Focus on Table Tennis

The local premier club “Kidlington Forum Table Tennis club” have made significant progress in the past three years in recruiting new players, improving the standard and promoting the sport in many schools. The recent Oxon Schools competition had over 100 competitors and was played at a good standard.

The keys to this success have been the following:

Kidlington acquiring its own dedicated premises with the support of the English Table Tennis Association and the local council. The club now has access to premises five evenings a week. The club boasts 12 local league teams who play their matches over two nights. Two nights focus on junior coaching and the other night is an open night that attracts players of all abilities and from numerous backgrounds.

Oxfordshire’s top player Karl Bushell qualified as a level 2 UKCC coach and started an active programme of coaching in Oxfordshire schools. As a result over 200 pupils have received coaching and many have progressed to join local clubs and some are now competing in national events. More local players have qualified as coaches and will support local clubs and schools.

The support of the national association who have developed many varied programmes to promote the sport to individuals of all ages.

The numerous local volunteers that are the backbone of all local clubs and leagues. Aubrey Hughes at Kidlington started the club 37 years ago and is still the most active volunteer at the club despite being in his late 70’s.

Nationally, table tennis is growing in participation and with progressive clubs like Kidlington it is likely that this trend will be sustained over the next few years. For more information about Kidlington Forum Table Tennis Club click here

FUNDING

Free coach education for a year

UKA and England Athletics have announced plans to provide free coach education for a year as part of their commitment to a long term coaching legacy following the London Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The access to the newly launched Event Group modules and qualifications will be made available to eligible coaches free of charge until May 2013, in a move to ensure coaches in the UK can gain access to the best quality coach education in a truly significant year for the sport.

By making the qualification free of charge to coaches for the first year, the bodies have further underlined the emphasis on a coaching legacy that lasts beyond Olympic and Paralympic year.

BIG launches new funding strategy Announcing its priorities in England to 2015, the Big Lottery Fund (BIG) will put hundreds of millions of

pounds into long-term projects to tackle complex social problems in England’s neediest areas. BIG said it could award between £100 million and £150 million in each of three or four cause areas to fund schemes lasting up to eight years. The funder will decide on the geographical areas in England with the greatest need that it wants to target over the next few months for the long-term funding. Partnerships, which could include charities, community groups and councils, can apply for grants to develop their schemes and, if the pilots are successful, they can get longer-term funding.

One of the cause areas would be tackling entrenched problems such as alcoholism, drug abuse and domestic violence. Another would be projects for older people, and two more cause areas are yet to be announced. Other announcements included:

Awards for All will be increased from £56 million in 2011/12 to £57 million in 2012/13. The scheme will continue to fund small community projects but also pay for groups to develop ideas to a stage at which they could apply for grants.

The introduction of online applications for Awards for All with decisions received in as little as one or two weeks compared with the four to five weeks it can take now.

The fund’s Reaching Communities programme will be increased from £148 million in 2011/12 to £150 million in 2012/13.

BIG is considering the use of social investment in some projects in various funding programmes and where appropriate, helping projects develop the skills to attract social investors.

BIG anticipates that it will have £1.5 billion of funding to 2015, or from £500 million to £600 million a year if existing levels of lottery ticket purchasing continue. http://www.governmentfunding.org.uk/Default.aspx
