COMMITTED TO OUR COMMUNITY...
In Service,
2019 WAS A YEAR OF NEW PROGRAMS AND PARTNERS AT THE GREATER VALLEY YMCA
Our Y remains committed to our community, striving to provide solutions to key local
needs not addressed. In this spirit, the Y made great strides in 2019, expanding our
programs and partnerships focused on supporting vulnerable community members, improving
services for our street neighbors and enhancing opportunities for wellness and togetherness
at the Y.
Throughout 2019, the Y worked to evolve our services. For instance, we made huge progress
addressing food insecurity: we more than doubled our free youth summer meal sites,
operating 12 sites over the summer months, serving more than 14,000 meals. Additionally,
we launched three year-round free youth supper meal programs at our Allentown, Bethlehem
and Easton/Phillipsburg Branches, ensuring kids had a source of nutritious food all year
long. Finally, we added supper meal service to our Warming Station program, serving more
than 2,450 meals during our 2019-2020 Season. We hope you’ll read on for more ways the Y
is stepping up in our community.
Additional savings from our merged structure continue to benefit the Y’s growth and
expansion. Throughout 2019, we invested more than $717,000 ($614,000 funded by grants)
in our facilities and continued gaining new investment dollars to create and expand our
programs. We finalized our over $6 million Slate Belt Expansion Project campaign, allowing
the Y to make good on our promise to the region: the addition of a pool, gymnasium and
childcare wing to our Slate Belt Branch in the coming years.
And yet with all of these accomplishments, we recognize our greatest success is in providing
teens with a safe place to be afterschool alongside mentors; offering physical activity and
connection to active older adults; surrounding the cancer survivor or diabetes patient with
support while on their journey to improved health; or teaching children the importance of
caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. In each of these moments, we know the Y is
successfully meeting our mission.
The Y is fortunate to benefit from the passion of dedicated Board Members, staff, volunteers
and partners. We know the Y’s continued growth is made possible because you stick by our
side. Thank you for your ongoing championship of the Y, as we look forward to all of the
emerging ways our Y can reaffirm our commitment to the Lehigh Valley community.

Allentown Branch Warming Station
For the second year, our Y operated the Allentown Warming
Station from November 1, 2019 through March 21, 2020. Thanks
to the generous support of our community, this year's Warming
Station season launched new programs and partnerships. A
$10,000 grant from the Downtown Allentown Community
Development Initiative Fund of the Lehigh Valley Community
Foundation helped us launch supper meal programming at the
Station on December 10, 2019, serving meals on Tuesday and
Thursday evenings. Thanks to additional funding secured from the
Charles Hoch Foundation and City Center Allentown, we expanded
our dinner meal service, serving Monday thru Thursday as of
January 27, 2020. Throughout the season, we served 2,456
meals.

Every day at the Y, we work to make our community stronger. We recognize that our mission can
only continue with the Y’s financial sustainability. We are dedicated to providing individuals,
families and children with the support and resources needed to be healthy, confident, connected

OUR FUTURE Seventh graders Ryan and Justin
sought a fun place to hangout
afterschool, while their parents sought
a safe place where they could continue
learning after school’s final bell.
Thanks to the Y’s revamped 7th Grade
Initiative Program (7GI), Ryan and
Justin now have an afterschool place to
learn, grow and thrive. 7GI students
“earn” a free Y membership by participating in programming
afterschool like recreation, volunteer projects, life skills classes,
homework help and more. The teens now spend almost every
day afterschool at the Branch or involved in 7GI projects. The
duo recently took a food pantry project even further by
coordinating a fundraising drive after the group’s volunteering
was complete. “7GI has taught me to be more responsible and I
have had a blast in the program so far” Ryan states. Justin adds, “7GI has given
me a great place to hang out afterschool with friends and staff who support me!”
Thanks to the Y’s free community needs programming like 7GI, middle schoolers
like Ryan and Justin have a place to belong, find positive mentors and learn.
7GI has

responsible
Thanks to new guidelines from the PA State Alliance of YMCAs, we relaunched our
7th Grade Initiative Program (7GI) in Fall 2019. The program is offered to
students in 6th through 8th grades, providing a free membership to the Y, as well
as access to specific programming. By participating in activities focused on
healthy living, physical fitness, job skill development, volunteerism and more,
students develop a community of support within the Y. Guided by role models who
create a safe, nurturing environment, teens develop confidence, independence,
responsibility, and teamwork through this national program. We offer 7GI at all of
our Branches, with 75 participants in the program during Fall 2019.

LEARN, GROW, THRIVE Twenty-four year-old Daniel lives with autism
spectrum disorder, which impacts the nervous
system as well as his motor and social skills.
Daniel’s mom struggled for years to find an
affordable program offering him a chance to
socialize, stay healthy and have fun. But when the
Y began its Super Shining Stars program in 2018,
Elizabeth finally found a place for her son to thrive.
Super Shining Stars is a free Y community program
serving children and adults with special needs. The
class utilizes fitness balls, drumsticks and music to aid
motor skill development, auditory processing and increase
attention span. Elizabeth reflects on Daniel’s two years in
the program stating, “He loves going to class at the Y, and
even writes about it in his journal. Since the start of the
program, Daniel’s seldom missed a class. His verbal skills
have improved, he’s made friends, and has become more
social thanks to the Y.”
Thanks to the Y’s free community needs programming, Daniel has found a
place to belong.

SUPER SHINING STARS Our Super Shining Stars Program at our Nazareth and Suburban North Branches
provides a safe and inclusive environment for children and adults with diverse
abilities . Our program utilizes fitness balls, drumsticks and music to create a
positive learning experience. Students can stand, sit or walk around the ball
while drumming in time to the music. Through the class, students develop motor
skills, auditory processing and increased attention span. Our participants
express that they look forward to coming to class each week, as it reduces
stress and brings them joy.

A NEW ME For years Lois struggled with a myriad of health
issues after becoming disabled. Most recently,
Lois was battling the effects of lymphedema
simultaneously with breast cancer. However when
Lois’s insurance company shared that she qualified
for the Y’s SilverSneakers program, her daily life
changed. Now, thanks to the Y’s aquatic classes
and programming tailored to the needs of active
older adults, Lois has become stronger, and in her
words, “more durable in everyday living
situations.” She is now in remission, has minimized
the effects of her lymphedema, and maintains a
daily schedule of visiting the Y. Lois states of her Y journey:
“My goal is to attend the Y four days a week, and the comforting
staff make it easy to do. The YMCA has put a new view in life for
me—day by day I'm building a new me!”
Thanks to the Y’s subsidized community needs programming
like SilverSneakers, Lois has found a place to belong, connect
with others and thrive.
At the Greater Valley YMCA, we are committed to meeting key needs in our
communities, addressing issues such as poverty, hunger, chronic disease and so
much more. Our Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) adopts the Centers for
Disease Control (CDC)-approved curriculum proven to prevent/delay the onset of
Type-2 diabetes. Accordingly, we launched the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention
Program at our Allentown Branch in January 2019. Through the program,
participants learn lifestyle changes to help them manage their symptoms and
decrease their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. We provide resources for our
class participants to help them reach the goal of 5-7% weight loss and engaging
in at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week. Our first cohort successfully
completed the year-long program, with all 8 participants meeting both goals,
subsequently lowering their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

TESTIMONIALS
THE Y’S COVID-19 RESPONSE
March 16 to June 30, 2020
Within the first few months of 2020, the world quickly shifted to the realities of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
As our community worked together to stop the disease’s spread and support each other, the Y quickly
pivoted our programs and services to best meet local need. This report summarizes the Greater Valley Y’s
efforts to step up as a solutions-oriented nonprofit during this extraordinary time. Along with many local
businesses and nonprofits, the Y was forced to make difficult decisions and remain agile as the situation
progressed. On March 16th, the Y closed our facilities to general membership, closing our childcare
facilities quickly after. Additionally, we made the difficult decision to furlough 96% of our staff and worked
with a team of 20 part-time employees until the beginning of May. Despite the necessity of this financial
action step, the Y maintained and increased our community programming, addressing Valley needs like
youth food insecurity, providing a warm place to sleep for our neighbors experiencing homelessness,
providing virtual preschool educational videos, and offering affordable childcare for emergency responders
and medical personnel.
In May, the Y fortunately received a PPP loan, and was able to reinstate a majority of our staff. However
since that time, the pandemic has continued to negatively impact the Y’s finances and our ability to run
certain programs. Accordingly, the organization underwent a round of layoffs in late June, focused on the
Y’s need to remain financially solvent through this crisis so we could continue to support local needs. It is
our hope that the coming months will show a safe, steady return to our previous operations, allowing the Y
to rehire staff as we are able to do so. Our July reopening, informed by CDC safety guidelines, is a positive
step towards this hope. As it has been since the first few days of our March closure, our organization’s
goal is to remain a flexible and collaborative partner as we all continue to navigate this crisis, together.
This is the first year of the food program being held in the apartment complex I live in. I am a single mom of a 4-year-old. I am thankful to the YMCA and the Whitehall Hunger Initiative program for bringing lunch to us. Money is very tight; we do not have extra money for special treats, so we enjoy the carrots and fresh fruit when we pick up our lunch.

COVID-19 RESPONSE PROGRAMS As the pandemic’s effects were felt by all those in our community, the Y
stepped up to meet local needs with the following programs:
HERE FOR YOU On Monday, March 23rd, we launched our “Here for You” Program, providing
childcare options for the children of emergency responders and medical
personnel. This program ran for eleven weeks, providing 7,200 hours of
care for the children of community heroes. While enrolled in the program,
children participated in fun activities like games, arts and crafts, sports and
more, while also completing virtual school work throughout the day. Care
was offered Monday-Friday from 6:00am to 6:00pm, and concluded with the
opening of our Summer Day Camp Program on Monday, June 8th.
FREE YOUTH AND FAMILY MEALS PROGRAM On Monday, March 16th, we took quick action to transfer our “usual” year-
round free youth supper meal program into an emergency supper meals
program. Given school closures, historic unemployment highs and
disruptions within the food supply chain, we knew it was more important
than ever before to provide free, nutritious meals throughout the Valley.
With waivers granted by the State, we were able to provide grab-and-go
supper meals throughout the region. Our program began with four sites,
quickly expanding to twelve locations by the end of June. Thanks to support
from multiple local and national partners, we were also able to add free
grab-and-go adult meal distribution to some of our locations.
Our free meal sites spanned the Valley, operating at Y Branches in addition
to providing free meals where neighbors needed them most— in public
parks, community centers and communities of high food insecurity. In
addition to distributing these free meals, the Y partnered with the USDA
Farmers to Families Food Box Program, The Common Market Mid-Atlantic,
and Operation BBQ to distribute additional fresh produce boxes and meal
boxes to families.
In this three-month period, we distributed more than 32,000 free meals to
community children who may have otherwise gone hungry, as well as more
than 6,200 free meals to local adults in need. We also distributed more
than 2,500 Farmers to Families food boxes, providing free, fresh produce to
local families.
The Y will continue our distribution of free meals through the summer
months, recognizing that as the pandemic continues and CARES Act funding
diminishes, food insecurity will continue to expand within our
neighborhoods.
13 GREATER VALLEY YMCA gv-ymca.org 13v2
CODE BLUE SHELTER We made the difficult decision to close our Allentown Branch Warming Station for the Season on
March 22nd, protecting the health and safety of our guests and staff. We continued to operate the
Station through May 8th as a Code Blue Shelter (i.e. opening on nights forecast below 32 degrees).
We opened for the remainder of the season four additional evenings, providing thirty-five beds. In
addition, and thanks to help from the City of Allentown, we opened a hygiene station behind the
Allentown Y with a porta-potty and handwashing station. We continued to offer shower services
after the Station closed on a weekly basis, as well as supper meals in coordination with Ripple
Community Center. Coordination continues with Ripple Community Center, Allentown Homelessness
Initiatives, 100-Day Challenge Group, etc. to help play a role in COVID-19 solutions for our street
neighbors.
VIRTUAL PRESCHOOL PROGRAMMING While our Childcare sites remained closed, we wanted to stay connected with our students, while
also minimizing learning loss. Accordingly, we created Virtual Preschool Programming by asking Y
teachers to record educational videos daily, which were both used by our Childcare families, as well
as offered as a free service to the public at large. During our closure, Y teachers created more than
200 educational videos with over 3,700 views. Additionally, many Early Childhood Education and
Preschool classes met via Zoom in order to socialize and keep connected.
VIRTUAL FITNESS CLASSES We launched live, virtual fitness classes the week of June 8th, supporting our members while our
facilities remained closed. These virtual classes are accessible via a Private Facebook Group, with
more than 300 members. Throughout the month of June, we offered almost 70 virtual fitness
classes in varying areas like Zumba, Yoga and classes for active older adults. We have continued
these virtual offerings as our facilities reopened, recognizing that some members are unable or
unwilling to come back to the Y at this time.
BETHLEHEM AFFORDABLE HOUSING We continued operation of our Bethlehem Affordable Housing Program, which provides 32 single-
room occupancy units for low-income neighbors, both men and women. As many of our residents
are on fixed incomes, and due to the pandemic lacked transportation for food access, our team
increased our support efforts. We performed wellness checks with all residents every-other day, as
well as worked to connect residents to resources for meals, community and wellness.
HERE FOR OUR NEIGHBORS We decided not to charge membership or Childcare fees while our facilities were closed. Knowing
that our Y serves many low-to-moderate income families, our organization decided this was “the
right thing to do” during this difficult financial period for all. Now that we have reopened, we have
begun to charge fees once again, and hope the community will continue to support us as we
supported them during this difficult time.
