F isch–ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer

A few days ago we celebrated one of the great feasts of the Church, All Saint’s Day. It is a day for us to honor, venerate (and petition) those disciples of the Lord who have gone before us into the kingdom of heaven. And we hope that one day we, too, will be counted among their number. The Feast of All Saints

does not simply recall the “hall of fame” saints such as Peter, Paul, Francis of Assisi, Margaret Mary, and Catherine of Sienna, et al. In fact we also honor all those countless disciples who have lived lives of faith, service and virtue and have thus entered into the joy of heaven. We have great reason to hope that this number includes those friends and family members who have preceded us in death. Most of us think of saints as being almost other-worldly and untouchable. We have these images of people who endured great suffering for their faith or who lived with such superlative virtue that they seem to be somehow superhuman. Seen in this fashion, the saints don’t seem like real people and we can conclude that holiness is beyond our grasp. The examples of their lives may not seem very inspirational because they appear to be too perfect and unlike the gritty struggles we confront in our hearts and lives each day. In fact, most saints were ordinary people like you and me who struggled with difficulties and personal failings (sometimes severe and scandalous ones) before “getting their act together.” Saints were real people who had strengths and limitations, virtues and shortcom-ings. There were in fact saints who did not like each other very much. There were saints who were grave sinners before turning their lives around. Perhaps we would be more inspired in our own pursuit of holi-ness if we were more familiar with full three-dimensional portraits of the real people behind the legends. To this end, I would like you to consider the following saint tidbits. We look at Peter and Paul as two of the greatest saints n all of human history. Yet, Peter denied even knowing Jesus and Paul led vigilante mobs that stoned early Christians to death. Later, Peter and Paul (neither being a shrinking violet) could barely stand to be in the same room with one another because they disagreed so vehemently about how to bring Gentiles into the Church. And let’s not forget that Matthew was a cheating/extortionist tax collector before he joined Jesus’ band of disciples. St. Moses the Ethiopian was a 4th century gang-banger who practiced theft, murder and rape before converting to Christ. St. Augustine lived a hedonistic life that would have made Hugh Hefner blush before he embraced the faith. He is known for his famous prayer: “O Lord, give me chastity...but not yet.” St. Jerome had a bad temper and could be surly. He accused St. Cyril of Jerusalem of being a heretic before recanting the charge. St. Callistus was a slave who skimmed money from the coffers he managed. Later, after mending his ways, he was elected pope. The losing candidate, Hippolytus was so bitter that he set himself up as the first antipope in history. 18 years later, Hipploytus reconciled with the Church. He, too, became vener-ated as a saint. Another St. Cyril (this one from Alexandria) helped to depose another saint, St. John Chrysostom. These are just a few snippets of hundreds upon hundreds that show how many of the great saints of history struggled to over-come their human weakness. But if they could do it, we can too. Saint-hood is not perfection, it is growth and consuming dedication to Christ and his Gospel. Each and every one of us is called to holiness, not in some sterile, plastic way but amidst the messiness and trials of daily life and with the help of those around us. Holiness is a journey, not

Receive a Plenary Indulgence During the Year of Faith On September 14, Pope Benedict XVI authorized the granting of a plenary, or full, indulgence in order to highlight the Year of Faith. A plenary indulgence is a remission of the temporal punishment a person is due for sins that have been forgiven. The requirements to receive the indulgence include going to confession, receiving the Eucharist and praying for the intentions of the pope. The Catholic faithful in any local church can obtain the indulgence by attending three sermons at parish missions or three lectures on Vatican II or the catechism; attending Mass or the Liturgy of the Hours on days designated by the local bishop for the Year of Faith; or visiting the place where they were baptized to renew their baptismal vows. Attendance at three of the parish presentations listed on the right column qualify for the indulgence. Your first op-portunity is Monday, November 5.

Featured CD for November

“The Year of Faith” by

Dr. Michael Barber

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council and the 20th anniversary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Pope Benedict XVI has announced a Year of Faith to help Catholics revital-ize their faith, to rediscover the splendor and beauty of the faith, and to inspire us to commit to the New Evangelization. In this talk, Dr. Mi-chael Barber explains how the Catechism and Sacred Scripture can reignite the fire of our faith.

Please remember a $3 donation per CD is suggested to allow the parish to continue the program

and offer new material.

Our Server Albs Need Caretakers We seek a few persons who have a washer and dryer, some time on their hands, and a willing spirit. Our altar server albs take as much beating as play clothes and require laundering on a regular basis. Are you a stickler for clean collars? Then you’re the person for this minis-try! The albs need to be cared for on a monthly basis, but only a few of them need to be laundered at a time. We are happy to have several persons cover the responsibility. The albs are poly/cotton blend and usually need no ironing. Contact Rita Gunther at [email protected].

Senior Club St. Mary’s Senior Club Meeting will be at noon in the Church Meeting Rooms on Monday, Novem-ber 12, 2012. If you will have any questions, please contact Pat Morelli at 847-543-4244.

Newspaper Recycling Bin Raises Money for St. Mary School The big yellow and green bin at the back of the school parking lot is a drop-off location for news-paper, mail, magazines, catalogs and other scrap paper. Many St. Mary families recycle there every week already. Joining our recycling effort pays great benefits for our school.

PAPER DRIVE This November we are having a Paper & Newspaper Recycling Drive! This is important because we earn money for every 2000 pounds of paper collected. We usually collect 1-2 tons every month. Please help us reach our goal of 4 tons this November! Thank you from the St. Mary School Green Team, students and staff
