GPRS

• GPRS: General Packet Radio Service

• GPRS is a service that provides packet mode transmission within the GSM network & interconnects with external packet data networks.

What is GPRS?

• 2.5 G

• GPRS is an overlay network over the GSM

• Very Little change to GSM infrastructure

• Provides Data Packet delivery service

• Standardized by ETSI

• Direct support for Data Network

Features

• High Data Rates of about 100 kbps – an order of magnitude higher than GSM

• The setup time is negligible – less than a second

• Resource utilization as per requirements – air interface is assigned temporarily on per-packet basis

• Hosts can remain “always on”

May 2004GPRS Capacity Evaluation

GPRS Additions (Cont.)

• SGSN – Serving GPRS support Node.– Performs packet routing & transfer

– Mobility management – attach/detach & location management

– Logical Link Management

– AAA

– Stores user Profiles of all MS within its purview

GPRS Additions (Cont.)

• GGSN – Gateway GPRS support Node– Interface between GPRS backbone & External packet data networks

– Converts GPRS packets into appropriate Packet Data Protocol & vice-versa

– It may also perform AAA

• Many-2-Many relationship may exist between SGSN & GGSN

Project Title

• GPRS Capacity Evaluation

• Goal: Simulate the capacity needed for GPRS in coexistence with the circuit switched services.

• Reference Paper: – Peter Stuckmann, Frank Muller, “GPRS Radio Network Capacity and

Quality of Service using Fixed and On-Demand Channel Allocation Techniques”, IEEE 2000.

• Tool: Microsoft .NET C#
