PREFACE

The present publication, International Whaling Statistics No. LVII,comprises the whaling operations in the Antarctic during the season 1964-65and on grounds outside the Antarctic in the calendar year 1965.

Statistical data are lacking from"Macaya Hermanos y Cia.", Chile.

Further, statistical data relating to the sex and size of the whaleskilled have not been received from

"Industria Ballenera S.A.", Spain, and fromone company operating from Peru.

With these exceptions the statistics, to the best knowledge of theCommittee, include all operations carried on in 1965.

INTRODUCTION

This publication comprises the world aggregate whaling results for1965, i.e. the catch in the Antarctic during the season 1964-65 and thecatch on grounds outside the Antarctic during the calendar year 1965.Details respecting the Antarctic catch were given in International WhalingStatistics No. LVI, while the present volume gives specifications of theoperations on grounds outside the Antarctic in 1965.

In 1965 the following alterations took place in respect to the parti-cipation in the operations outside the Antarctic, as compared with theseason 1964:

U.S.S.R. was not opera ting from shore stations on the Kuril Islands'The Kyokuyo Hogei Co., Ltd. was not operating from shore stations

on the coast of Japan. No whaling was carried on from New Zealand. From Peru only one shore station was in operation as against three

during the previous seasons. On Nova Scotia a whaling company named Comeau Sea Foods Ltd.

commenced whaling in 1965.It should also be mentioned that 10 of the Antarctic floating factories

on their voyages to and from the Antarctic whaling grounds, in 1965caught 2,219 sperm-whales in the South Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean andSouth Pacific Ocean.

In 1965 whaling outside the Antarctic was carried on from the followinggrounds :

Africa: Natal and Cape Province.North Atlantic and Arctic: Azores, Madeira, Spain, Norway, Faroe

Islands, Iceland, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia.Pacific North: California, Oregon, British Columbia, North Pacific

Ocean and Bering Sea, Kamtchatka and Japan.Other grounds: Brazil, Peru, Chile, Australia, South Atlantic Ocean,

Indian Ocean and South Pacific Ocean.

These whaling grounds are the same as those operated in the previousyear, with the exception of Kuril Islands and New Zealand.

From table a, page 13, it will be seen that whaling on grounds out-side the Antarctic during the year 1965 was carried on from 27 shorestations and 7 floating factories. In addition comes one Chilean shorestation from which no information has been received, i.e. there were9 shore stations less but the same number of floating factories as in1964

In order to show how the catch on grounds outside the Antarctichas developed in recent years we give the following table, showing thenumber of whales killed during the period 1951/52-1964/65. Figures forthe Antarctic whaling are also included in order to give the total worldwhaling results during this period.

From this table will be seen that the total catch of whales, in theAntarctic and on grounds outside the Antarctic, increased considerably upto and including the season 1961-62. The total number of whales killedreached a maximum of about 66,000 in 1961-62, but in the following sea-sons it has been 63,000 to 65,000. The increase in the total catch in lateryears is principally a result of the large catch of sperm-whales outside theAntarctic. Since the 1952-season this sperm-whale catch has increasedfrom 6,100 animals to about 23,000 both in 1963 and 1964, while thebaleen whale catch outside Antarctic in the same period only increasedfrom 8,500 to 10,500.

The decrease in the total number of whales killed in 1962-63 and1963-64 must be ascribed to the strongly reduced baleen whale catch inthe Antarctic during these two seasons.

For the purpose of giving more detailed information on thereduced baleen whale catch in the Antarctic and the increased baleenwhale catch on grounds outside Antarctic during the last 4 seasons, wedraw attention to the survey below, which gives the number of the baleenwhales killed, by species. For comparison, the corresponding figures forsome earlier seasons are also included.

1) Unspecified baleen whales, included in the figures for the baleen whale catch in thetable on page 8.

For the Antarctic grounds this survey shows how the catch of themost valuable species of the baleen whales, the blue- and fin-whales andalso the humpbacks, during the 4 latest seasons has been strongly reduced, while the catch of the least valuable baleen whale, the sei-whale, hasbecome very important. In 1964-65 this sei-whale catch increased to20,380 animals, from 8,695 in 1963-64 and 5,503 in 1962-63. It must bementioned, however, that the blue-whales in 1963-64 and 1964-65 weregiven total protection in the Antarctic, except in the waters north of 55°South and between 0° and 80° East. Further it was forbidden to killhumpback-whales in 1963-64 and 1964-65. Otherwise, the whaling periodsfor blue-whales and for the other baleen whales in the pelagic whalingwere unchanged during the 4 last seasons. The total number of baleen

whales killed in the Antarctic was reduced from 36,325 in 1960-61 to28,211 in 1964-65, or with 22 per cent.

On the grounds outside the Antarctic, the catch of fin-whalesand especially of sei-whales increased considerably during the last4 seasons. The blue-whale catch was quite considerable in 1963 and 1965,while the humpback catch failed strongly in 1964 and 1965. The totalnumber of baleen whales killed on these grounds, thus increased from 8,077in 1961 to 10,624 in 1965, or with 32 per cent.

From the following survey, where the number of the various speciesof the baleen whales killed are converted into blue -whale units, it will beseen that the total baleen whale catch in the Antarctic during the 4 lastseasons decreased from 17,261 blue-whale units in 1960-61 to 7,323 blue-whale units in 1964-65, or with 58 per cent. On the grounds outside theAntarctic, however, the total baleen whale catch in blue -whale unitsincreased from 3,054 units in 1961 to 3,873 units in 1965, or with 27 per cent.

The baleen whale catch converted into blue-whale units))

i) The baleen whales are reduced to blue-whale units on the following basis: 1 blue-whale = 2 fin-whales 2 1/2 humpbacks = 6 sei-whales.

In tables pages 24 to 31, particulars are given for a series ofyears in respect to the catch results on the individual grounds outsidethe Antarctic.

Table page 32, shows the production of by-products in the Antarcticand on the grounds outside the Antarctic during the last two seasons.

The chief by-products are whale meat and whale meal, of whichthe total production in 1964-65 were 236,818 tons and 75,334 tons, re-spectively. Of these quanta 171,662 tons whale meat and 33,678 tonswhale meal were produced in the Antarctic.

In some tables Z2-9, pages 33-38, is recorded the catch of small whalesOn the various grounds outside the Antarctic and also in the Antarcticduring the last 5 seasons.
