direct evidence of his death was found. Death records were not kept by the state or county at the time and no obituaries or cemetery listings were discovered. Jane Coghlin Lindholm died just short of her 97th birthday in Buffalo, New York. She was buried in Renovo with her second husband, Oscar Lindholm, in the Fairview Cemetery, Farwell, Pa. which is near Renovo. Andrew Cochlan In 1861 Andrew Cochlan was a widowed Boot Maker, age 35, living at 28 Birmingham St., Manchester, Lancashire, England.1 A Google Earth search for 28 Birmingham St was made however the exact address appears to no longer exist. The evidence suggests Andrew was first married in 1858 to Bridget Lawler who died in 1859, information that is already known by the client. 2
According to the available tax lists Andrew lived at this address, which he rented from a Mr. Cheetum, from1860 until 1869.3 Here he paid a tax known as the Poor’s Rate, a tax used to provide relief for the poor.4 Andrew last paid the tax 4 September 1869 and did not pay it at the next due date of December 1869, which suggests he could have emigrated in the last few months of 1869. An exhaustive search of the passenger lists into New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and other entry points did not reveal a listing for this family, most likely due to their last name being misspelled or indecipherable, rendering it difficult to index. 1869 Manchester England Tax List

Andrew and Jane Cochlan in America By 13 June 1870 Andrew and his wife Jane, with surviving children Mary Ann, age 5, and Andrew, age 4, were living in Renovo, Clinton County, Pennsylvania. Here Andy is working as a Shoemaker.
1870 U.S. Census Record for Renovo, Clinton County, Pennsylvania5
Renovo Borough, along the western bank of the Susquehanna River, began its formation in 1862 when the Philadelphia and Erie Railroad purchased land and established a rail yard. Within a few years proximately 2000 people lived there, most in newly constructed boarding houses. According to the History of Centre and Clinton Counties, Pennsylvania: This pretty railroad town is emphatically in the mountains, and all who visit it are charmed with its picturesque surroundings. 6 Thus it is likely that the prospect of relocating to a newly formed and growing town offered a promising business opportunity for Andrew. By the time of the 1870 census he does show a personal income of $300, which considering his family, former bankruptcy, and the expense of the recent immigration, may show that he was starting to prosper. A search of the 1868-‐1877 tax records for Renovo was made for Andrew, as that could show the year he started and ended paying taxes there, the idea being it would suggest a year he may have moved or died. However he was not found in the tax lists for Renovo. What Became of Andrew and Jane Coghlin? By 1880 the children Mary Ann and Andrew Coghlin were back in Manchester, England living with an aunt and the whereabouts of the parents Andrew and Jane are unaccounted. One theory was that they returned to England and died, although no death or cemetery records place them back in England. Another premise was that they both died in Renovo between 1870 and 1881.

Operating under the theory that Andrew and Jane both died in Renovo, Clinton County, between 1870 and 1880, a search was begun for any records in Clinton County. Pennsylvania did not keep official vital records between 1870 and 1881; therefore other means had to be identified to attempt to locate this information. The Clinton County Historical Society has an extensive 12 volume set of local cemetery records and none of them contained a listing for either of the parents. The Coghlins were thought to be Catholic and St. Joseph’s, the Renovo Catholic Church did not start their cemetery until 1876. Information from the Clinton County Genealogical Society states that Catholics were thought to have been buried in the North Bend Cemetery in North Bend, Pa. before St. Joseph’s. While the cemetery has been fully indexed on Find A Grave.com two calls were made to this cemetery to find out if they might have additional records however the calls were not returned. Due to harsh winter conditions the researcher was not able to travel to Clinton County but did have researchers in the area; however they were not able to find the burial site of any Coghlins. Of note there is also an Irish Laborers Cemetery for Irish immigrants who worked on the railroad and died in Renovo.7 These are unmarked and believed to be unrecorded graves under the current rail yard. While Andrew was not known to work for the railroad, it is possible indigent residents of Irish heritage could have been buried there. There is also an obituary index to the Renovo Record, the town newspaper which began in 1871, and no listings for anyone named Coghlin was found there as well. A search of Clinton County Orphans Court records and Probate records did not reveal any listings for the Coghlins. Pennsylvania counties, with few exceptions, did not begin keeping official death records until 1893 and a search of these 1893-‐1906 records did not show any record for the couple. Also no deeds were found for Andrew Coghlin. While the bulk of the research was done in Renovo, items discovered toward the end of the research would offer an explanation of why no records were found for Andrew here, other than the 1870 census. Agnes Coghlan The only documentation for the Coghlins in Clinton County, besides the entry in the 1870 census, was a marriage record for Agnes Coghlan, age 20, daughter of Andrew and Jane Coghlan, who married a railroad engineer named Matthew Hulbert in 1891 in Renovo. A search was made for Agnes with the Spencer family in the 1880 U.S. census for Renovo. (Note there is no 1890 census as almost the entire 1890 U.S. census was destroyed). Here Agnes, age 9, is listed as the daughter of Joseph and Mary C. Spencer. A Mary C. age 2 is also listed in the household. Joseph, a machinist, was born in England. 11 The birthplace of the parents of Agnes is listed here as England (father) and Pennsylvania (mother) which is incorrect. 1880 U.S. Census for Joseph Spencer and family
Subsequent census records show that the wife of Joseph was called Catherine or Kate, indicating the Mary C. was likely Mary Catherine, and that the daughter Mary C. was her natural child.12 The death record for Mary Sheehan of Renovo states that Mary was born 12 December 1877, the daughter of Joseph Spencer born in England and Catherine Stuart, thus providing more evidence that she was the true daughter of Joseph and Mary Catherine and not another child of Andrew and James Coghlan.13 Agnes Coghlan Hulbert In 1900 Agnes Hulbert, age 28, is living in Buffalo, New York, with her husband Mathew, a locomotive engineer. They have been married 8 years and have no children.14

Mary Spencer Sheehan Since it was known Agnes was raised with the Spencer family a search was made to see if there were any descendants of the girl with whom she was raised, Mary Spencer, in case they might know what happened to the parents of Agnes. Mary C. Spencer, who was raised as the “sister” of Agnes, also never had children, thus closing this line of inquiry as well. The 1910 census shows Mary C. unmarried at age 32 living with her mother next door to the Sheehan family18 and subsequent records revealed she married her next door neighbor Thomas Sheehan.
1920 U.S. Census for Marie (Mary) and Thomas Sheehan19
The Three Maiden Names of Agnes Hulbert Up until the discovery of the obituary of Agnes Hulbert, most of the research had been done trying to document the family in Renovo, with the hypothesis that Andrew and Jane had both died in Renovo between 1870 and 1879. With the discovery of the obituary the research took a new turn and uncovered some surprising information. The 1952 obituary of Agnes Hulbert, widow of Mathew, was puzzling as it listed her maiden name as Lindholm and stated she was survived by a Mrs. Anderson, William Lindholm of Indianapolis, and Mrs. J.D. Shull. This Agnes Hulbert lived at 1881 Bailey Ave., Buffalo at the address which corresponded to Mathew Hulbert, the railroad engineer. Agnes of Renovo was known to have married a railroad engineer named Mathew Hulbert of Buffalo. Could there be two Mathew Hulberts who were railroad engineers in Buffalo at the same time or could Agnes of Renovo have died and Mathew married another Agnes (Lindholm) who was also born in Pa. about the same time? Was there another alternative?

1952 Obituary of Agnes (nee Lindholm) Hulbert20
From her 1891 Renovo marriage certificate it was learned that Agnes was the daughter of Andrew and Jane Coghlan, but when her marriage was listed in the newspaper she was referred to as Agnes Spencer. Now an obituary gave her maiden name as Lindholm. Could these three names all be the same Agnes? The evidence would prove that the answer is yes. When a search for the brother William Lindholm revealed he was born in Pennsylvania and worked for the railroad, subsequent searches would lead back to Wetmore, McKean, Pa, about 90 miles from Renovo near the New York State border. Jane Lindholm In the 1880 census, taken August 5th, we find Jane, age 39, now married to a Swedish immigrant, O.W. Lindholm, a shoemaker, age 36. Though no official marriage records were kept at the time (or death records) and no documentation was found that Jane Coghlin remarried the evidence from this and subsequent census records clearly indicate this is Jane Coghlin, who was married to Andrew. In 1880 Jane and O.W. Lindstrom are living in Wetmore, McKean, Pa. Jane’s birthplace is given as York, England. Her mother and father were also born in England, according to the census. Jane and O.W. have three children. The oldest is a daughter Julia, age 7, born Kane, Pa. Julia’s father was born ‘Ireland’, so we know O.W. is not her father, and presumably her father is Jane’s first husband Andrew who may be either deceased or has left.

The other children in the household are William, age 5, and Carl, 3, also born in Kane, Pa. The father of the boys is noted as born in Sweden, so we can assume O.W. is their father, which suggests that she and O.W. were probably married about 1874, likely in Kane. Kane was another new town (like Renovo) founded in 1863, which borders the area of the present day Allegheny National Forest. The population in 1890, the earliest date found, was 2,944.21 Therefore it appears from this information that Andrew may have only lived in Renovo for 1 to 2 years at most before moving on to Kane in McKean County.

In the 1900 we find Jane, 62, her husband Oscar W. Lindholm, 55, and two daughters: Julia C., 27, and Catherine, 19, living in back in South Renovo, Clinton County. The couple has been married for 27 years (since1873-‐1874). Jane was born in England, Jan. 1838. Oscar was born in Sweden, in May, 1845. He immigrated 1870, has lived in the U.S. for 29 years. Jane immigrated in 1870, and has been in the U.S. 30 years. Of the 9 children born to her, only six are still alive. This would be Agnes, Julia C., Catherine, William (who is now living in Indianapolis) and two others, presumably Mary Anne and Andrew, back in England.
1900 U.S. Census for Jane and Oscar Lindholm24
Julia C. was listed as being born August 1872 and Catherine in July 1880. Catherine is Oscar’s daughter, but Julia C. is not, according to the 1880 census information. However, as Oscar clearly raised her, Jane (or Oscar) report that the father of both girls was born in Sweden on this record or it could have been an assumption based on the part of the enumerator. In 1910, Jane Lindholm, 72, is still in South Renovo, Clinton, Pa. living with Oscar W., her husband, aged 65. Their address was 200 Pennsylvania Ave, near the corner of Clinton. This was the 2nd marriage for both of them, they had been married to each other for 35 years (est. 1874-‐1875) and of the 9 children born to her, only six were still living. This would be Agnes, Julia C, William, Katherine and two others, presumably Mary Anne and Andrew, back in England. Oscar W., born in Sweden, worked as a laborer in a railroad shop and had immigrated in 1872 and was now naturalized. Jane, born in England, immigrated in 1870. If August 1872 is the correct birth date for Julia that would mean Andrew was at least alive until December 1871.

1910 U.S. Census for Jane and Oscar W. Lindholm25
By 1910, Julia C., 27 the sister of Agnes, and her husband Dr. John D. Shull, 58, were residing at 1814-‐20 Guilford Ave, in Baltimore. They had been married 7 years. Also living there was Clare O. his 16 year old son (by his first wife). Julia had no children. She reports here that her father was born in Ireland, mother in England, adding more evidence that Oscar Lindholm was not her biological father.
1910 U.S. Census for Julia (Coghlin) Shull26
In 1930, Jane Lindholm, now 92, lived with her daughter Katherine, 49, and Katherine’s husband, Andrew Anderson, 49, who was a chiropractor. They lived at 1896 Bailey Ave, only a few doors from Agnes and Mathew Hulbert, who lived at 1881 Bailey Ave. Jane reported she was married at the age of 22 (presumably she meant her first marriage). Katherine gave 24 as her marriage age. Katherine worked as a saleslady in millinery. Her son Charles, 23, worked in a railroad office.

The Death of Jane Lindholm
Jane Coghlin Lindholm died just short of her 97th birthday at the home of her daughter Katherine in Buffalo, New York. She was buried near Renovo with her second husband Oscar Lindholm.
Her obituary makes no mention of her first marriage or of her children Mary Ann and Andrew, but does mention the two children who remained in the United States, Agnes and Julia. The obituary was most likely written by her daughter Katherine and one wonders if it is possible she did not know about the other siblings.

The Mystery of Andrew Coghlin
While the evidence suggests Andrew was not with the family after 1873-‐1874 no records were found to explain what happened to him. Extensive searching in Clinton County did not show anything. He did not appear on the obituary or cemetery index for McKean County, according to a search by the librarian at the Kane Library.29 The Kane newspaper did not begin publication until 1885 and McKean County newspapers that existed for the time are digitized and able to be searched, however nothing was found on the death of Andrew. The Catholic Church in Kane, St. Callistus, did not form until 1878. No record was found for Andrew in this cemetery. Jane and Agnes would eventually be members of the Lutheran Church, however it was thought he may have been Catholic. As no record was found for Andrew, the possibility exists that he did return to England with Mary Ann and Andrew in the 1870s.
Summary
Andrew and Jane Coghlin had two more children after immigrating to the United States. Andrew likely died in Kane, McKean County, Pennsylvania or left the area around 1872-‐1873. If he did die in Pennsylvania this occurred at a time when the county and state did not keep official death records and no other records could be found. As Mary Ann and Andrew Jr. would have been about 16 and 15 respectively when they were back in England in 1881, the possibility exists that Andrew took them back. If he did die in Pennsylvania it is unlikely (although possible) they could have made the journey unaccompanied and therefore another friend or relative may have taken them back to England. Jane Coghlin remarried Oscar Lindholm around 1873-‐1875 and had at least 3 more children. Jane Coghlin Lindholm died in New York at age 96 and was buried near Renovo. As it appears that neither Agnes nor Julia were known to have had children the client likely has no relatives in the United States who would have been from the issue of Andrew and Jane, although there are undoubtedly descendants of the Swedish half siblings.

Suggestions for Future Research
Additional research could be done in McKean County looking for evidence of the death of Andrew Coghlin. Many research hours were spent looking for him in Clinton County, as that was his only known place of residence in the United States. It was only after an exhaustive search was done in Clinton County that records pointed to Agnes Hulbert in New York and ultimately to McKean County, Pa. Research could also be done in England looking for the death record of Andrew there, unless the client has prior knowledge that he did not die there. Another phase of research could focus on the Lindholm half siblings, especially the family of Katherine Anderson with whom Jane lived in her old age. Perhaps the family of the son Carl has knowledge of what happened to Andrew and family photos and other information that would be of interest. This phase could be accomplished relatively quickly. The Erie County New York death records for Jane Coghlin Lindholm and Agnes Hulbert and could be ordered from the Clerk of the Courts.
