EARLYILLE. Mrs. Rudolpb Wendling died Sun­

day morning at ber home southeast of town after a short illness of pneu­monia. At this writing no funeral ar­rangements have been made A com­plete obituary will be given next week.

The Children's Day exercises at the M. E. and Congregational churches were nicely rendered by those taking part. The churches had been suitably decorated for the occasion and were filled with large audiences and liberal collections were taken.

Miss Ivy Hunt was a Cedar Falls visitor the past week.

Miss Ruth Johnson was hostess to the members of the young ladles' so­ciety of the Congregational church at her home Monday.

Mrs. Grace Lynch entertained as her guest Tuesday, Miss Anna Still-well, of Waukon.

Mrs. Alice Meythaler spent Saturn day at the parental home in Inde­pendence.

Mesdame3 Will Hunt and Mary Bining were Waterloo visitors Wed­nesday.

Alhert Clemens and wife mourn the death of their eleven-day-old baby son who died Thursday and was buried Friday morning from St. Joseph's Catholic church. Father Dunkel had charge.

Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Ede of Boise. Idaho, have arrived for a visit of sev­eral weeks at the home of his mother, Mrs. Jane Ede, who is not in the best of health.

Orly Loom is and family of Epworth, have moved to town nd are occupy­ing the P. L. Haas residence. Mr. Loom is has accepted the job as jani­tor of the Earlville consolidated schools and Is already onto l^is job taking care of the school grounds.

Will Bush, who has been employed at the F. Werkmeister undertaking parlors for the past few months, de­parted Saturday for Des Moines to accept a similar position.

A large meeting was held in the Earlville opera house Tuesday after­noon, when Mrs. Bertha Lister of Manchester, addressed the women in the interest of the Red Cross chapter, a county organization with head­quarters at Manchester. The chapter here is in charge of Hon. S. W. George Bock was a business visitor in Dubuque Friday.

A rousing patriotic meeting was held in the opera house last Tues­day evening and was one of the larg­est attended meetings ever held here this season. The meeting was ad­dressed by Rev. Father Dunkel of Dy-ersville and Hon. A. M. Cloud of Man­chester. Rev. Mr. Dunkel's was a masterly effort, full of the spirit *f patriotism and in a clear and distinct voice told the people the great need of loyalty in time of war. Mr. Cloud, always a favorite with an Earlville audience, dwelt largely upon the Lib­erty Loan Bond and the work of the Red Cross, and urged his hearer'B to respond promptly to both calls. It was a very enthusiastic meeting from start to finish.

About twenty-five from here were in attendance at the eighth grade picnic and program at the U. S. Fish hatchery Friday afternoon.

The annual picnic of the Ridgeville grange will be held in the park at Al-moral Wednesday, June 13th. Every­body is invited to bring a basket and enjoy a day's outing.

J. A. Miller and family were Mon-ticello visitor Sunday and Monday.

Rural Mail Carrier Sam McAreavy who has been taking a vacation for a few days, surprised his friends by getting married to a young lady at Ryan. We have not learned wheth­er he intends to make Earlville his home, but the best wishes of his friends are extended.

Mrs. Harrison Ellsworth and two sons of Britt, have returned to their home after a short visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Stumpf.

Henry Bergman received word of the sudden death of the wife of his brother, Charles, in Washington, last Sunday. ' She leaves five children, the youngest of which is a babe,two weeks old. The family formerly re­sided near Colesburg until about four years ago, when they moved to Wash­ington to engage in fruit raising. Before her marriage she was Miss Shwantes of near Colesburg.

Carl Laxson was at Clarinda last week to attend the commencement exercises of the public school of that city. His sister, Miss Grace Laxson, a teacher in the school, accompanied him home.
