Perspective

Value of electricity continues to shineHow many of us remember dropping into

a Clay Electric office with our parents and grandparents to pay the light bill? Whether you do that in person, by mail or online today, paying your monthly bill does a lot more than just keep the lights on.

Electricity keeps us connected to our modern world. Consider all the necessities and conveniences we enjoy in part because of the power lines running to the electric meter outside your home.

Count up your televisions, desktop, laptop and tablet computers, printers, your gaming consoles, music and video players and personal assistant devices. Whether they get used every day or just occasionally, the electricity that keeps them working comes from your co-op.

Have you looked around your kitchen lately? Among the coffee maker and toaster and the microwave and electric skillet, a lot of us have added several other modern small appliances.

If you’ve got a craft nook or workshop, the power tools and machines you use to cut and shape your projects are either plugged in or recharged from the outlets connecting your household wiring to Clay Electric lines.

You use electricity to run all these devices, and we still keep the lights on, use the stove, heating and air conditioning, and get hot water from tap. The good news is, even as we rely more on electricity, it’s still a bargain, especially compared to other things we pay for regularly.

Since 2011, medical care, residential rental rates and education have increased at rates of 3 percent or more per year. Butter, meat and egg costs have been up by more than one to 2 percent annually, and even bread costs have risen better than a half point on average.

Electricity costs rise about 1 percent a year, but co-ops across the country have reported a decline in average residential use per household since 2010. That means we’re doing more things with less energy.

Kilowatt hour use per household dropped by 8 percent between 2010 and 2016, slightly less than the 9 percent decline reported by all electric utilities nationwide.

When it comes to value, electricity is a clear winner, and we’re always looking for ways to work with you to make it even better. That’s why we urge energy efficiency, encourage you to look for ENERGY STAR® appliances, and promote technology, designed to give members more control over their electricity use.

Energy performance dashboards, smart thermostats and power strips, and appliance settings that shift most water heating, laundry and dishwashing outside of peak rate periods help reduce the co-op’s overall power demand. They also give you opportunities to control or even trim your monthly utility bills.

That’s good for families, couples and individuals trying to live within their budgets. And it’s going to become even more important as digital devices and internet-connected technologies become more important in our lives.

The average home now has 10 Wi-Fi connected devices. That number is expected to explode to 50 soon. Technology and the gateways that keep it working use electricity, so you’ll depend upon us for more than the power that keeps the lights on.

That’s why we’re always working to provide service that’s reliable, keep it affordable, and make it even more valuable to our members— you, your family and your neighbors.

Salt Springs District is next to receive new metersMore than half of Clay

Electric’s members have received the co-op’s new Advanced Metering Infrastructure meters.

Installations are wrapping up in the Palatka District and are scheduled to

begin this month in the Salt Springs District. The remaining sequence of districts will be Keystone Heights, Gainesville and Lake City. The Orange Park District is fully deployed.

You will receive prior

notification by mail of when to expect the meter replacement. The installers will not need, nor will they request, to enter your home. They will also not request any personal information or payment for the new meter.

Gainesville, Lake City District Office go solarThe sun is doing more than heating up

Gainesville and Lake City this summer — it’s helping to power Clay Electric’s district offices.

The co-op and its partners at Solar Impact spent time in August installing an 18-kW solar system at each office. Sixty-four panels were attached to the roofs of both buildings, and each location can generate about 135 kWh daily when the sun is shining.

The installations expand the co-op’s solar portfolio. Seventy-two solar panels were installed at the Orange Park and Palatka offices in 2018.

Clay Electric General Manager/CEO Ricky Davis said the purpose of the project is two-fold: to offset energy consumption at the offices and express the co-op’s commitment to the solar power initiative.

More Clay buildings may receive panels in the future, and the co-op is

also working with its wholesale power provider, Seminole Electric Cooperative, on solar projects.

“Our members have shown a lot of interest in embracing solar technology and educating them is a driving force for what we are doing,” Davis said. “The district offices having solar panels gives them a chance to see it up close and is a valuable educational tool to see the challenges and opportunities of incorporating solar energy.”

Clay Electric Senior Engineer Michael Jennings said public visibility was a factor in the four district offices selected to receive a solar system. The co-op also has district offices in Keystone Heights and Salt Springs.

“Their roof orientation was ideal for solar panels and they are also district offices that have a lot of foot and highway traffic,” he said. “We wanted to expose the technology to the public and

invite them to view what the system is producing.”

Jennings said an energy information website will launch soon so visitors can see how much energy the Gainesville and Lake City solar panels are generating and the positive impacts the system is having on the environment.

Clay Electric Chief Public Relations Officer Derick Thomas said he hopes the new solar systems will spur members to call with questions.

“Many of our members want to know about solar energy and what system may be right for their home, but don’t know who to ask or trust,” Thomas said. “We want members who are considering solar to contact their cooperative to receive accurate information.”

of the Guard and Reserve, a Department of Defense program, recently awarded Clay Electric a certificate of appreciation for the co-op’s support of enlisted employees.

Clay was specifically recognized for a policy change that increased the number of paid leave days from 10 to 34 when an employee must miss work for military leave or training.

While recognizing the co-op, Employee Support of the Guard and Reserve also awarded Energy Control Supervisor Steve Reynolds a Patriot Award for his support of military service members and the accommodations he makes for their service.
