Arabica versus Robusta

Two varieties of coffee grown:Arabica - EthiopiaRobusta - Congo

ARABICA ROBUSTA More difficult to grow = expensive

Easier to grow = cheap

Needs: high altitude (800 -

2,000 m) moderate

temperatures (20-25o C)

regular rainfall low humidity

Needs: can grow from sea

level up to 700 m will tolerate

extreme heat less fussy about

amount of rain less fussy about

humidity More prone to disease and frost damage

Resistant to disease and pests

Delicate, refined flavours

Strong flavour

Less caffeine

Twice as much caffeine as arabica

70 percent of the world’s coffee is arabica.

30 percent of the world’s coffee is robusta.
