Codes are systems of signs which create a meaning. Codes can be placed into two groups which are technical and symbolic. A technical code is the way the camera is used to recreate the story in a media text. A symbolic code is what is shown underneath the surface of what we are viewing. Conventions: The widely recognised way of doing something. Codes and convention of the vampire genre: Blood Blood is one the most important elements in vampire films. The reason why blood is important in vampire films is because that’s the only way vampires can survive. The amount of blood used in film can affect the age certificate of the film. The target audience of our opening sequence was teenagers therefore we choose not to use too much blood or gore. We wanted to capture this by only flashing a small amount of the bite scene a t the start of the sequence. Example of films that show a huge amount of blood and gore will be blade and let the right o ne in. the age certificate for these films will be higher in comparison to films like twilight were the audience don’t witness a huge amount of blood spraying from the victim. Vampire's Appearance Another key element would be the appearance of the vampire itself. The pale skin shows that they are dead therefore making than fearful and inhuman. This helps the audience to identify than easily as vampires. The style of clothing always reflects the time period in which the vampire might turn into a vampire. An example of films like this would be .the colour black has a connotation of devilish things therefore representing the vampire genre easily. Films such as twilight go against this rule by dressing the vampire in a modern clothe wearer. For our opening sequence we decided to challenge this ideal by having our vampire in modern style clothes. We also decide not to put make up on the vampire to make him look pale because we felt like this wouldn’t work for our vampi re who is black. Teeth/Fangs The fangs are equally important as the blood element but as costume aspect. The fangs is what makes the film a vampire since it’s the only distinguished feature that va mpire have to drain the blood out of their victims to survive. Without the fangs the audience wouldn’t identify the film with the vampire sub-genre. For our opening sequence we choose to follow this rule to help make it easy for the audience to identify our sequence with the vampire genre. By challenge the other key feature that make a film a vampire genre we needed to have the fangs to recreate the balance in the sequence. When filming we experience a problem with the fangs we choose to buy because it was difficulty to get the fangs to stick to the teeth. Settings The settings for vampire film tend to be at night time due to the belief that they might burn in sunlight. This also helps to add a more fearful atmosphere for the film. Due to the fac t that vampires are supernatural creatures they distinguished tend to hide in the shadows cause the fear to build up. For my opening sequence we choose to film during day light because of the lack of quality of the camera we were using. Filming at night has a lot of challenges such as the ideal of the image not being clear. To help solve this problem we choose to film in the morning because the amount of lighting at that time is smaller therefor still creating the idea that the sequence is film at night.by bintu
