SIMON SAYSTake a moment for Christmas safetyIt’s a challenge to stay focused at work during this time of year. So, this is when it is especially important to take four seconds for safety. When you find yourself working away and your thoughts running wild with all the plans and activities of Christmas, STOP, take those four short seconds to look around and come back to the present moment. Look for a hazard in the middle of your activity. Are you standing on a ladder? Are you in an awkward position or about to trip on something lying on the floor? Hazards do not go away. Only our awareness of the hazards goes away. And when we ignore hazards, we tend to get injured.

IFS SPONSORS KANSANSHI CYCLE CHALLENGE TO RAISE AWARENESSABOUT CHILD MARRIAGESent in by Robert Mubaya | Regional Operations Manager | Zimbabwe & Zambia

On Saturday, 13th October at the Solwezi Stadium was the Kansanshi Single Gear Cycle Race. The rules of the race were that competitor’s bicycles may not have gears. This was to cater for members of our community who sometimes do not have gears on their bicycles. The race started at the Office of the President, with routes through town towards the airport and ended at Solwezi Stadium (11,7km). Interest in the cycle race was overwhelming, with over 300 entries, of which only 150 were allowed to compete, for road safety reasons. There was entertainment at the stadium during the race, including some motorcycle stuntmen and women, GBV singing and dancing. IFS donated 40 cases of water for the event.

FROM OUR CLIENT

Good day Robert & Team,

A big thank you for coming through at short notice to sponsor our event. It was the first time we have held such an event and we are glad it went well.

We had roughly 130 cyclists though the number registered was over 300. We had to trim it to manageable levels.

We hope to have it as an annual event and hopefully grow it further.

Once again, thank you so much and hope we can count on you in the coming years.

Thanks/Regards

Anthony Malambo | Kansanshi Mining Plc, Solwezi, Zambia

North-western Province Minister Nathaniel Mubukwanu has said parents should not use the vulnerability of their underage daughters as an excuse to marry them off.

Mr. Mubukwanu said government was commitment towards ensuring that every girl child in Zambia is given an opportunity to grow up into responsible members of society.

He said this yesterday when he flagged off the community cycling competition in Solwezi which was organised by Kansanshi Mine under the theme “stop child marriage.”

Mr. Mubukwanu commended the mining company for partnering with government in promoting the agenda against child marriages in the province.

He has meanwhile encouraged people to take up sporting activities such as cycling to avoid illnesses and to stay healthy.

And Kansanshi Mine Public Relations Manager Godfrey Msiska said the cycling competition, which attracted 300 cyclists, was aimed at sensitising the public against early child marriages.

Mr. Msiska said the mining firm decided to hold the cycling competition to enable community members to take up cycling as a sport.

He disclosed that the competition attracted 300 cyclists and only 150 were selected to participate in the 11.7 kilometres race.

He said out of the 150 participants, 22 were female.

Meanwhile Kansanshi Mine Corporate Social Responsibility Manager Bruce Lewis said the event has received overwhelming response from the corporate world such as financial institutions and other business organisations.

Mr. Lewis said the Kansanshi Mine plans to hold a bigger cycling competition next year which will allow more participants to take part in the event.

World Food Day is celebrated annually on 16th October by 150 countries across the world in support of the FAO’s mission to use the event to raise awareness and to gather greater support and understanding to the approaches that can help to end world hunger. The focus of the day is that food is a basic and fundamental human right.

Yet, in a world of billions, 2 billion people in the world suffer from various forms of malnutrition. Malnutrition is an underlying cause of death of 2.6 million children each year a third of child deaths globally2,3. 1 in 4 children in the world have stunted growth (low height- for- age)4 where in developing countries this is as high as 1 in 3 5. This means their bodies fail to develop fully as a result of malnutrition.

In Mozambique 43% of the children’s from 0-5 years suffer from chronic under malnutrition, the state of being poorly nourished and 45% of deaths among children under five is linked to malnutrition.

For us at IFS and AMA1 this was also the time to join the day and help raise awareness with Manguna’s children to protect their rights so we can get the mission of “Zero Hunger World by 2030 is possible”.

The event was held on the 20th of October at Manguna Primary School, where 400 children participated. The chief of the community was present as well as the government representative from Mute and Palma, AMA1, IFS and school representative (teachers, director, etc.)

The party was successful and entertaining and we had various people who made very encouraging speeches in appreciation of what IFS and AMA1 planned and made possible. A huge cake was prepared and t-shirts were given out. Cultural moments by

the students, diversity of games played by the kids and gifts (chips, 2 packages of biscuits, chocolate, apple, juice, water and soft drink) to the all kids, banner and painting.

The party went better than we expected, it was good and funny, the kids were happy to receive the gifts we provided them and engaged with the different types of games and jokes we prepared.

We would like to thank AMA1 for all support and assistance that was given to us in order to make this as any successful event. We also thank AMA1 for allowed us to take the message “Feeding the minds that feed the world” to the children’s and for all the presents for the party.References

THE 2018 EBOLA OUTBREAK IN THE DRC

KEY FACTS

• Ebola virus disease is a severe and often fatal illness in humans.

• The virus is transmitted to people from wild animals and spreads in the human population through human-to-human transmission.

• The average ebola case fatality rate is around 50%. Case fatality rates have varied from 25% to 90% in past outbreaks.

• The first ebola outbreaks occurred in remote villages in Central Africa, near tropical rainforests. The 2014–2016 outbreak in West Africa involved major urban areas as well as rural ones.

• Community engagement is key to successfully controlling outbreaks. Good outbreak control relies on applying a package of interventions, namely case management, infection prevention and control practices, surveillance and contact tracing, a good laboratory service, safe and dignified burials and social mobilisation.

• Early supportive care with rehydration, symptomatic treatment improves survival. There is as yet no licensed treatment proven to neutralize the virus but a range of blood, immunological and drug therapies are under development.
