A telegram was received last evening announcing that Mrs. E. B. Gage, whose serious illness was announced in these columns yesterday, had died in San Francisco at 3:30 o’clock yesterday afternoon. The news of her illness was a great surprise to her many friends here, and the announcement of her death, following so closely, was a great shock to them. Mrs. Gage has been a resident of the territory, with her husband, for about twenty years, having resided at Tombstone, Tucson and Prescott and as a consequence, was one of the best known women in Arizona. She was possessed of a sunny and cheerful disposition, hence was popular with all who knew her. Without the cares of a family of children, and possessed of ample means, she devoted much of her time to charity and to the work of administering to the happiness and comfort of others. While she left Prescott about two months ago with the intention of residing elsewhere, and her departure was deeply deplored, her friends found comfort in the thought that should would pay occasional visits to the place where she had so long resided, little thinking that the summons from the active scenes of life would be soon be issued. A good woman has been called to her reward. –Prescott Courier. GALAZ, Julia V., born Nov 2, 1914 at El Tigre, Sonora, Mex. Died March 15, 1993 at Vista Hills Hospital, El Paso, Texas. GARLAN, Mrs. William. Victim of Runaway Accident Wednesday Died Last Night. Husband’s Condition is Exceedingly Critical – Is Doubtful Whether He Will Survive. As a result of injuries sustained in the frightful runaway accident in upper Tombstone canyon Wednesday evening, Mrs. William Garland died at her home on Naco road last night about nine o’clock. It was stated by Dr. Hart, the attending physician, that death was due to failure of Mrs. Garland to rally from the terrible shock sustained to her entire system through the violence of her fall to the ground when thrown from the buggy as it overturned in front of the Thomas residence. The spinal cord was particularly effected. Besdies this there were internal injuries sustained along with broken ribs and severe general shaking up that was in itself of gravest character. The injured woman suffered greatly from the first, despite all efforts to alleviate her. Mrs. Garland’s daughter, Mrs. Geo Bennett, who is in New York, has been telegraphed concerning the death of her mother, and word is expected from her this morning. Until this is received no definite arrangements will be decided upon concerning the funeral. Mrs. Garland was about 50 years of age. The condition of Wm. Garland was reported last night to be very critical. The effect of the shock of his wife’s death upon him is certain to operate against his improvement. The physician would not say last night what might be the outcome of today in his case. The greatest danger attends. Upon the first examination of the injured couple it was the opinion that Mr. Garland had sustained by far the more serious injuries and that while Mrs. Garland stood some chance of recovery his chances were exceedingly small. Later and more careful examinations, together with the developments brought with passing of time, convinced the physicians that the condition of Mrs. Garland was the more immediately serious. Since then it has been realized that there was small hope for the recovery of either of the injured, though it has been felt that a favorable turn might occur with either that would enable recovery. Such is now hoped for with Mr. Garland, though, as previously stated, the shock that the death of Mrs. Garland carries to him reduces the chances of such occurrence. His injuries, however, have not had time to fully develop, and may not prove to be of as serious a character as is now indicated. This hope reigns with hundreds of friends, though it must be said that in reality there is small prospect at the present time for its realization. Bisbee Daily Review, Bisbee, AZ. After this Indian attack, the father moved his remaining family to first Grayson and then to Denton County, Texas. It was in Denton County that she met her husband, the late John Gibson who died in 1926. Mrs. Gibson fondly recalled the happy times she and her husband and children had together. She especially enjoyed the covered wagon trip they made from one end of Missouri to another which took a whole year. Many a stream had a tall bridge that cost fifty cents to cross. Mrs. Gibson was an active woman up until the time of her last sickness. She hadn’t been to Benson for seven years back in 1938 when it was necessary for her to come in On Wednesday, August 17, 1938, to make final claim on her government land. The summer rains had swollen the San Pedro River until it was impossible for her son Sam to bring her across in his pickup truck. She agilely climbed on a horse unaided; rode side saddle fashion for over a mile or over the swollen stream and finished the 32 mile trip into town, transacted her business, apparently none the worse for the wear. It was while Mrs. Gibson was milking, one of her favorite chores, that she was kicked six weeks ago. She was put to bed and was never able to get up again. Helping care for her was her granddaughter, Patricia Siebel of Ballenger, Texas. The Gibsons came to New Mexico after they had lived in Missouri, then they moved to Arizona in 1916. In April, 1931, Mrs. Gibson built her house on the government land which wasn’t opened up yet for homesteading but which was later to become her very own. Funeral services were in charge of Rev. U’Renn while Virginia Kennedy sang “Rock of Ages.” Pallbearers were Harold Holcomb, Wiley Morgan, Mark Bradbury, Dan Allen, Benny Baker and Floyd Hightower. Bisbee Daily Review, Bisbee, AZ. Saturday, January 28, 1911. Pg. 8 (Transcribed by Jean Walker). GOODBODY, Frank A. Frank A. Goodbody A California Pioneer Passed Away. Was a California ‘49er, and Followed Life of Prospector in Early Days. After a long and eventful life, during which he commanded the respect of all with whom he came in contact, Frank A. Goodbody, a California pioneer, and a man of marked ability, died of old at his residence on Clawson Hill. Frank A. Goodbody was born at Windsor, in the province of Ontario, Canada, very nearly eighty years ago. When he was seventeen years of age he struck out for himself and went to Cook County, Illinois. This was in 1844, and he stayed in Illinois until the god fever which swept over the country in ’49, lured him to California. Early in the year 1850, young Goodbody arrived at Placerville, Yuba County, California, and started out as a prospector. Like all of the old-time prospectors he had varying fortune. Several times he located claims . . .(unreadable word) would have made him immense fortunes if he had held on, but in those days quick returns were more alluring than doubtful wealth, and claims which afterwards yielded millions were sold for a few thousand dollars. Frank Goodbody was the original locator of the famous “Whiskey Diggins” property, which became famous throughout the country on account of the wealth which it yielded. When Goodbody reached California, that state did not have the imposing judicial department which it has at the present times, so in those days the members of the camp elected the youngest miner among them “Judge Lynch.” Goodbody was the youngest, and he was not yet twenty-one years of age when his associates elected him to the office, which was the most important to their community. “Judge Lynch” had jurisdiction in all cases civil or criminal, and there was no appeal from his decision. Court was held every Sunday morning, and the culprits were arraigned with all of the solemnity which now characterizes the highest court in the land. In those days there were desperate characters to be dealt with, and swift justice was important. So conscientious did young Goodbody fill the office, and with such manifest impartiality, that he was re-elected several times. In 1854 he went back to Illinois and in 1865 married the wife who survives him. In 1879 he went to Texas where he engaged in business as a railroad contractor, and in 1887 moved to California, where he carried on his contracting business until a few years ago, when he retired and came

He has been unable to be around for nearly two years, and his death has been expected at almost any time, on account of his weakened condition. He finally passed away yesterday morning. Mr. Goodbody is survived by his wife and seven children. Mrs. Goodbody and daughters, Mrs. W. H. Brophy, Mrs. M. J. Cunningham, and Miss Theresa Goodbody are all residents of Bisbee. Probate Judge Frank Goodbody is a son of the deceased, and the other three children, Richard, M.D. and Thomas H. are residents of San Diego, California. The funeral services will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church this morning at 7:30 o’clock. The body will be sent on the 8:50 train to San Diego, where the interment will take place. Probate Judge Frank Goodbody will accompany the body to its last resting place. Bisbee Daily Review, Bisbee, AZ. Wednesday, August 8, 1906. Pg. 8. (Transcribed by Jean Walker). GOODMAN, Clara. Abandoned Stope Falls Several Sets. Victim Was Prepared to Leave Shortly to Visit Children. Coroner’s Jury Exonerates Company From Blame. His plans all made to visit his two little motherless children in Texas within the next few weeks, death came unexpectedly Sunday afternoon about 3:30 o’clock to William Grossklaus, who was crushed to death beneath 100 tons of ore and dirt on the 300-foot level in the Czar shaft. Grossklaus, with George McMillan and Harry Palmer, were just preparing to leave the mine, having completed their shift, when several sets of timbers in an old and little used stope gave way under them. That all three were not killed is due to kind fortunate’s helping hand to Palmer and McMillan. When the crash came Grossklaus was carried down beneath his companions by the earth and rock that fell from above. Palmer went down next, being partially covered, while McMillan held to the rail of a track on which they were standing and escaped being carried down. When help was summoned McMillan was found on top. A rope was placed under the arms of Palmer and he was withdrawn from his dangerous position, in which he sustained several severe bruises but nothing of a serious nature. According to stories told of the accident, Grossklaus was not killed by the first cave, but when the rescuers first reached him was able to speak, crying out that he could see their light. They then went to work to dig him out. When the greater part of the dirt had been removed and the accident victim reached he was still alive but said he was smothering and to protect him as much as possible planks were placed over his uncovered face. Before more could be done the second cave came, completely covering the victim and probably ending his sufferings, mangling his body in a horrible manner. When finaly [sic] found his head

Cochise County AZGenWeb © 2018 - All rights reserved was crushed in, his body torn and bruised and several bones broken. By working from underneath, Grossklaus was reached about two hours after the accident happened at about 3 o’clock. He was then dead and was taken to an undertaking establishment. It is said that Grossklaus recently resigned a position at the Lowell shaft for the reason that he could not get Sunday work. It was working on Sunday that brought him his tragic death. His desire for as much work as possible is due to the fact that the recent death of his wife put him to considerable expense. She died and was buried in this city about six months ago. At the inquest, held last night at Judge Owen Murphy’s courtroom, a number of witnesses were examined, and the testimony all went to show that it was one of those unavoidable accidents that occur from time to time in underground workings. Several of the witnesses examined stated that the precautions taken to avoid such accidents were superior to those in other mines: that they knew of nothing that could have been done to have lessened the danger. The deceased was a native of Germany and aged about 39. He has a brother-in-law, A. T. Rose, who is employed by the Bisbee-Naco Water company here. He has also a brother living at Custer City, S. D., two sisters living in New York. He has two children living at Valley Mills, Bosque county, Texas. His parents are both alive and living in Germany. The jury’s verdict was to the effect that the deceased came to his death through an unavoidable accident caused by the giving away of timbers and falling earth, and attached no blame to the company. The members of the jury were Harry Hanscomb, Wm. Fahey, E. B. Miller, J. J. McCrea and J. C. Leroy. Bisbee Daily Review, Bisbee, AZ. Tuesday, April 10, 1906. Pg. 5 (Transcribed by Jean Walker).
