Guess I qualify as a crazy cat lady, but not just for my furry four footed friends. Years ago, when my boys were in Cub Scouts, I thought it would be fun to have our yard “certified” as a Monarch butterfly habitat. We promised not to use insecticides, to plant flowers that attracted the butterflies and to put in LOTS of Milk-weed plants for the caterpillars to eat. A couple of weeks ago, after rescuing an entire plant full of “cats” from the wasps, and giving them a safe place to cocoon and hatch out, I had the fun of releasing 9 or-ange and black beauties into my front yard. It’s kind of a summer rit-ual for me, although I’ve never had that many survive before. What a thrill it is to watch them, one by one, find their wings and flutter away above the trees. Unfortunately, due to disease and loss of habitat and food sources, Monarch numbers are rapidly declining. If you’d like to help give these “Texas Treasures” a fighting chance, here’s where to start: 1. Butterflies and their caterpillars are insects, so avoid using bug

sprays around your yard, including fertilizers that contain insecti-cides.

2. Add flowering plants to your garden that attract and provide food for the butterflies.

3. The ONLY plant that Monarch cats eat is Milkweed, so if you plant it, they will come. Make sure to buy your Milkweed at a reputable nursery that doesn’t use bug spray on their plants. Don’t be sur-prised when the cute little yellow & black striped buggers totally strip the plants of all their leaves, and you find yourself running back to the nursery shouting, “I need more Milkweed, my cats are starving!” That’s part of my ritual, too.

4. For more information on raising Monarchs, check out the numerous sources available on line or at the library.

Sometimes, when I’m in the yard, a Monarch will actually flutter up against me. I like to imagine that it’s one of mine coming back to say thanks! So what’s all this have to do with quilting? Ever looked at our guild logo? Yep, that’s a Monarch!

2016/2017 Membership Dues

The new membership renewal forms will be available online by May 4. You may also pick one up at the evening Guild meeting. As a reminder Membership Dues are due by August 31 and late Septem-ber 1, 2016. However, there is a more important reason to pay early. Quilt show entry forms are due by July 21 with quilts turned in by August 18. Entries will not be accepted if the membership dues have not also been paid. So please make it a goal to have paid your dues when you enter your quilts.

Raffle Baskets: We are collecting items for the raffle basket display at the quilt

show. You can coordinate your own basket or your donation will be included with

other items. These need not just be quilting related. Past theme baskets have includ-

ed teas, coffees, wine, cooking, gardening, children, non-perishable foods, and gift

cards. Quilt related baskets have included kits (patterns and fabric), yardage, pre-

cuts, notions, rulers, irons. All donations should be new items. No problem if you

don't have a basket or other container, we have donations for those also and we will

wrap it all up. Please contact Rita Evans or Peggy Johnson if you have something to

donate.

Quilt Appraisals Available for Your Show Quilts and Other Quilts

The Quilt Show Committee would like to remind everyone that you can get your quilts appraised during our upcoming Quilt Show. The cost for each appraisal is $50; our appraiser, Jane Hancock, has gra-ciously contracted with us to donate back to the guild $18 (that’s 36%) of each appraisal. So, it’s a deal for you and it’s a deal for the guild.

If you would like your show quilt appraised, please check the box on the back of the entry form and sub-mit your $50 per quilt with your entry form. The appraiser will come during the judging hours to work on appraisals. If you have other quilts that you would like to have appraised you can bring them to Jane’s booth at the show and pay her directly.

Here is a bio of our appraiser, Jane Hancock. She is a certified Appraiser , Specializing in Quilts and Textiles. She has worked at our previous shows.

“Jane Hancock, quilt and textile appraiser has had an interest in quilting and sewing since childhood. She became a certified appraiser of personal property 19 years ago when she earned her certification by qualifying with the Certified Appraisers’ Guild of St. Louis, Missouri.

During her career, she has appraised some 600 quilts and textile pieces. Her appraising skills are daily honed by her studies of quilt and textile history, their fabrics and designs. She has read hundreds of books on the subject over the past years. Jane has studied under experts in all types of quilting, such as Terry Thompson, Bobbie Aug, Libby Lehman, and Bill Kerr, and others. She continues to update her qualifications by attending classes and workshops at museums and quilt shows.

Jane Hancock hold membership in the Alliance Quilts in Asheville, North Carolina, The American Quilt-ers Society in Paducah, Kentucky and The International Quilters Association in Houston, Texas.

Locally, she belongs to the Coastal Prairie and Tri-County Quilt Guilds.”

Quilt Show News by Barb Wall & Allison Etzler

The next time you’re cruising around the internet, why not go to the guild

website, www.cpqgtx.org, click on “2016 Quilt Show” and check out our cur-

rent list of show vendors? Not only are the business names there, but also a

brief description of what they will have for sale. You’ll notice that there’s a

fantastic variety of merchandise. Some of our favorite vendors are back, plus

we have a number of companies that are doing our show for the first time.

The booth fees vendors pay help fund many of the costs of putting on the

show. We need them, and they need us to support their booths. If a business has a “good”

show, they’re likely to come back, but if they don’t… So, take a look at who’ll be there, then

start making out your shopping list and saving your $$$ now. Just tell your significant other

that the success of the quilt show depends on you!

We are still in need of many volunteers to help both before and during the show. There will

be sign-up sheets at all guild meetings up until the show. Please be generous with your time.

The next meeting of the full show committee will be Saturday, July 16, 10:00 am-12 noon at

the University Branch Library. That’s right before the July 21 entry form deadline.

Some books recently added to our library include: Backyard Bird Quilts by Jodie Davis (18 pa-

per pieced projects), Hop To It! Appliqued Blocks and Projects by Edyta Sitar (12 blocks, 8 pro-

jects, easy applique techniques), Pint-Sized Traditions by Lynette Jensen (19 small quilts), and

Quilts Through the Seasons by Eleanor Burns (a quilt for each month of the year). I’ll bring

these new books to the next couple of meetings. Check them out!!

Just a couple of helpful hints.

To audition grid or template quilting patterns, mark them on a portion of your quilt with a hera (a

Japanese marking tool made of hard plastic). The hera marks by pressure only and can be erased by

simply pressing the marked area with an iron.

When cutting on the bias, place a strip of scotch tape on the fabric and cut down the center of the

tape. Now you have a stabilizer on both pieces. Do not remove until sewn together.

Coastal Prairie Quilt Guild Minutes of the April 5, 2016 Board Meeting

(Approved at May 3, 2016 Board Meeting)

The meeting was called to order by Barbara Wall, President, at 1:30 p.m. at the Keegan’s Woods Commu-nity Building.

Board members in attendance: Barbara Wall, Helen Wilems, Katherine Onstott, Martha Baldwin, Paul-ine Manes, Susie Doe, Lisa Patterson and Barbara Young. A quorum was present. Committee members in attendance: Judy Wolter and Carol Ann Barley.

The Minutes of the March 1, 2016 Board Meeting were approved as presented. The Treasurer’s Report for March (reporting through March 31, 2016) was approved with one correction to be made; T-shirt expenses will be listed separately from T-shirt income.

OLD BUSINESS

New Member Welcome – The next New Member Welcome Orientation will be held on April 13th from 6:30 – 8:30 pm in the parlor across from the main sanctuary (near the Murphy Road entrance to FUMC). Carol Ann Barley has send out 14 invitations by mail; only one member has responded to date. An e-mail will be sent out to remind new members, then personal contact with non-RSVPers.

Discussion of Questions about 501(c)(3) requirements regarding m em bers not benefit-ting from guild funds. Pauline Manes read out the relevant passages from IRS information she had found. It was decided that providing water and snacks at certain guild functions (e.g. shop hops) is acceptable as no one particular member is expected to benefit.

NEW BUSINESS

Board Elections/Nominating Committee -- A Nominating Committee will need to be selected at the April general business meeting. Susie Doe will serve as the board representative on the committee. Helen Wilems will run for President as current President Elect. Pauline Manes has agreed to continue as Treasurer. Lisa Patterson and Debbie Garner will move up to the Program Chair and Workshop Chair positions. Judy Wolter has volunteered to become VP for Member-ship. Open positions are President Elect, Program Chair Elect, Workshop Chair Elect, Secretary, Rep-at-Large, and Editor. The nominating committee will present a slate of officers in the June newsletter in lieu of presenting at the June meeting as this date is reserved for our shop hop.

Membership & Financial Records Back-ups – Barbara Elliott submitted a report conveying her concerns about the viability of the current membership program. She believes that “The member-

ship program and database needs to be untethered from any individual member or board member to protect the

database and the ability of the ever-changing membership chair to reliably continue maintaining the Guild’s da-

tabase. The program needs to be future proofed from Microsoft or any other entity making changes to their soft-

ware which might “break” our program. We should not be relying on the charity of any one individual member to

maintain a program that can be broken by outside sources not under our control. The loss of or unavailability of

that one member who maintains the database is the weak point which can cause the loss of the entire database.

The database also needs reliable back up so that if any one member’s computer goes down the database is not

lost. For these reasons it is the strong recommendation of this chair that the board make a budget for the mem-

bership position and hire a third party subscription cloud based service. My cursory research indicates that there

are affordable services that will allow us to bundle the functions of maintaining the database, sending emails,

and also managing and maintaining dues and other financial information. By hiring a third party subscription

membership program we hire support for that program when things go wrong and we no longer become depend-

ent on any one member who has moved on to other responsibilities or is otherwise no longer available.” The board requested that Barbara Elliott should research the third party option more thoroughly and report her findings to the board next month. The board also discussed the possibility of buying a computer for use by the Membership Chairman. The current budget does not include allocation for either of these items and the board suggested deferring this matter for consideration by the

The President contacts all voting board members using guild provided e-mail addresses and/or personal e-mail addresses as listed in the most current version of the Membership Directory (or as provided to the Director of Membership).

Members must respond to the original e-mail within 48 hours of the notice being sent. The vote will only be considered valid if a quorum of the board members responds (within the re-
