News from the Board.

We’re delighted with the initial response from members to the opening of our store in Smithton. Staff are continually increasing the product range on offer in the new store. During March the Board has held detailed discussions with our accountants around financial and tax planning to assist us in our strategic decision making. Rob Sadler and Donna Avery have been busy with 40th anniversary celebrations. The quality of the initial material for the special publication to commemorate the event is exciting. A big thank you to all those members who have assisted us in this process.

Unfortunately, we don’t have sufficient numbers to undertake a member’s trip to Mystery Creek Field Days this year. One of our priorities as a Board is to foster a “community of members” We’ve supported a number of member meetings and activities both in our meeting rooms at Wynyard or on farm already this year.

Autumn Pasture Management - Rob Winter Heritage Seeds

Long grass over summer? – anticipate and look for higher than average levels of corbies this autumn. Especially from mid-April through May. Go digging. About 1-2 grubs per spaded square is economical to spray: Fenitrothion (works well) or a-cypermethrin (small ones only).

Pasture renovation - Extra feed on offer this autumn? opportunity to critically examine pastures and consider advancing your perennial pasture renovation program. More detail and suggested renovation programs may be found in the new Pasture Renovation Guide at: https://issuu.com/heritageseeds/docs/pasture-renovation_guide_web

Silage and hay quality: in many cases made late, or in excessive supply. Plan to ensure that good quantities of quality pasture or other forages like rape and turnips etc., are available to compliment diet and assure animal performance. Feed testing of your fodder reserves is highly recommended.

Californian Stink Weed – a new weed to watch out for in north

west Tasmania. Infestations have been detected in the Oldina- West Calder areas

Navarretia squarrosa (Californian stinkweed) is an erect, branched, hairy, sticky

annual up to 40cm tall, with unpleasant odor especially after rain. Leaves dissected

into needle-like segments. Flowers are blue specks on green, compact, round

heads. Stinkweed grows in river-beds, road verges, dry pasture, dry arable land and

dry waste places. Control using a broad leaf herbicide such as Apparent

metsulfuron (brush off) or Garlon).

For more information refer to the Dept. of Primary Industry site at www. dpipwe.tas.gov.au or pick up a leaflet in store. Report infestations to the Regional Weed Management Officer on (03) 6165 3777 or Ken Ewington [email protected].
