Welcome to Second Meadow Good afternoon and welcome to Second Meadow. Today we extend a warm welcome to the

players, officials and supporters of COCKFOSTERS FC for this Spartan South Midlands

League Premier Division fixture. We also welcome our three match officials and hope that you

all enjoy your short stay with us.

Tuesday night’s fundraising event ,which raised over £600.00 for Hitchin Town’s “Save Top

Field” Campaign, was a resounding success with almost 200 spectators in attendance on a

bitterly cold February night. I received the following email fro Hitchin Town’s secretary the next

day.

“On behalf of everyone at HTFC can I thank you for Tuesday night. You could not have made us more welcome and we were all impressed by your set up and facilities. The special guests were very approachable and they really helped to publicise our campaign. Many thanks for raising such a good sum and it is really appreciated. Good luck for the rest of the season and I am sure our clubs will remain on the best of terms going forward.” I am very grateful to the team of match day helpers that worked tirelessly on the night – too

many to mention here – but we all deserve a big pat on the back for making the night a great

success. The club has certainly hit the headlines in the past few weeks!! All good I’m glad to

say.

Back to today and our visitors have had a bumpy ride since the departure of Mick Roche and

his management team who coincidently announced their resignation on the night we played out

a 1-1 draw with our visitors. But in the past two League outings they have gained four points

with a 2-0 win over Hoddesdon Town and a 0-0 draw against London Colney. Cockfosters are

currently sitting in 15th place.

Our next fixture is a trip to in-form AFC Dunstable next Saturday (Kick Off 3pm) followed by a

short journey to AFC Kempston Rovers in the semi final of the North Beds Charity Cup on

Tuesday night (24th February). (Kick Off 7.45pm)

The Development Side are without a game today but travel to North Greenford United next

Saturday.

Let’s hope for an enjoyable and exciting game this afternoon.

Tracey James – Secretary and Programme Editor

CURRENT LEAGUE TABLE THE HISTORY OF BIGGLESWADE UNITED (2)

The next eleven years saw the first team led by Steve "Snowy" Wright and under his management the club continued to enjoy a very high level of League and Cup success ultimately achieving promotion to the Molten Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division and with it the opportunity to compete in the FA Cup. And under Snowy the club made three Beds FA Senior Challenge Cup final appearances, winning two of the three with victories over Stotfold (4-1) and Leighton Town (1-0) but missed out in 2006/07 going down 2-0 to Dunstable Town. Snowy's other cup successes came in the form of the Hunts Premeir Cup, North Beds Charity Cup, Hinchingbrooke Cup, the SML Division One Cup and the SML Special Achievement Award once again. The end of the 2006 2007 season saw Snowy step down as manager with his assistant, Nick Burton taking over the first team reins. The 2006 2007 season marked a crucial time in the club's history with the formation of a youth structure that sees Biggleswade girls and boys aged 7 to 18 able to be part of Biggleswade United. We now have twelve youth teams including three girls teams with a well established youth committee. The profile of the club as a community club is very much boosted by the association with such a well organised and well structured youth set up. January 5th 2009 saw the club embark on further ambitious ground improvements. With financial backing from Biggleswade Town Council, Mid Beds District Council and the Football Foundation we installed a 260-seater stand, fully enclosed the ground with a double turnstile entrance and players' secure walkway which raised the ground to Grade E status. After several years of stability in terms of first team managers the next six years saw a regular turnover of first team and reserve team managers with Nick Burton, Dave Elkin and Phil Childs all taking over the first team reins for a time. At the start of the 2013 2014 season we appointed Mick Reardon and Mark Royal as first team managers both of whom have enjoyed success as coaches at the higher levels of football. Their disciplined approach was quickly adhered to and responded to by the players. The new 2014 – 2015 season has seen the arrival of several new young players to the club following the club’s positive decision to introduce a side that will compete in the Suburban League as well as continuing to compete in the SML Premier Division. The Suburban side will be managed by Gary Burkett who enjoyed success with Shefford Saints Under 18s and many talented young players will be part of the United Squad. Gary will be assisted by former Bushey Met Police manager, Tony Jones. In November 2014 the club took a further positive step to realise our ambitions with the appointment of Sky Sports Presenter and renowned author, Guillem Balague as Biggleswade United’s Director of Football. The club has certainly come a long way in relatively few years but we could not have done it without the help of a very supportive Town and District Council who clearly understand the benefits of having a community based club in Biggleswade. Our success is also very much down to a very hard working committee who throughout the year - not just the football season - continue to volunteer their time and commitment to the club, to help it continue to thrive and be a source of enjoyment for our supporters and the Biggleswade community.

BIGGLESWADE UNITED : OUR HISTORY SO FAR

Biggleswade United Football Club was re- formed on the 16th July 1959. However, local history records indicate that there was a Biggleswade United side playing at Second Meadow as early as 1929. Our first season (1959/60) saw us competing in Division Three of the North Herts. League (NHL). After 10 successful years in the NHL the club made the step up to South Midlands League (SML) football. But towards the end of a 15-year association with the SML the club began to struggle and after three years of finishing in the bottom three of Division One we sought fresh fields. The club joined the Herts. Senior but club continued to find the going tough. In 1986 we elected to return to local League football, joining the Bedford and District Football League and began to build again. The appointment of Brian Swords as first team manager in 87/88 proved to be the turning point in the club's fortunes. During the next ten years the club achieved a tremendous amount of success on and off the football pitch. Our record of League and Cup honours speak for themselves but aligned to this a great deal of work went on behind the scenes to match the on-field success. The club now boasts one of the best clubhouse and ground facilities in the Mid-Bedfordshire area. The success of the club has also attracted many new players as well as commanding a great deal of loyalty from those players who helped the club progress from Division Three of the Bedford and District League to County Senior Club status in just 15 years. The 1995/96 season was the most successful in the club's history - winning five major honours; the Beds Intermediate County Cup, Bedford and District League Championship, League Cup Championship and as the League's representatives the club won the Beds. FA Centenary Cup. Having won every major Bedford League honour the club felt it was time to move on and made the decision to make the step up once again and returned to Division One of the SML. In an exceptionally successful first season we celebrated a Division One "double" by winning the Championship and the Division One Cup. We also retained the Beds. FA Intermediate County Cup, only the second club in the competition's history to achieve this feat. To crown our success the club were awarded the SML Special Achievement Trophy in July 1997. In the season 1997/98 we finally achieved Senior status. This was achieved not only through the endeavours of the players on the field but ultimately as a result of an extremely hard working committee. With the help of the Biggleswade Town Council a new stand was erected and perimeter fencing installed. And two seasons later the club erected floodlights and on the evening of 26th October 1999 we played our first-ever floodlit game at Second Meadow, Ryman League side Leighton Town were the visitors in the Bedfordshire Premier Cup.

BIGGLESWADE UNITED 2 HADLEY 1 COCKFOSTERS – THE HISTORY BEHIND THE CLUB

United returned to winning ways with this 2-1 home win over Hertfordshire side

Hadley at Second Meadow on Saturday and leapfrogged their opponents to move into

tenth spot.

Tom Cookman opened the scoring in the 16th minute

for the hosts. Sam Nair’s strike was parried away

by Hadley keeper Charlie Mann but Cookman was

quick to pounce on the loose ball and from the

narrowest of angles he thumped the ball into the

top of the net for 1-0.

Mick Reardon’s side extended their lead in the

26th minute. A superb advantage decision saw play

continue despite a crunching tackle on Jack Boyd.

Cookman and Nair combined well with the ball

eventually landing at Reynaldo Carbon’s boot and

the striker dispatched the ball past Mann for 2-0.

The final 15 minutes of the half saw Hadley press and the visitors were unlucky not to

reduce the deficit before the break when striker Dom Petrucci was denied by an

excellent save from United’s keeper, Grant Beckwith. But their best chance to make it

2-1 at the interval was squandered by Laste Dembaxe when he blasted over from 6

yards out.

As was to be expected the second period opened with Hadley pushing United back

into their own half and having added to their fire power through substitutes Shay

Khosrowsharhi and Ivan Machedo they began bossing the game. However, they had

to wait until the 73rd minute to find the net when Machedo volleyed home from a

corner.

Six minutes later the visitors had the opportunity to make it 2-2 when United’s Adam

Randall tripped Machedo near the bye line and the referee immediately pointed to the

spot. After some disagreement in the Hadley ranks as to who should take the honours

it was left to a now increased under-pressure Petrucci to fire home the equaliser. But

it was United’s Beckwith who turned hero for the day blocking Petrucci’s penalty strike

to maintain United’s lead.

Having failed to get themselves back into the game, Hadley began to tire and United

pressed for a third. And the United supporters thought goal number three was a

certainty when Nair was presented with a golden chance in the final minute but his

strike was cleared from the line by Hadley’s Martin Flannery.

THE EARLY DAYS The Club was originally formed in 1921 by local residents and the ground was allocated to the Club by Lady Bevan, from her family Estate. The first league entered was the local Barnet League and moderate success was enjoyed as the Club moved through the lower divisions. The 1930’s saw the original club joined by the successful Cockfosters Juniors and the ‘new’ Club joined the stronger Wood Green League. Promotion was again achieved through the lower divisions, culminating in season 1938-9 with the first of two ‘trebles’ won in the Club’s history, winning the Wood Green League’s Premier Division, the League Cup and the Barnet Cup. After the war the Club moved it’s two sides into the Northern Suburban Intermediate League, a very strong local league of that time. Season 1946-7 saw the Club finish as runner-up in the League’s First Division and promotion into the Premier Division. The next season saw relegation but in season 1949-50 the First Division title came to Chalk Lane and in the very next season the runners-up spot in the Premier Division. The late 1940’s also saw success in a number of local cup competitions but for most of the 1950’s the Club struggled with no honours coming its way. The start of the 1960’s saw a re-awaking of the Club and the Northern Suburban League’s First Division title again came to Chalk Lane, with the Premier Division Championship following in the very next campaign. The Barnet Cup and the Barnet Charity Cup finals were reached regularly with both trophies being won on a couple of occasions. MORE RECENT TIMES… In the October of the 2011-12 campaign Mark Adams resigned due to family commitments. Vince Purdue and then Don Bennett had periods in charge of the First Team, but by mid-March 2012 both left due to personal commitments, and the Club promoted Reserve Team Manager Mick Roche to take over the First Team. Season 2012/13 proved to be successful culminated in taking the Division One Runners-Up spot on goal difference and thereby gaining promotion back to the Premier Division and were finalists in the South Midlands Floodlight Cup, losing to Oxhey Jets. Season 2013/14 saw the Club back in the SSML Premier Division after a gap of four seasons and it proved to be a successful season, finishing our league campaign in eighth position and winning both the league’s Challenge Trophy and the South Midlands Floodlight cup finals. Following our ‘get together’ with Whetstone Wanderers, we now have a strong youth side to the club. In addition to our Under 18 team, who are managed by Paul Boxer assisted by Steve Foot and compete in the Southern Counties Floodlit Youth League, we also have teams competing in prestigious Eastern Junior Alliance League at Under 13, Under 15 and Under 16 age groups. Recently Mick Roche and his management team have moved on to another challenge and we wish them well. Again the Club has promoted former Reserve Team Manager Mark Mezen to take over the First Team reigns.

RESULTS

Hitchin Town’s Save Top Field campaign was further boosted by fellow non league side Biggleswade United who hosted the Save Top Field Cup to raise money to aid the Canaries’ fight to keep their historic Top Field ground. Biggleswade chairman Chris Lewis, who was instrumental in arranging the match said: “Our Director of Football is Sky Sports’ Guillem Balague, who also has close links with Hitchin. “He kindly persuaded colleague Jim White and former Republic of Ireland forward Tony Cascarino to come along to the game. “Jim and Tony were great, absolute gentlemen. They really got into the whole night and were really positive about the Save Hitchin Town campaign, too. “They were happy to chat to fans and were really down to earth. I can’t speak highly enough of them. “They even signed a match ball which managed to raise a further £100 for Hitchin’s cause, which was great.” “We are really pleased Biggleswade United can help the Canaries in some way, and hopefully the entire match receipts we are donating will help towards the Save Top Field campaign. “I can also confirm plans are well under way to arrange a pre-season fixture between our two teams to further cement the great relationship both clubs have.” The face of the Premier League’s transfer deadline day, Sky Sports broadcaster Jim White told the Comet: “I have had a brilliant night. I am right behind the Save Hitchin Town campaign, and you can see how much the club means to so many people. “I had a mad dash to get here from presenting Sky Sports News and it has been incredibly worthwhile. “I have also been impressed by the set up here and wish both clubs all the best. I’ll certainly be keeping an eye out for both clubs. “Now I’ve ticked off visiting Second Meadow I hope to get down to much-loved Top Field at some stage – although as a Scotsman I still won’t be buying a round in Canary Corner!” Guillem Balague, who lives in Hitchin and is a keen supporter of both clubs, added: “It was a great night. “I’d like to say thanks to Jim and Tony for taking time out from their busy schedules to come here and show their support for the Save Hitchin Town campaign. “It was also a tremendous show of solidarity by Biggleswade United to not only host the game but to donate match receipts to the campaign.” Canaries chief executive Andy Melvin added: “It was great to see such well-known names support the cause – our fight goes on.” Two late goals from the Canaries Town sealed a 2-0 away win in an even match in front of

nearly 200 fans, including a sizeable travelling away support from Hitchin.
