What Code Looks LikeA computer program looks like a list of instructions. A computer programmer breaks up a job into smaller steps that the computer can follow. The computer then reads every line of the program one by one. It’s like the computer is reading a recipe book!

CODE the instructions for a computer program
CODING the writing of instructions for computers
COMPUTER PROGRAM the finished set of instructions for the computer to follow
COMPUTER PROGRAMMER a person who writes the code for the computer program

Did you know that the cool things you
can do on your computer, smartphone,
video game console or tablet were
created by a person using a skill called
coding? Read on to find out more!
Computer ProgramsComputers do not think for themselves. They need computer programs to tell them what to do. Writing computer programs is called “coding.” Did Super Mario hit a brick? Computer code got him to do that! Is Steve from Minecraft building a castle? Computer code is responsible for that, too. Your little brother running off with your comic book? Unless your brother is a robot, computer code wasn’t behind that action. Sorry!
Computer programs, called software, are the fun and useful things you
can do with the hardware: games, apps, streaming videos, surfing the web.
Computers, called hardware, are the
devices that you can touch: smartphones, tablets, video game consoles or laptops.

Clockwise from top left: Madison, Ashlyn, Sophie and Ruby study their code on screen together as a group.
Ashlyn brings her ideas to life on Scratch.
I like coding because I can be
creative in coming up with my own
games, and it is very fun.

Coding ExpertShirin Merchant is a computer programmer and the founder of Code-It Hacks. We asked her some questions about coding. chickaDEE: What is a good age to start coding?Shirin: At Code-It Hacks, we have programs that start for kids in grade 3. But you can start on your own as early as kindergarten. There are so many gadgets out there aimed towards kids, like Bee-Bots.
chickaDEE: Why do you use Scratch in your class?Shirin: It is block-based (the blocks represent script) so you can drag and drop codes. Kids can tap into the online community and be inspired by other people’s projects.

Get Coding! If you can code, you can create digital apps, games, websites, robots and even rockets that go into space. Coding is really just a tool that you use to make ideas come to life. Join coding clubs or take out coding books from the library. Go ahead, get creative ... and code!
It’s used by millions of
kids around the world.
Programming LanguagesJust like you understand English, computers understand special programming languages. Scratch and Python are popular programs kids use to write code. Experts think that since computers are so important, everyone should know how to code.
