Coastal Prairie Quilt Guild Of

Texas

Well, this is my twelfth president’s newsletter, which means it will soon be time to leave the guild in the very capable hands of Helen Wilems and her Board of Directors. After 4 years of serving on the board, it’ll be nice to just sit and be a spectator for a little while, at least. Although things didn’t go 100% smoothly-they never do-I sincerely hope that the current board and I were able to build on the work of those before us and that we left things a little better than we found them; without ruffling too many feathers! My most heartfelt thanks go to the ladies who served with me on the board, as well as to the committee chairs. You made our board and general meetings lively, and interesting, and creative. A very special thank you to everyone who said “yes” when asked to take on a job, or who just jumped in and did things that needed to get done. As I said in my very first letter, the guild belongs to the members and can’t be successful without you. Next month, over a year of planning will culminate in our 2016 Quilt Showcase, “Quilt Happy”. Congratulations to Julie and her team for doing a fantastic job organizing what is shaping up to be our best show ever. Good luck to everyone who has worked so hard to make Quilt Happy! a success. So as I ride off into the sunset, or at least into a spot where I can’t cause quite as much trouble, I wish the best for Helen, her board and the entire guild. I have been fortunate to get to know many of you and to count you as friends. Barb

We’re only about a month away from our 2016 Quilt Showcase, and the word

is volunteer, volunteer, volunteer. Yes, that means we need YOU!

What can you do?

Photography, Aug. 23-24. People are needed to help shuttle the quilts around

during the picture taking process.

Judging, Aug. 31-Sept. 1. If you’re interested in observing the judging, volun-

teer as a scribe or quilt runner. Only those who are actually working can be present, during

that time.

Hanging & Set Up, Sept. 8. Volunteers are needed for quilt hanging teams, as well as placard

and ribbon placers.

Quilt Happy!, Sept. 9-10. All hands on deck! You name it, we need help with it. Please volunteer,

even if you can only work for a couple of hours. A lot of members will be there the for the entire

show, so any break they can get would be much appreciated.

Take Down & Clean Up, 4:00 pm, Sept. 10. The more people we have taking down quilts and

organizing them, the quicker everyone will get theirs back. Plus, we have a deadline by which

we must be out of the building, Saturday evening, so need lots of help cleaning up.

Although we’ll gladly accept “walk-in” helpers for set up and during the show, it would be

very helpful if you would schedule when you can work ahead of time. That way we have an

idea of who is coming and when. Please sign up during the August meetings or contact Pam

Biswas at [email protected] to volunteer.

The next meeting of the full show committee will be Saturday, August 13, 10:00 am-12 noon

at the University Branch Library.

**Please note that there will not be an evening guild meeting on Sept. 7, due to show set up

the next morning.

Quilt Show News By Barb Wall

Donations of school supplies will be collect-

ed at both August meetings. These items will be given to children in need who attend lo-cal schools supported by FUMC. Thanks for

your generosity.

Barbara Beck Tribute by Carole DeGruy

Barbara Beck, one of the founding members of CPQG has recently passed. She was a beauti-ful person and a wonderful quilter. Barbara de-veloped macular degeneration, but as her vi-

sion declined, she didn't let it slow her down or stop her. Barbara began crocheting hats for

cancer patients by using a touch method. She found great joy in doing this. We loved her and enjoyed the interesting comments in our con-

versations at our Tuesday bee. She will be greatly missed and

never forgotten.

Community Service By Judy Wolter

August 3 evening meeting.

The speaker is Jackie Hillman and her lecture title is: The Goose is Loose on the Ranch.

Jackie Hillman, a native Texan, made her first quilt at the age of 16 but did not become an avid

quilter until the mid- 90's while living in Kuwait.

Although her three children are grown and on their own, finding time to quilt is a challenge

since she works full time as a speech-language pathologist in the public schools. Jackie lives

with her husband of 17 years in the country NW of Hempstead, TX and is frequently inspired

by her surroundings. She has been teaching workshops at her guild's quilt retreats, local quilt

shops and other guilds. Jackie began entering local quilt shows in 2009 and has won numerous

local awards including NQA Judge's Recognition Award in June of 2012 and best of show at the

2013 and 2014Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo as well as Best of Division in 2015.

Jackie is designing her own quilt patterns under the name of her company, Two Creeks Quilts

which she started in 2009. One of her patterns is featured in an article in the July 2013 issue

of American Quilter [email protected], 281-787-0111.

"The Goose is Loose on the Ranch"(Disappearing Flying Geese)

With over 20 years of experience under my belt as a quilt maker I have finally found my own

style and creativity. In this PowerPoint presentation and trunk show, I will share the results of

my discovery of a dramatic way to add originality to quilts using the traditional flying goose

block. I will present a selection of quilts from whimsical to sophisticated created with my Dis-

appearing Flying Geese techniques and explain how easy it can be to create beautiful unique

quilts that look much more complicated to construct than they actually are.

The August 18 day time meeting we will be turning in quilts for the quilt show.

CANDIDATES FOR GUILD BOARD POSITIONS 2016 / 2017:

Helen Wilems – Candidate for President

I moved to Katy about 4 years ago from North Texas. Within two weeks of moving to Sugar Land, I found the Coastal Prairie Quilt Guild and a home. Although, I am still a member of two guilds, CPQG has become my primary focus. I have joined a small bee and love doing community service quilts and working on Quilts of Valor. While a member of the quilt guilds in Frisco and Plano, I served as Nine-Patch Chairperson, Treasurer, VP of Membership, President and Co-Chair Person of the biennial quilt show of Plano. On a personal note, I am a widow with 5 children, 10 grandchildren and 3 wonderful daughters-in-law.

Mark Towle—Candidate for President Elect

Linda and I moved here from Kansas via north Texas in 1984. I started quilting in about 2004. I love bright colors and like to do everything for a quilt myself. I joined the Coastal Prairie Quilt Guild when it was founded. I have been involved in helping with all of the guild quilt shows. I look forward to serving the guilt as president elect.

Lisa Patterson – Candidate for VP Programs

Lisa has been sewing and crafting since she was a child. She started quilting passionately in 1993. If it has to do with quilting, she's both done it, and loves it! Her "style" is everything! She has made quilts using a whole gamut of techniques ... including traditional piecing, applique (both machine and hand), paper piecing, art quilting, etc. If it has to do with quilting, she has probably both made it and taught it! A few years ago she started long arming and enjoys the creativity that goes along with finishing quilts on the long arm. She is extremely excited to serve the guild as the program chair next year, and has a great variety of speakers/techniques that we will have the pleasure to participate in.

Judy Wolter – Candidate for VP Membership

I started quilting in 2003, when I lived in Kentucky. We moved to Texas in 2006. In 2013, we again moved, this time to Rich-

mond, and I joined the Coastal Prairie Quilt Guild in September of that year. I also joined the Pecan Grove Quilters Bee and this year, the Electric Quilt Bee. For the past year I served as the Community Service Chairperson. I've volunteered to run for

VP of Membership this coming year because I know that serving the quilt guild allows me to meet many talented wonderful people.

Debbie Garner – Candidate for Workshop Chair

I have been sewing since I was 12 years old in 4-H. This interest carried into my education and career choices. I am a graduate of the University of Arkansas where I majored in fashion merchandising and served as the student body president for the col-lege of Agriculture and Home Economics. I began my professional career in the executive training program with Dillard’s de-partment store. I have been a quilter for 15 years. We moved to Houston 8 years ago from Shreveport, LA when my husband was transferred to Houston. While in Louisiana, I owned my own full service quilt shop, “Material Girl”. I continue to quilt for my own pleasure and for the public.

Pauline Manes – Candidate for Treasurer

I joined Coastal Prairie Quilt Guild in December of 2011 when I was invited to attend a Christmas party. Soon thereafter I be-came Hospitality committee chair under Sally Staner’s presidency. Later I became the webmaster and maintain that position to date. I began sewing in my youth under the tutelage of my grandmother who was a tailor. I had been sewing for many years making my own clothing and clothes for my daughter. Through the guidance of a fellow bridge player, I made a patchwork jacket, never realizing that I had begun quilting. Once my sewing turned the corner from clothing to quilting, I cannot seem to find enough time to spend doing what I enjoy. My background to present for the position of Treasurer is extensive in the busi-ness and bookkeeping fields, as well as serving as Treasurer of the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce for a period of 2 years. I am extremely familiar with the program currently utilized for the guild and look forward to continuing to support the guild and working with the wonderful people I have met through my guild participation.

Kay Paul – Candidate for Workshop Chair Elect

I lived in Houston for a long time and moved to Sugar Land in 1991. I am a graduate of the University of Houston and spent many years teaching math and English, primarily in 8th grade. I can’t remember when I started quilting. I just wish I had started sooner. I currently teach quilting classes at JoAnn’s in Sugar Land. I love being in the guild and participating in the charity events, especially Quilts of Valor. I look forward to serving the guild in this board position. Carolyn Shelton – Candidate for Representative-at-Large

I’m a native Houstonian and joined the guild two months ago. I retired from corporate America in November 2015 and have been looking for ways to fill my time. The Coastal Prairie Quilt Guild looked like a good place to start. I signed up for my first quilt class at Quilters Emporium in 2008. It took me 4 years before I ever finished it. I started clothes sewing (self-taught) when I was 18. Being around other quilters has been fun and educational. Quilting retreats have given me the opportunity to make new friends and learn from all the talented quilters. I’m on my fifth quilt but hope to make many more. I’ve met so many of you and enjoyed the recent shop hop, and I look forward to getting to know more of you and helping the guild in any way I can.

CANDIDATES FOR GUILD BOARD POSITIONS 2016 / 2017:

Diane Aleman – Candidate for Editor

I have been quilting since 1995, when I took a class from two ladies at Joanne's .My first quilt was a log cabin and we tore the fabric strips. What a mess of strings. It was so much fun and I discovered I had a flair for choosing colors. And so it began. I have never met a fabric that I did not like. I still consider myself a beginner, because I still am trying to master sewing a quar-ter inch seam. I love Coastal Prairie Quilters Guild. Everyone is so amazing. It is so much fun to see what creations, you all have done! You inspire and challenge me to master that quarter inch seam and delve into my endless supply of fabric. Gwen Goldsberry—Candidate for Programs Elect. I am a Navy brat who was born in South Carolina and moved every two years until I was 18. Then I married an Air Force man and we moved to Alaska where we had our first child. I have two children, three grandsons and one great grandson. We moved to Texas in 1976 and have loved living here. I like to say we got here as fast as we could. I am retired from Chevron’s IT department. I’ve been quilting for ~30 years. I took a quilting class because my Mother gave me a Sunbonnet Sue quilt and that gift gave me the “bug”. I am a charter member of CPQG and have served on the board as editor many years ago. I look forward to getting involved with our guild again and having fun learning new techniques. I love looking at quilts and touching fabric…you should see my stash! I look forward to serving you and getting to know you all better.

Check out our guild website!!! There are tons of fun events

going on with other Guilds in our area!
