Greatness is waiting. Are you ready? Greatness is waiting. Are you ready?
“Wayne Gretzky’s success came from
skating to where the puck was going.
Mine came from already being there.”
- David Mettler
Well, not always…
That’s me (wearing orange) during a USA
Hockey International tournament in 2002.
And, yes, that’s the puck in the net! I
certainly wasn’t ‘there’ for that one!
Resilience and perseverance are traits a
“goalie” learns all too well. The simple facts
are: setbacks come, yet you can never stop
giving less than 100%.
Much like life, success in goaltending relies
on your ability to manage the situation, learn
from it, and maintain an undistracted focus
on the bigger picture. It just happens with a
lot of intensity.
When I first started “tweeting” in May 2010, I
had no idea how many people I would
influence. I posted popular quotes, things
people said that resonated with me, and my
own insights - which became “COACH’S
TIPS”. For the longest time, I had less than
10 followers, but I kept tweeting, linked them
to my LinkedIn account, Facebook business
page, and never gave up.
Today, people often say, “Hey! You’re the “COACH’S TIPs” guy!”, and tell me
how much they appreciate my tweets. A friend suggested I compile them into
a “book” - so… here it is! I hope you enjoy! Whatever it may be that you are
working towards, stick with it!

COACH’S TIP:

Busy people feel
overwhelmed. They're usually
on a treadmill going nowhere.
Be a productive person
instead. Get it Done.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Leaders need a strong sense
of self and a strong pride in
themselves to do what they
do.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Leaders with character stand
for something. They don't just
talk about these things, they
live them.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Listening begets listening.
Someone needs to go first,
might as well be you.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
20% of a situation (or data set)
produces 80% of the outcome
(results). Find and focus your
efforts on the key 20%.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
80% of the effort is spent on
the first 20% of a successful
endeavor. Plan well and build
momentum.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
A boss that has no interest in
the development of a
subordinate will not be that
person's boss for long.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
A desk is a dangerous place to
run your organization from.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
A key indicator of a hidden
agenda at work is when
something just doesn't seem
right. Look to see who is
profiting for clues.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
A leader doesn't have to be
cruel, unprofessional, or a
bully boss to be tough.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
A leaders inability or
unwillingness to trust others
will result in others' lack of
trust in them.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
A scarcity mindset will keep
you in a small game.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
A team playing to 'win' will
defeat a team playing 'not to
lose' every time.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
A vision is great, but it's
meaningless unless you have
values.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Accept only one standard -
excellence. The surest way to
maintain that standard is to
lead by example.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Achievement loses its
meaning if you don't enjoy the
process. Make it fun, exciting,
and rewarding to accomplish
your goals.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Adversity is a test to see if you
have matured as a leader, or
not.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
After making a decision - take
one immediate step towards
completing it, then plan the
second to build momentum.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Anyone can be a leader, but
only the fearless can be great.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
As a leader, your behaviors,
beliefs, attitudes, and example
are a powerful role model for
your staff members.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
As a leader, you need your
followers more than they need
you.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
As the leader, when you do
excellent work, the expectation
on everyone else is to do
excellent work.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
As the leader, your team will
typically become exactly what
you think it will.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
As you grow, you become
more of who you already are.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
As you lead, so shall your
organization become. Morale,
engagement, attitude of the
company are that of its
leaders.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Asking employees for input
shows respect, helps you
make the right decision, and
helps them invest in the work.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
At the end of the day, you're
really working for yourself.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Attention to detail will keep you
fully engaged, in-touch, and in
the know with your teams.
Don't rely on advisors.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Be aware of what you're
communicating. It's NOT what
you're saying 55% is
nonverbal cues, 38% is tone,
and 7% is words.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Be aware of your personal
areas for development. Ask for
feedback from a few trusted
sources and look for common
themes.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Be careful and be selective
with your goals. Scattering
your focus and your energy
weakens you.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Be careful with the labels you
assign to things. By naming
something a problem, you
make it one.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Be committed, yet flexible.
Dump things that aren't
moving your team toward its
goals.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Be self-motivated. Don't wait
for someone else to tell you to
do something, or when to do it.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Be supportive with those that
fail, unsympathetic with those
that don't even try.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Be sure you really want to
achieve a goal before you
commit yourself to it.
WHY>HOW.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Become a master of change
rather than a victim of it.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Before attending someone
else's meeting, make sure it is
necessary for you to be there.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Before you can effectively
influence and persuade others
you need to understand their
perspective.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Before you go home this
afternoon, plan the tasks you
wish to accomplish next week.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Being a leader demands a
responsibility FOR and a
responsibility TO your team.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Being a leader doesn't mean
everyone else is a follower. It
means you draw out the
possibilities around you.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Bridge the gaps between how
you see yourself (self-image)
and how others perceive you
(public image).
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Build your team with positive
people who share similar goals
to yours.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Change creates areas for
improvement. Even if you don't
support the change, embrace
the opportunities it brings.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Change happens. Adopt and
adapt, or you may be facing a
larger one.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Change is constant. Career
killer no. 2 today Failure to
anticipate, understand, and
adjust to the evolving
marketplace.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Change is not a one shot deal.
It's your job to build a direction
and foundation for sustained
change.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Change your perspective -
problems are always rich
opportunities.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Clearly defined and written
goals give people a sense of
security about the future and
give them confidence in their
efforts.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Common sense isn't common.
If you don't have it - solicit
other opinions, perspectives,
and feedback. Research
similar cases.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Communicating clear
expectations is not a one-time
thing. It's an ongoing
management duty that never
ceases.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Complex things are usually
made up of simple
components. Apply the divide
and conquer approach to
every level of your work.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Compromise is a form of lose-
lose agreement; it's a quick fix.
Build trust and go for the
synergy of win-win.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Confidence and enthusiasm
are the best traits to display
when making that first
impression.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Conflict is a part of even
healthy organizations. It can't
be avoided. Successful
executives listen for win-win
solutions.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Conquer fear of change.
Change = growth,
Growth = personal
satisfaction.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Contact points between
leaders and their reports are
the focal points of the
organization's success.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Continuous improvement is
the secret to sustainable
success.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Create and rank both weekly
and daily To-Do lists by
importance and urgency.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Culture is fostered through
stories. What is said about the
current events in your
organization sets the tone for
the future.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Decisive leaders build trust.
Indecisive leaders tax the
entire organization. Research,
decide, follow-up, adjust.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Despite all the press, Thank
yous are still rare. Sincerely
thanking someone reinforces
behaviors and relationships.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Difficult conversations are well
named. Don't put them off.
Conversation is a two way
dialogue - it's not a lecture.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Do first things first, one at a
time.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Do it for greatness, not for
money. Money follows
greatness.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Do what you know you should
do, even when you don’t feel
like doing it.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Does your team know what
excellent performance looks
like? Now there's a meeting
worth having!
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Don’t lower your expectations
to accommodate someone that
refuses to raise theirs.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Don't ask a question without
first attempting as much of the
productive effort you could do
by yourself.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Don't ask people if they
understand. Ask them how
they will use the information
and the next steps they will
take.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Don't be too busy to do
something productive.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Don't confuse value with price.
If you raise your price but the
value remains the same, you
will lose your customer.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Don't confuse working with
making progress. Spend 80%
of your time on things that
MOVE you forward.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Don't focus on the negative.
Instead of stating what you
can't or won't do, talk about
what you will do instead.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Don't just track numbers.
Track the QUALITY of the
numbers.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Don't lead knowledge workers
as if they were manual
workers. Effectiveness >
Efficiency.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Don't let a bad situation fester.
You will either pay now, or pay
later. Later almost always
costs more.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Don't let yourself become
more comfortable with old
problems than you are with
new solutions.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Don't spend time organizing
things you should discard.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Don't wait until you are writing
a resume to develop your
career objective. What
experience(s) do you need to
get there?
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Effective is based on the
precise understanding of the
situation at hand, not the fad
of the month.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Employee empowerment
means giving your employees
the responsibility AND the
authority to take action.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Employee satisfaction and
engagement are directly
related to the quality of
leadership they perceive.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Encourage candor. Without it,
no change is possible.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Encouragement and praise are
free, and often the best way to
motivate people.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Even a simple event can get
complicated when it involves
coordinating others.
Communicate, communicate,
communicate!
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Even in a very large
organization, strive for
individual relationships
everywhere you can.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Even in the business world
there's too much HOPING
things happen, and not
enough MAKING things
happen.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Everyone contributes to the
mission and every task counts
- no matter how small. Remind
your people often.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Everyone on your team must
have objectives, know how to
get there, and what's in it for
them.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Excuses, even if they are true,
are still excuses.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Failing to act, or to ask, is
often the greatest failure of
them all.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Fewer than one in ten e-mails
is important. Turn off your alert
and get to work.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Find your Power hour. The
time during the day when
you're the most productive.
Save this for your toughest
assignments.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Focus on the larger goal helps
you overcome setbacks along
the way. Never lose sight of
the big picture.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Focus on the positive. Leaders
tend to get more of what they
focus on. People and teams
thrive in a positive
atmosphere.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
For the most productive
meetings, check your title at
the door.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Foster self-motivation by
providing the right conditions,
opportunities, and environment
for those you lead.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Friendly competition doesn't
only have to be used to
motivate sales teams. Just be
sure you're promoting the right
behaviors.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Get your team out of victim
thinking. Focus on the options
they have and can do.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Goals are great, but success
comes when you achieve
them. Spend time moving, not
measuring.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Goals don't have to be written
text. An image of what you
want can also be effective. A
photo is worth a thousand
words!
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Good planning not only tells
you how to get from 'here' to
'there', but also identifies the
resources required.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Good projects are always
successful in the end. If it's not
successful - it's not the end!
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Good things happen when
people stand up and become
the leader they were meant to
be.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Great leaders inspire the
middle 75% to perform like the
top 10%.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Great leaders not only use
their own strengths well, they
help others discover theirs.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Great presentations anticipate
& address potential questions
& objections in ways that are
meaningful to your target
audience.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Greatness is won or lost
during the times when nobody
is watching.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Habit replaces decision-
making. Good habits can be
created to keep you moving in
the right direction on auto-pilot.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Habits define you by directing
your emotional and physical
patterns. Habits are hard to
stop but can be replaced over
time.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Help a diverse group bond
together by coming to
agreement on the most
important shared values to the
group.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Help others find their
strengths. Encourage and help
them with opportunities to
work within them.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Help someone climbing the hill
and you get to the top
yourself.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
How much of your
communication is centered
around yourself? Reduce your
I's to and phrase your
messages to focus on others.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
How you do one thing is how
you do many. Good and bad
habits create patterns that are
hard to break.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
How you handle the effects of
a mistake is more significant
than the mistake itself.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
If the deal doesn't look or
sound 'right', it probably isn't.
Trust your instincts.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
If you can't count on your
people to do what needs to be
done, YOU have a big
problem.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
If you don’t go after what you
want, you’ll never have it. It's
as simple as that.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
If you don't address a negative
behavior, you are condoning it.
Address issues quickly and
there will be less of them.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
If you resort to yelling,
intimidation, or bullying, the
situation is bigger than you.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
If you want something, ask. If
you don't ask, the answer will
be No 100% of the time.
Asking starts a negotiation
process.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
In addition to a To Do list,
make a Stop Doing list.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
In Outlook you can drag e-
mails onto your task list or
your calendar to schedule
reminders and take action.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
In writing and in speech, make
sure your audience knows
WHY they're listening to you.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Instructions can be interpreted
many different ways.
Encourage questions and
have them repeated back to
you for clarification.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Is there a better way to
accomplish the purpose?
Cancel the meeting!
Executives report 12+
hrs/week in unproductive
meetings.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
It usually gets worse before it
gets better. Don't let an early
loss discourage you.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
It’s not enough to know HOW
to do things; you have to know
WHY you do them.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
It's better to demand more out
of people than to settle for the
level of performance they
choose to give.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
It's much easier and faster, to
do things right and let success
chase you.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
It's not always WHAT you do,
but HOW you do it that
determines your true success.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
It's not who you are that holds
you back, it's who you think
you aren't.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
It's up to you as a leader to
create a context in which
everyone wants to take actions
that make a difference.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Just because it worked in the
past, doesn't mean it will work
today. Be sure you ACT and
not REACT from an outdated
paradigm.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Just because you think your
objectives are reasonable
doesn't guarantee others do.
Learn the true agendas and
priorities.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Just because you yell and get
loud doesn't mean you're right,
it just makes you look like a
loud, wrong idiot.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Keep the vision and its
benefits in front of your team
at all times. What's in it for
them?
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Keep your team focused on
the big picture, the Master
Plan. Put it above petty
personal issues.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Know your energy clock.
Schedule appropriate work
during appropriate times for
you to be the most productive.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Knowing how to do it isn't as
important as understanding
why.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Knowing what you want and
having a plan aren't enough.
You also need a passion to
succeed to maintain the
sustained efforts.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Lack of feedback is the #1
reason for poor performance
on the job.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Leaders are effective through
their style, not their
credentials.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Leaders are not paid to take
action. They are paid to get
results.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Leaders don't tell the story.;
they make the story better.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Leaders focus on results, not
the efforts, and hold
themselves accountable for
the performance of the whole.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Leaders see the potential of
their people, often before they
do. Empower them and help
them grow into future leaders.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Leaders shape culture. Look at
your team to see what kind of
culture your leadership is
creating.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Leaders talk about leadership,
enthusiastically!
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Leaders turn problems into
opportunities and inspire
others to do the same.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Maintain professionalism.
Impatience, annoyance &
anger are as easily conveyed
through communications as
they are concealed.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Make a folder for each regular
meeting. Instead of worrying
about what to bring each
meeting, bring the folder.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Make a list of the critical skills
required on your team. What is
done well, what needs work?
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Make optimism a priority.
Teach it. Model it. Purge your
organization of people that
don't get it.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Make your team more effective
have an attendee time and
report total non-productive
meeting minutes at the end.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Making people mad,
sometimes, is part of being a
leader. You can't please
everyone.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Making people follow you isn’t
the same as making them
want to follow you.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Many people forget that
interviewing skills are also
used to move on to better jobs.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Many things will impact you.
You choose, by your attitude, if
the impact is positive or
negative.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Military and sports models of
leadership don't always cross
over into the more open
environment of a corporation.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Mistakes are only fatal when
you fail to admit them. Learn
the lesson and don't repeat it.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Modify subject lines in your e-
mail to include TO DO dates.
Use the START dates, not
DUE dates.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Momentum is easy to
maintain, but hard to initiate.
Make constant and never
ending improvement a habit to
live and lead by.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
More important than making
the numbers is HOW you
made them.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Most obstacles don’t have half
the strength you think they
have.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Most problems in an
organization could be solved if
people rise to the occasion
and become the leader they
were meant to be.
COACH’S TIP:

Most relationship problems
start with poor
communications.
Communicate effectively and
seek feedback.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Motivation problems? Set
small achievable goals and
use them to generate positive
energy and build momentum.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Never begin a conversation
with “I just signed...”. Your
attorney's job isn't to GET you
out of trouble, it's to KEEP you
out.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
NEVER, EVER, underestimate
the value of a good network.
Do one thing each day to
expand or strengthen yours.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
New ideas or ways of working
often fail because someone
key to its success was not part
of development or
implementation.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Not hearing feedback from
your employees is your
problem, not theirs.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Nothing saves time like good
preparation. Invest your time
wisely in the early stages of a
project to save time later.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
On Presentations sub-bullets
are clutter. These are the
things you should know as the
presenter and talk about.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Once you decide on a goal,
ask why you don't already
have it. These are the things
you will need to overcome
along the way.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Once you have the right
people on board, strategy and
execution take care of
themselves.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Operating across team
boundaries effectively is as
important as operating with
your own team.

Organizes tasks and
resources efficiently,
accurately, and in a timely
manner - What most
performance appraisals look
for.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Part of you pushes you to
greatness, part of you holds
you back. Which part of you
are you listening to?
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
People are motivated to
achieve, learn, or contribute to
a purpose. Find the key to
unlocking your employees.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
People don't quit their
companies, they quit their
bosses.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
People live up to what's
expected of them. Not just
their peers, or boss'
expectations, but also their
own.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
People remember little
courtesies and kindnesses.
How are you remembered?
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
People that are afraid to make
mistakes seldom do anything.
Boldly go.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
People that do what it takes to
get by are best motivated by
positive acknowledgements,
praise, and encouragement.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
People trust you when you are
genuine and authentic, not a
carbon copy of someone else.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
People will exceed a great
leader's expectations. A poor
leader is like a tax draining
your organization.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Perception is reality. Others'
perceptions of you differ from
your perception of you. Are
you checking?
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Perseverance earns trust and
respect. Success comes to
those who commit to what they
love despite the challenges.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Planning and goal setting let
you manage the business
while taking care of the
business.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Planning is a skill developed
over time. Review how things
turn out at the end of each
day/week and make
adjustments.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
‘Plus-it’. Put that little effort or
time into your next assignment
to give them a little more than
they expected.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Positive thinking won't get you
what you want. Positive
ACTION will. Understand the
obstacles, plan your approach,
and act.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Practice difficult conversations
with a trusted colleague before
having them.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Prepare in advance for
meetings. Present your
material with confidence. Don't
make image building your
primary objective.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Put your mind at ease - write
things down and file them
appropriately. Removing
clutter helps you focus on the
important.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Relationships are like bank
accounts. It's best to start by
putting $$$ in, before asking
for any back.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Remember the old saying You
only get one chance to make a
first impression. Make it count!
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Replacing a habit or thought
pattern takes 21 - 30 days of
conscious effort.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Responding too quickly can
limit your options, too late may
leave you out of the loop. Act,
don't react, by owning the
timing.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Results depend on
relationships.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Run efficient meetings. Send
agendas, watch the clock, and
interrupt people taking
discussions off-track.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Set personal standards above
those around you, and stick to
them. Be accountable for your
actions and learn from any
mistakes.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Setting and meeting deadlines
builds credibility. Be sure you
are able to meet your
commitments before agreeing
to them.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Show your employees the
significance of what they do
and how it contributes to the
bigger picture.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Six months from now you may
wish you started today.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Small changes in your habits
can lead to huge changes in
your results.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Smooth seas don't produce
great sailors.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Some of the best moments of
life come from doing the things
that scare you the most.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Some people are great project
starters, others are great
closers. Make sure you have
both types on your team.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Spend at least 50% of your
time on people.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Spend more time defining
exactly what you want, less on
how to get there. Keep
flexibility in the plan, not the
goal.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Spend quality time with the
people you are with, not the
ones on your cell phone.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Standing still in an
accelerating world really has
the effect of pushing you
backwards.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Start any communication by
clearly defining your purpose.
With the objective established,
tailor the message to your
audience.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Starting with the ATTITUDE of
a good listener will help you
get the ATTRIBUTES of a
good listener.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Stay committed to the goal,
but be flexible in the approach.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Stay true to who you are and
surround yourself with the right
people. Seek complementary
skills over similar personalities.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Stop adding fees for what you
have already been giving away
for free. Be creative and add
value.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Stop doing stuff like a boss -
do it like a CEO.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Stop lying. People know that,
“I didn't have the time to...”
really means you had other
priorities.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Success and failure are the
fruits of your daily routine.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Success has little to do with
the resources you control; it's
about your resourcefulness.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Successful leaders lead by
asking questions. Ask people
for their opinions and how you
can help.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Take too busy out of your
vocabulary. It's
disempowering. What you do,
or don't do, are choices to you.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Team members contribute to
your goals when they feel their
goals are being accomplished
in the process.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Teams develop confidence
and trust when leaders focus
on the results, not the team
members.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Teams need group-confidence
the same way individuals need
self-confidence to overcome
challenges.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Technology has accelerated
the pace and demands of the
marketplace. Successful skills
and talents of yesterday may
be no more.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
The best way to earn respect
is through consistency and
honesty.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
The challenges you master
today develop the character
you will need tomorrow.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
The customer isn't always
right, but if you argue with him,
and he is - you look like an
ass. Listen first.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
The first step to self-
improvement is to
acknowledge a few unpleasant
realities. Don't know any? Your
co-workers and friends do.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
The hardest part of any
endeavor is the start. Building
momentum makes it easier -
keep moving. A stop means
starting again.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
The key to convincing others is
to find the right argument to
make your point. Question to
learn what will be most
effective.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
The language you use
contributes to your image.
Consider both the impression
you want to create and the
result you would like.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
The last thing you should do at
work each day is tomorrow's
To Do list. Write it down, clear
your mind, and leave it behind.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
The means and consequences
of resolution are much more
important than the causes of
conflict in an organization.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
The most difficult, yet critical
skills to master are listening
skills. Eye contact, posture,
and good questions will help.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
The most important feature of
effective communication is the
purpose. Establish a clear
objective if you hope to reach
it.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
The number one reason for
failure is the failure to start.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
The standards of an
organization are set by the
PERFORMANCE of the
leaders. Get off your a$$ if you
expect your people to.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
The strength of a group is the
ability to respectfully bring
different ideas to the table.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
The true mark of a
professional is preparation.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
The way to correct a bad habit
isn't to drop it. You need to
REPLACE it with another
behavior that serves you.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
The way you set performance
goals with your employees is
as important as the goals
themselves.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
The worst reason to have a
meeting is to share
information. Use another
means of communication.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
There is an important
difference between
'performance' and 'excellence'.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
There is an important element
of how much and how you
change others in the definition
of leadership success.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
There is no growth in your
comfort zone. Get out of it!
Live! Learn! Grow!
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
There is no pride lost in asking
for help. It's a skill successful
leaders do well.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Think and act continuously on
your top three priorities.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Think and dream big, but
pursue what's realistic.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Think of your presentations as
performances. Identify the
three key takeaways and keep
them clear throughout.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Three key things to look at in
team dynamics are attitudes,
habits, and personality traits.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Throwing money at a problem
is rarely the best answer and
prevents you from making key
discoveries that may be
causing others.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
To be effective you must
provide the right conditions,
opportunities, and environment
for those you lead, and then
lead by example.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Too often metrics driven
organizations forget that
people drive metrics.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Top teams look to themselves
for ways to improve, rather
than to the boss.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Trophies, medals, and awards
don't make champions, hard
work, dedication, and
perseverance do.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
True listening skills will
separate you from the crowd.
Listen with empathy and
patience. Acknowledge what
was said.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Trust is a big concept. It either
means something or breaks
everything.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Trust is the ultimate leadership
characteristic. People will
follow you as much as they
trust you. Lose trust, you're
done.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Unfocused energy? Unfocused
resources? Lack of direction or
sense of accomplishment?
Review or establish objectives
and goals.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Urgency keeps you focused on
immediate needs, but the big
picture must include personal
development. For you, and
your team.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
We live in an exponential
world. Yesterday's solutions
don't meet tomorrow's needs.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
What are the ground rules for
your team? Have the team
develop and post them in your
meeting room.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
What do you want to be when
you grow up? Procrastination
won't get you there.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
What does your audience
expect to come away with?
Overdeliver value, and prepare
answers to anticipated
questions.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
What gets postponed gets
abandoned. The challenging
executive decisions aren't
what TO work on, but what
NOT to work on.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
What is the other person's
need, or point of view?
Understand this before
pushing your own agenda.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
What is your greatest value to
your organization? How did
you demonstrate that this
week? You still have two days.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Whatever your endeavor, start
NOW and pay attention to your
results.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
When considering your team's
effectiveness, look at
sustained effort, controlled
attention, and concentrated
energy.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
When everything is a priority,
nothing is a priority. Be
disciplined about what is truly
important.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
When inspiration strikes and
you're on the road, leave
yourself a voicemail.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
When leading others, the goal
is to get the best from them,
not to do it all yourself.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
When making your list of
things to START doing in 2012
- make room for them with a
STOP doing list.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
When people lack ownership
of an idea, they will resist it.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
When reorganizing, a few
people will fall out. These
aren't typically people that will
be missed.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
When your personal character
as a leader is low, so are the
standards you will receive from
your team.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
When you're close to
achieving your goals, push
your efforts a little further. You
may end up well above your
expectations!
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Who are the successful people
in your company? Do more of
what they do or realize you
may not be in the right place
for you.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Who is managing your career?
What is your next move? What
are you doing today to get
there?
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Who is successful in your
company? What qualities do
they exhibit and how do you
stack up? Do they align with
your values?
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
With responsibility there is no
middle ground - either you are
accountable, or not.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Without a clear vision you're
working for yesterday rather
than for tomorrow.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Without a personal vision you
won't have leadership
standards or know the type of
organizations you will be
successful in.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Without a unifying vision or
purpose, your team will be lost
in the chaos of urgency and
knee-jerk reactions.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Without activity, there is no
opportunity.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Working FOR your people
makes them stronger and
more competent, which makes
YOU more effective.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Write down five reasons why
anyone would WANT to be led
by you. List an example or
two.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Write down the first 15 things
you do each day for a week.
Are they serving you?
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
You can be a winner without
making others into losers.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
You can only lead people you
appreciate and value.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
You can't make progress
without making decisions. Ask
empowering questions and
don't be afraid to follow your
heart.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
You don't learn anything by
talking.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
You don't need an event to
change something about
yourself. Make the decision
and start living the new you
today.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
You get more out relationships
when you focus on what you
can put into them rather than
what you can take out of them.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
You get paid for what your
employees do, not for what
you do.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
You need fewer resources as
you become more resourceful.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
You need to establish a clear
objective if you hope to reach
it.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
You won't make the highlight
reel if you don’t make a play.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Your attitude towards others is
the most important DECISION
you can make.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Your mistakes don't determine
who you are, your reaction to
them does.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Your reputation for excellence
in an organization is based
more on perception than the
actual work you do.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Your self-image will largely
determine the level of success
you will reach, on the job and
as an individual.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Your TO DO list should be for
tomorrow, not today. When
you plan ahead you think
things through and prepare.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Acknowledge history - where
your organization is coming
from. Focus on where you are
going.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Consider the little things.
Remember, small rudders
steer great ships.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Excellence is not what you
know; it's what you do with
what you know, and how you
do it.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Don't just sit in your office
giving orders. Demonstrate the
actions and values you expect
from your team.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
It is better to be accused of
micromanaging than to miss a
deadline for a deliverable
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
If you want to change it, you
have to track it. Showing the
payoff for action and change
demonstrates value.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
"How are you going to fix
this?" is more effective than
"Let me show you how to fix
this."
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
The worker is responsible. The
leader is accountable.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Balance pushing for positive
change with maintaining order.
The status quo, is a trap to
avoid.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Activity becomes productivity
only when it gets the right
things done. Are you active, or
productive?
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Teach your team to take pride
in their work. Even menial
tasks contribute to a bigger
picture.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Even if you have pains, you
don't have to be one.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
In leadership, the more you
know, the less you need to
say.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
The secret isn't in the size of
the step you take... the secret
is just to take it.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Some employees like the
challenge of a broad goal.
Others prefer smaller
connected goals to be
successful.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Thank people, even if they fail
- as long as they gave it their
best shot.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Lead by example: create a
culture where you talk to each
other instead of about each
other.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
A leader can not move a
department ahead by making
the decisions for them.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
If your department is failing,
the place to look for the
solution is the mirror.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Being a leader has nothing to
do with your title. Leadership
comes from your actions
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
As the leader, you have the
most profound impact on your
team's retention, satisfaction,
and productivity.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
People are creatures of habit -
are yours serving you or
helping your organization
move forward?
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Individuals can move faster,
but teams move further.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
In every adversity is the seed
of a greater benefit.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
The only power something has
is over you is the power you
give it by your thoughts
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
If you fail to lead today, you
best prepare to manage
tomorrow.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Charm will last about fifteen
minutes. After that, you had
better be able to deliver
something.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Busy people are more positive
than people that are idle.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
When you believe it will work
out, you see opportunities.
When you believe it won't, you
see obstacles.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Mediocre leaders get people to
do their job. Great leaders get
people to do their best.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
If you act like a victim, you will
be treated as one.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Don't make long-term
decisions on temporary
emotions.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Never underestimate the value
of a good adviser!
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
The reward of a tough
assignment isn't what you get
from it - it's who you become
by doing it.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Talent is natural. Excellence is
a choice.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Information is not knowledge,
and knowledge is not wisdom.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Be extraordinary. Do the
ordinary with your own
personal touch of 'extra' in it.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Your actions speak about you
more than your words.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
When you do what you love,
you don't need others to
motivate you.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Don't underestimate the
planning and preparation
required to achieve an
"anyone could do this"
performance.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
When you can't change the
situation, change your
organization.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Great leaders know the
questions to ask.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
There is always a point where
you choose to escalate a
situation, or to leave it.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Don't be one of the leaders
who mundanely "reports the
numbers". Take an interest,
"own" them.

No matter how many mistakes
you make, or how slow you
progress, you are ahead of
everyone who isn’t trying.
COACH’S TIP:

"The ability to act" seems to be
a misunderstood leadership
trait. Give up the "drama", and
lead.
COACH’S TIP:

Performing well in the
moment is related to practicing
well, before the moment.
COACH’S TIP:

The problem isn't the problem;
your reaction is the problem.
COACH’S TIP:

It only becomes "work" when
you would rather be doing
something else.
COACH’S TIP:

Look at every situation with
the expectation that you can
make it work or make it better.
COACH’S TIP:

Effective leaders use good
sales skills to influence people.
Maybe that's why it's called
getting "buy-in"?
COACH’S TIP:

Do business with human
beings - not companies.
COACH’S TIP:

The results of a project have a
much smaller impact on the
organization than the efforts
made to complete it
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
There are a number of
reasons for lack of
performance. "Lack of skills" is
very low on the list.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
If you ask someone how they
solved a problem, they won't
say, "I bitched about it until it
fixed itself."
COACH’S TIP:

No matter how much you want
somebody to do something,
they aren't likely to do it until
they want to.
COACH’S TIP:

Asking permission before
giving feedback helps ensure
the recipient is open to hearing
the message.
COACH’S TIP:

Without establishing a
relationship, you're not likely to

Your philosophy will bring you
results or excuses. You cannot
have both.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Your effectiveness as a leader
is directly related to the quality
of the people that most closely
surround you
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Let others know what you're
working on - it will help you
become accountable, enlist
their support, and feedback.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Don't be "the person (or group)
everyone is waiting for" on a
project team. Anticipate needs
and get them done.
COACH’S TIP:

For many, the most difficult
part of problem solving is
understanding it completely
before diving in with a cure.
COACH’S TIP:

Generally, advice only works
when one person has
specifically asked for it.
COACH’S TIP:

Never underestimate the
power of six seconds of insane
courage.
COACH’S TIP:

Thinking through at least
three possible alternatives will
help you create a better
solution in the end.
COACH’S TIP:

At any given moment you have
the power to say: This is not
how the story is going to end.
COACH’S TIP:

Imagination should be used,
not to escape from reality, but
to create it.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Every result, or outcome, is a
stepping stone.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Dedicate your power and
energy to the solutions, not to
the problems.
COACH’S TIP:

A positive attitude will bring
you opportunities. A negative
attitude will bring you
obstacles.
COACH’S TIP:

Achievement is a powerful
motivator. Celebrate small
victories along the path to the
overall goal.

Authenticity comes from trust
and delivering your promises.
COACH’S TIP:

People may doubt what you
say, but will believe what you
do.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Sometimes the right question
is better than the right answer.
Questions engage, involve,
and develop people.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
To be good, you have to
practice every day. To be a
champion, you have to get a
little better every day.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
You don't need to attend every
argument you're invited into.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Sometimes a little step
backwards leads to a HUGE
leap forwards.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Setting the expectation for
something to get done is just
the beginning.
COACH’S TIP:

Creating opportunities > Your
circumstances.
COACH’S TIP:

The higher up the echelon
you get, the more you need to
help others become winners.
COACH’S TIP:

The needs of the organization
> The need to feed an ego.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
Make changes, not excuses.
COACH’S TIP:
www.twitter.com/davidmettler
If you don't agree with the
advice you asked for, just say
“Thank you”.
COACH’S TIP:

Some people can't believe in
themselves until someone else
believes in them first.
COACH’S TIP:

stand back.

The only thing worse than a
loser is someone who won't
admit they played badly.
