Coffs Harbour Public School
20th February, 2019
Dear Parents and Carers,
I am loving walking around the school seeing happy children in classrooms and the playground. One of our Positive Behaviour for Learning ( PBL) expectations is to walk safely around our school. Students take this seriously and it is a delight to see classes and groups of children walking on the concrete. Well done students.
Last Wednesday the P & C held their first meeting. Thank you to the parents who attended. At the meeting Emma McClellan put in her resignation as Secretary. This position is now open. On behalf of the school, a huge thank you to Emma for her fantastic work as secretary of the P & C. Our next P & C meeting is 13th March.
Seesaw
As part of the staff meeting yesterday, teachers were taken through some training in how to use the Seesaw app. We are very excited to introduce this over the next few weeks into every classroom. Seesaw is a digital portfolio that gives you real-time glimpses into your child’s school day. Seesaw helps you stay in the loop and gives you an opportunity to support your child's learning at home. There will be more information over the next few weeks.
Newsletter
From now on the newsletter will be available each fortnight. This is common practice among most schools. So please look out for the newsletter on any of the following platforms including the Skoolbag App and the school website https://coffsharb-p.schools.nsw.gov.au or if requested, email.
School Contributions:
Thank you to the families who have paid their school contributions for 2019. This has been set at $50 per student and voluntary contribution set at $10 per student. We do our best to keep these costs down, however this money assists the school to provide technology in every classroom, art supplies and workbooks.
Please have a look at the calendar as there are
many exciting things happening over the year. The whole year’s calendar is included in this newsletter so you can plan ahead.
All the best to our swimmers this Friday for the school swimming carnival.
All the best,
Leonie

Assembly
Class 2F & 3/4H are performing at assembly this week. Come along and see what they are doing in class.
Mrs Leonie Buehler — School Principal
We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which we live and work and we pay our respects to the Elders both past and present
So far 3/4H has been busy getting to know each other and learning our routines. This term we
are learning about the Great Barrier Reef and we have discovered some amazing facts that we
are looking forward to sharing with you at our assembly on Thursday.
Welcome to 3/4H
Change of Sport’s House Names
Dear Parents / Caregivers,
Coffs Harbour Public School’s Aboriginal Education Committee in 2018 suggested a change of House
Names from what they currently are to Gumbaynggirr names. Local elders were consulted as was our
local Aboriginal Educational Consultative Group (AECG). Staff, parent and community surveys were
conducted and the majority are in support of the change. The majority voted for Option ‘B’ which were
Gumbaynggirr names for Earth, Water, Fire and Wind. So it looks as though change is upon us. If you
would like to provide any further feedback, ideas or suggestions, please feel free to return the feedback
slip to Coffs Harbour Primary School’s (CHPS) office.
- Regards CHPS Aboriginal Education Committee.
New house Names are:
* OXLEY - Water ngaarlu Blue * COOK - Fire waagay Red *PHILLIP - Wind gurriin Yellow * Flinders - Earth/land wajaarr Green

Sustainability Garden
Compost Bays completed
On behalf of Coffs Harbour Public School we would like to thank Simon Millar from Eucascapes Pty Ltd for all his hard work and dedication in completing our gardens
compost bays. We couldn’t be happier.
For most of us, recycling glass and plastic bottles, aluminium and metal cans and
cardboard, newspaper and other paper products has become automatic, but what
about the rest of our waste? Organics such as food scraps, food soiled paper products,
leaves and grass clippings comprise over 60% of our waste stream and are completely
recyclable. That’s where composting steps in. Having compost bays in our garden
allows us to start composting in our school to reduce our food waste and teach our
students the processes of composting and its importance. It is a natural process to
turn organic material into a soil amendment and is possible in almost every setting.
We can now get things started with composting lunch scraps; we can make a
difference one apple core at a time!
Parent Liaison News
Hello Parents
The week of Swimming Carnival and the week of
Assemblies is upon us! I hope that the parents of
the students participating in the Swimming Carnival
have a few minutes to go to the pool and watch
their child participate.
3/4H will perform at assembly on Thursday at 2pm
with 2F on stage from 2.30pm.
I have met many of the kindergarten parents and it
has been lovely to watch them settle in and get
used to lining up, following teacher’s direction and
being independent in their routines. I discovered
this wonderful old photo of the Kindergarten rooms
and thought about how different the school is now -
but also that routine is still important.
Thanks to the parents who responded positively to
the request for English Tutors from TAFE. They still
need more if you are able to help.
This newsletter is available from the school
website as well as the Skoolbag app. It can also
be emailed to you. Please ask at the office if you
need help with setting that up.
I hope to see all of you at school for Meet N Greet.
The opportunity to meet your child’s teacher and
hear how they are doing at school is precious so
please make an appointment. I am available to
assist if necessary.
Thanks for being wonderful parents to your
precious children.
