    Abstract

    This article has been written in the style of popular science to exposethe exploitation of quantum mechanics in nano-structured materialsand the synergism of these two fields. A brief history of quantummechanics starting from Planck's law of black body radiation hasbeen described. The progress of nanotechnology in recent years hasprovided opportunities to fabricate and control the structure andcomposition of materials at nanoscale level optimizing theirproperties for products with higher degree of sophistication andperformances. One of the most striking effects of reducing materialsto nanoscale is dependence on size of their electronic, optical,optoelectronic, magnetic, physical, mechanical properties. In the

    areas of electronics, optoelectronics and photonics, the dependenceon size is dominantly controlled by quantum laws in materials withnanoscale features or structures. Interactions betweenelectromagnetic waves, in particular, from far infrared (IR) to visiblelight and ultraviolet, and materials are used as an example tocompare the band gap properties of bulk materials and nano-structured materials. Quantization of electronic energy, which occursin quantum dots (nanoparticles) and quantum wells as a function ofsize according to Schrdinger's wave equation, is attributed tofluorescence in nanoparticles and quantum well IR detection.

    8. Ging lng t v tia hng ngoi

    Tia hng ngoi (hng: , ngoi: ngoi) l vng sng phangoi nh sng , c bc sng di hn nh sng tri
