CoDEStorm are very aware of our Corporate Social Responsibility and look at sustainability as 3 pillars:
•Social
•Economical
•Environmental
Sustainability

Social:-
We work with local schools/colleges and charities to provide work experience & work placements to people of all ages including:
- Students who wish to learn and progress in particular areas- Long-term unemployed and people with learning disabilities wanting to gain experience.
• Investments in additional training that will benefit staff both at work and in their personal lives such as English courses for non English speakers
• CoDEStorm is a proud sponsor of the Royal Navy Rugby Union which has a big presence in the local area
• We work with a local charity diverting materials from landfill to donate to schools & playgroups for arts & crafts materials which in turn allows them to utilise their budget in more beneficial areas
• We have numerous charities as clients and where possible support their work and minimise the cost of our services. We support staff in charity events and fundraising activities holding various ‘dress-up’ (rather than dress-down) days throughout the year
Sustainability

Economical:-
• Our staff base has increased year on year with an increase of 38% in the last 5 years
• We employ staff from the local area – 84% of staff live within 10 miles
• We use local companies who hold the same ethics as we do wherever possible
Sustainability

Environmental:-
• Working towards achieving ISO 14001
• We set Company Objectives based on our key environmental aspects. In 2009 we surpassed our objectives and achieved:
- Reduction in waste to landfill of 113.4 tonnes – just under 40% reduction !- Reduction in electricity use of by just under 7% per employee ! • Our objectives for 2011:
- To reduce waste to landfill by 10%- To reduce electricity use by 2% per employee

The SEEDA project ‘Energy Grant 500’ offers Small to Medium Sized Businesses, that spend between £1,500 and £30,000 per annum on Energy (Electricity + Gas + Oil), the opportunity to apply for up to £500 grant funding for energy efficiency projects.
The main focus is on heating & ventilation systems, lighting, office equipment and building fabric.

Hendesigns assessed & provided a full lighting survey of our site and a proposal of improvements.
The report provided to us showed all areas of improvement:
And laid out clearly how much energy could be saved, and the payback period after which cost savings would be seen:

There was one area that stood out as having, by far the most potential energy (and therefore cost) savings.
This trial area would cost £1144.80 to convert, and lead to an energy saving of over 3000 kWh per year, and a cost saving of nearly £300 per year.

Starter pack included:
• Loan of a wireless energy monitor (to help identify where savings could be made through cutting energy usage)
• Walk around survey to help identify energy saving opportunities within your business
• Carbon Trust sticker & information pack to help inform and motivate staff to ‘switch off’

After submitting our application we received notification that the grant had been approved just a few weeks later.
Within a week the initial work was completed.
Hendesigns provided us with an invoice for the work immediately, a copy of which we forwarded to Business Link. The grant was paid to us directly and the money was with us before our supplier invoice was due for payment meaning that there was no effect to our cashflow.

Hendesigns also made a number of further recommendations, such as adding reflectors to some of the light fittings, which would enable us to ‘de-populate’ having fewer bulbs leading to further energy & cost savings.
• De-population of this area lead to further energy savings of 1081 kWh per year and cost savings of almost £90 per year.
• We are continuing to convert further areas of the site as and when appropriate.
• New proposal for warehouse lighting conversion will lead to an energy saving of over 16,000 kWh’s per year and a cost saving of over £1,000 per year. It is possible that we would be eligible for a Carbon Trust loan to cover the cost of this which is something that we are investigating currently.
