COACHING PHILOSOPHYAs a coach, it is important to be true to who I am. Every team has a personality which is a reflection of the coaching staff ’s core beliefs. My philosophy is direct and to the point; PUSH FORWARD TO IMPROVE EVERY AREA OF YOUR LIFE, EVERY SINGLE DAY. The best way to do this is to be true to yourself. The team will always sense what really matters to me as a coach. My style of coaching is at its best when I am coaching and stressing what I am feeling in the moment. Preparation allows those moments of coaching to occur and be honest. The team is around the coaching staff enough to know the personalities, demeanors, and true beliefs of their coaches. If you attempt to be someone you are not, your players, team and administration will eventually distrust you as a leader. Green Bay’s legendary Coach Dick Bennett once told me, “Be true to yourself so the kids know you are real.” This advice has strengthened my belief and conviction in how to coach my team on a day to day basis.

My job as a coach is to help each member of our team and staff reach his full potential and improve each day. My guidance will help them reach this potential as a student, an athlete, and as a person. This is not an easy task, but it is an exciting challenge. I am in coaching to face this challenge each day and achieve great things.

The cornerstone of my philosophy consists of discipline, honesty, enthusiasm, and family. Discipline means getting your players to understand what is the right thing to do and doing it right every time. Honesty is being true to yourself, which will help guide your team to being true to themselves. Enthusiasm is the base from which everything great was ever accomplished. Finally, promoting a family atmosphere within our program will facilitate a culture of unity and foster a positive legacy in our program year after year.

COACHING PHILOSOPHYOn the basketball court our players will have an attitude that is positive and engaging. They will be known for playing with great effort, unselfishness, and enthusiasm, and they will have fun in the process. By emphasizing these key points, we will be positioned to have great success as a team. I believe in pressure basketball on both ends. The pillar of our program will be defense. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that “offense wins game, but defense wins championships”. We will be known for Physically Attacking, Defending, and Rebounding. Defensively, we will put constant pressure on our opponent’s offense with the ability to change defenses throughout the game. Offensively, it is important to push the ball while being able to set up and attack in the half court. We will not be a one dimensional team. Dictating the tempo of the game is extremely important to us. We will be a consistent team. I have a clear vision of how our team will play and we will work to achieve that vision every day.

Keeping the game simple and the team’s day to day life simple is vitally important. We need to make things clear and straight forward in order to get the best out of our players. Simplicity leads to greater clarity. We must teach them what we expect through clear, consistent terms and then hold them accountable in order to reach the expected goals.

In conclusion, I will never lose sight of what my main responsibility is as a coach. I will develop each student-athlete to his full potential, on and off the court. Basketball is a great tool to use to help develop our team in all areas of life: discipline, hard work, togetherness, enthusiasm, and honesty.

PROGRAM AND BASKETBALL GOALSIt is extremely important to set clear goals when building and sustaining a basketball program to avoid wasted time and energy. Having a clear objective in everything we do will be a major goal in the program. Being motivated and staying motivated will bring our program to great heights.

Goals provide a challenge and a motivation to succeed. Winning games will always be important, but the goals that we set will bring even greater success.

OUR PROGRAM GOALS1. Graduate well rounded young men that will be productive in society.

2. Be compliant per NCAA and university standards.3. Promote our University as an athletics department and as a university. 4. Establish a culture the community will embrace on and off the court.

5. Have a positive image and attitude.

OUR BASKETBALL GOALS1. Recruit quality student-athletes who want to graduate.

ACADEMIC COMMITMENTAs a coach, there is no doubt that the role I must take is that of an educator first. Each student-athlete that comes into our program will have their main priority be to graduate from our university. I not only want to prepare our student-athletes to graduate, but I want to help position them for success long-term. I will sit down with future student-athletes and their parents and ensure them that if they choose to complete their eligibility with our program, we will ensure they graduate.

Each member of our team will be both student and athlete. Basketball can be used to enhance the university education we are providing. I am a firm believer that “Books and Basketball” strongly coincide with one another. My promise is I will make sure the student-athlete’s education is our number one priority. When the “student” part of “student-athlete” is achieving his potential, the “athlete” can reach that potential as well.

WORK ETHIC

“The dictionary is the only place that success comes before work. Hard work is the price we must pay for success. I think you can accomplish anything if

you’re willing to pay the price.”

WORK ETHICInstill Strong Work Ethic and Dedication • In the Classroom • On the Court • On Campus • Community

I will lead by example.

I have been fortunate to coach under some very intelligent, enthusiastic, and demanding coaches.

I will never ask my co-workers or our team to do something I have not done myself…Fortunately, I have been asked and successfully accepted numerous challenges.

PhilosophyA. Head Coach has the Mentality of an Assistant Coach • No trip is too long, no city is too far and no phone call is a waste of time. • Use connections I have developed over my years of playing and coaching. • Leave nothing to chance.

B. Find OUR Type of Student-Athlete • We want to recruit a student-athlete who can be a success on and off the floor. We want someone who can achieve success in the classroom, on the court, and in the community.

C. High School is Primary Focus; Transfers and International Players are Secondary. • Developing a student-athlete over time is extremely important. It helps establish a culture. Our main priority will be to establish and maintain a culture that is always developing talent. • Have a good balance in classes so when seniors graduate we are not relying on freshman to come in and carry the team. • If the right transfer from a junior college or another university comes to our attention we must evaluate how he will fit into our culture. Transfers can enhance our program when utilized properly.

D. Build and Facilitate Relationships • We must maintain relationships through phone calls, texts, hand-written letters and in- person visits with a variety of coaches. • It is important to maintain relationships with coaches before, during, and after any recruiting interaction. We cannot have a “what have you done for me lately” attitude in recruiting.

RECRUITING: THE LIFEBLOOD OF OUR PROGRAM

Page 23: COACH BARONE’S BLUEPRINT FOR SUCCESSbrianbarone.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Brian-Barone-Basketb… · SUCCESS. THE BARONE FAMILY ... • Assisted Head Coach Brian Wardle in

RECRUITING: THE LIFEBLOOD OF OUR PROGRAME. Recruit Student-Athletes who WANT their degree. • If we are trying to convince an athlete every day to also want to be a student, we will lose that fight. • We will recruit young men who want to be more than just a basketball player.

F. NCAA Compliance • We will be NCAA and university compliant.

G. Staff Cohesiveness • Our staff will recruit as a staff. • We will identify the potential student-athletes we want as a staff. • It is important to have a cohesive unit when evaluating talent. • This will allow us to be a unified coaching staff when that talent arrives on campus.

H. Recruiting System • In order to have an effective recruiting philosophy, you must have a recruiting system that is organized, creative, and efficient. • This system will allow us to stay ahead of our competition and attract the best student- athletes to our program. • Recruiting our type of student-athlete is integral to the recruiting process. Jordan Hulls

RECRUITING: THE LIFEBLOOD OF OUR PROGRAMRecruiting SystemA. Office Organization • Computers equipped with professional recruiting software • Individual files on prospects • Organized by class and state • Strong underclassmen recruiting organization • Current information is vital, keep lists updated and current

B. Prospect Identification and Communication • Assemble initial information and send questionnaires • Identify young prospects through the following: - Internet sites - Newspapers - Recruiting services - High school and AAU coaches - Alumni and coaching contacts - Summer camps • When a questionnaire is returned, send a thank you letter to recruit. • Start phone communication ASAP. Begin to build a relationship that will set us apart. • Be the first to call. Text after the initial phone call. Anyone can text. Sell that we took the time to call. • Begin to build a relationship with parents through phone calls. Gather their email and social media information. • Staff must have a “writing schedule”- hand write to top recruits, parents, and coaches as much as possible. • Creativity is a key. You must get their attention. • Make the recruiting process fun for the prospect.

RECRUITING: THE LIFEBLOOD OF OUR PROGRAMC. Mail Out System • Mail is still crucial in recruiting and this is why: - Mail is forever, phone calls end when you hang up. - Mail contents can be reviewed. - Mail can be read anywhere. - Parents love reading mail. • Mail prospects at the proper age. - Send questionnaires to prospects. - Begin mailing prospects the day the NCAA allows. • Personalize every mail-out with a quick note - Have a system to ensure no duplications. - Keep a calendar with what goes out and when. - Mail should intensify as the recruiting process progresses. - Only meaningful mail should be sent. - Keep it simple. Must catch the eye of the prospect quickly. - Use humor. Encourage the prospect to correspond.

D. Technology Correspondence System • Gather email addresses of prospects and parents. - Everything is linked to their phones so emailing is immediate. Great way to reach working parents. • Utilize Social Media - Obtain usernames and handles of prospects and the people involved in their recruiting process. - Constantly promote our program through Twitter, Instagram, Vine, Facebook and other social media platforms. - Prospects will always check what their followers are doing. - Understand and abide by the NCAA rules pertaining to the internet and specifically social media. For example, direct messages and wall postings.

RECRUITING: THE LIFEBLOOD OF OUR PROGRAME. Contact and Evaluation Periods • Compile all game, open gym, practice, and summer schedules. • Know when coach has free periods. • If possible, be the first one there and the last one to leave. • Always call ahead to confirm date, time, location, etc. • Follow up on every visit with a hand written note and email to everyone involved. • Use our time and money wisely. Do not waste either on prospects that do not fit our plan.

F. Seasonal Approach to Recruiting • Spring: Prospect Identification - Comprise a master list of prospects and people associated with the prospects. - Establish priority lists for each class. - Add new names and keep updated. - Invite prospects to campus for unofficial visits. • Summer: Evaluation Period - Plan accordingly to see as many recruits as possible. - First period of July: see as many recruits as possible. - Second period of July: finalize evaluating and be more aggressive with priority recruits. - Third period of July: narrow list to priority recruits and see them as much as possible. - Write personal notes after seeing recruits play. - Text or call recruits, parents, and coaches within NCAA regulations. - Identify who has sincere interest in our program. - Contact top recruits to set up fall visits.

Page 27: COACH BARONE’S BLUEPRINT FOR SUCCESSbrianbarone.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Brian-Barone-Basketb… · SUCCESS. THE BARONE FAMILY ... • Assisted Head Coach Brian Wardle in

• Fall Contact Period - All members of staff should be getting to know the recruit. - Write notes, email, and/or text parents at least once a week in August. - Make timely calls with a purpose. - Text recruits periodically throughout the week to keep them engaged. - Form social media releases based upon priority recruits. - Strategize and schedule for visits by the middle of August. - Complete travel plans by late August. Home Visits - Set up home visits ASAP to get dates our program wants. - Know who will be there, prepare materials for everyone. - Always be organized: personalized academic game plan, where does he fit in, reasons why he should select school. - Show great chemistry/teamwork between coaches. - Dress code: suits or casual? - Use visual aids because players love highlights/Power Points. - Personalize everything. - Leave information at the location of the visit. - Schedule a campus visit during the home visit. - Follow up with letters to everyone involved in the visit, the set up and the organization of the visit.

Campus Visits - Set up campus visit with dates we want.

Skill Development • Recruiting is the life blood of the program when it comes to building pieces to a team, but skill development allows for our program to flourish and have sustainability. • We will focus on developing each individual on a personal level. We will be open-minded and not limit a player into working on only his strengths. • Our staff will build upon each individual’s strengths while also working on their weaknesses. • We need to recruit talented student-athletes on and off of the court, and yet, it will be essential to develop each individual into someone that they have yet to become. • Skill Development Program and Philosophy 1. Individual Skill and Fundamentals Development - If each individual gets better, the team will get better. 2. Work Ethic - Demand great mental and physical ethic in workout sessions. 3. Cardiovascular Endurance - Our team must train and work on skills at the speed we will play in games. Being conditioned during skill development is important. 4. Shots at Game Speed and Game Locations - Work on shots our team will take, based on our offense, at the speed in which they will need to take them within the offense. 5. Relationship Building - This is a great time for a coach to show our team that he cares. Spend time working on improving our student-athletes while teaching them why they are demanding the things they do. This allows the student-athlete to see the personal touch our staff will have. 6. Confidence - Confidence comes with preparation and recognition. We will work on developing skills that will translate to the game.

Team Discipline • We must hold each other accountable for doing the right thing all the time. • Be respectful of each other’s time. • Anything team related must be done at the pace and tenacity it takes to win championships.

Situational Execution • It is important for our coaching to take into account extraordinary situations. Everything is not always black and white. • Don’t be close minded while not wavering in our core beliefs. • Understand each individual student-athlete and what is the best way to push, motivate, demand, and hold them accountable.

A. Physically Attack, Defend and Rebound • Competing and toughness is a given with our team. • To succeed at a championship level we will stress that we will always ATTACK every play, practice, workout, and game. • We will never budge on our DEFENSIVE effort and concepts. We then must steal extra possessions by going to the offensive glass and finish our defensive stops by blocking out and REBOUNDING. • This will all be done in a physically tough way. Toughness is a talent that we will build our brand on.

B. Transition Basketball • Running on every possession will be demanded. • Limit how often our opponents can get their defense set against our offense by not letting them relax at the beginning of the shot clock. • Look for a good shot within 12 seconds of our “Early” offense. • Allow multiple players to push the ball up the court on offense.

C. Continuity Movement • If our “Early” offense does not result in a score we will flow into a continuity without pulling the ball out and away from the basket. • Ball movement and reversals are very important.

D. Series on Dead Ball Situations • Out of timeouts and dead ball situations, we will look at scoring on a quick hitting set out of a series of different alignments. - Horns - 2 Series - High 5

A. Having a successful program involves having a positive relationship with the media. Almost everything we do is covered and reported on by the news and social media. It is important to utilize media access to help “Build our Brand”.B. The media is always going to report. It is not always at a time in which we want to be reported on, but it is important to understand their point of view. While it is not always easy to be in front of a camera or microphone, especially after a tough performance, it is going to be the way our personali-ties are judged by the fans, the media, and the community.C. Athletics is the “front porch” of the university when it comes to public relations. It is important to work with the media appropriately.D. Utilize social media. It gives our program that personal touch.E. Work shops for our team and staff on proper media etiquette.F. TEN COMMANDMENTS OF MEDIA RELATIONS 1. Be available, be cooperative, and be on time. 2. Acknowledge a reporter’s presence when he or she approaches you. - Smile, handshake, and introduction 3. Learn to use a reporter’s first name. 4. Be honest and sincere. 5. Use your sports media relations staff for guidance. They are there to help. 6. Don’t hide, especially after a loss or tough performance. 7. Don’t stereotype all media because you may have had a bad experience with someone. 8. Be yourself. 9. Remember, the media can help you as much as you think it can hurt you. 10. Have fun.
