Once again the students of South Harrison high school participated in the
West Virginia General Summative Assessment. Testing began April 20 ;
however, preparations started back in Aug. 2015 as teachers prepared les-
son plans and activities that aligned with the Common Core Standards.
Students completed tests in English Language Arts, including an essay, as
well as the Mathematics tests. The sophomores were also required to take
a science test and this year seniors tested in math. “The results of these
tests help guide principals and teachers in designing and implementing a
curriculum and lessons that require students to use a higher level of
knowledge and understanding in their core subjects,” stated Mrs. Ash, one
of the test administrators. She also added that her students participated in
Benchmark Testing throughout the year and felt that experience helped
prepare her English students for the end of the year state-wide tests.
SHHS Presents “Annie”
By: Hailie Blair & Riley Barriger
April was show time for the musical “Annie!” The cast and crew
spent many nights and weekends for the last minute prepara-
tions. “I am exited yet nervous about the show being open so
soon; the time just flew by!” commented play director Gabriel
Rhoades. The cast seemed everything but nervous. Xavier Ev-
ans, freshman, said that playing Daddy Warbucks was a big
responsibility and he could not wait for the opening show . Eve-
rything seemed to be falling into place. Props and costumes were
perfected for the five straight days (and nights) of performances
for the public, as well as the SH student body and the local feeder
schools. The students began this endeavor with reading their
parts out of the books to now quoting any line out of any part of
the play with no hesitation. Another thing that progressed with
the play was the choreography! At the beginning, it was just peo-
ple staging with music in the background but at the end it was so
much more! Choreography was provided by freshman- Xavier
Evans and junior- Cassidy Riley who played the role of Miss
Hannigan. They each choreographed different songs but in the
end their choreography welded together to create a cohesive
show full of dancing, singing, laughing, and great acting! Open-
ing night was Fri. Apr. 22. In the end, the cast and crew knew
why they had endured all the long practices and weekend re-
hearsals! The show was a hit!

The baseball team started off this year with an amazing
record of 8-0. The Hawks finally dropped to Braxton
County and Tyler Consolidated. Freshman, Brenten Bar-
nette said, “My first year of high school baseball has been
a great experience.” Saturday, April 16 Brenten also hit
his first career homerun against Williamstown. The
Hawks have improved to a 14-4 record. They are looking
to continue the hot-streak until sections roll around.

BASEBALL
The Lady Hawks are had a rough start to their season with a
record of 7-10. The softball team looked to improve their rec-
ord over .500 with victories over their main rivals Doddridge,
Tygart’s Valley, and Gilmer County before coming to the end
of their season. “We have the learning seasons that will hope-
fully bring us to the winning season. It’s all part of the game
and you have to love the game,” said junior Sydney Lipscomb. 4
BOYS AND GIRLS TRACK
By Ian Riggleman and Christian Smith
This years’ boys and girls track teams are continuing just as they fin-
ished last year with the improvements of many personal bests from last
year beginning as soon as the first meet. Freddy Canary, sophomore,
has not lost an event this year and plans to keep his record up. “It’s nice
trying to have everybody you race try to beat you; it gives you more mo-
tivation to get better,” Canary said. Kacey Evans, sophomore, who has
improved greatly this season said “I’m very hopeful this year for the
state track meet that I might have a chance at placing high in the 300
hurdles.” The Track teams will compete again on the 19th of April at
Grafton. The first week of May the teams will compete in the Harrison
County Championship at RCB HS on Tuesday. Regionals are scheduled
in Keyser, WV on May 12. States will be held in Charleston, WV— 20
FBLA By Mrs. Ash
The Future Business Leaders of America( FBLA) chapter is officially back at South
Harrison High School under the advisement of Mrs. Sharon Cole. It is a career
organization that strives to engage students to prepare them for career or college
life. “The framework to learn business/computer skills starts with the courses of-
fered at our school,” said Cole. “Students can take BCA I & II; Desktop Publishing/
Webpage; Intro. to Business or Personal Finance,” she added. Mrs. Cole was the
FBLA adviser at her former school and she shared her knowledge and experience
with her current students. She told her classes about the State Leadership Confer-
ences held in Charleston, WV. Some of her students showed an interest in the
competition. “At the State Leadership Conferences, students compete in events
testing their business knowledge and skills. Top state winners are then eligible to
compete for national awards at the National Leadership Conference each summer.”
The following students participated in this year’s conference April 11 & 12 : Lauren
Moore– Social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc.); Haleigh Heffinger– Business
Math; Jillian Montgomery– Medical Field; Austin Daniels & Chase Taylor– Web-
design. “We had to create a webpage for a restaurant that would have a gluten and
wheat free menu, said Daniels and Taylor. The two young men placed 1st with
their web page design and it was their first year at the competition. “It was great
fun and we can’t wait until next year to participate once more,” they both stated.
Mrs. Cole along with her students plans to attend the WVBLA Fall Conference, Oct.
2016 in Flatwoods, WV.
In last month’s newsletter we covered a major project of the Construction
Systems class of building a closet for Mrs. Ash’s room. With the completition
of the project the class has gone on to other things. Senior Annie Petitto was
happy to discuss the latest projects and her views on the class. She said that
they have been working on a set of stairs for the school play “Annie” and the
class also built beds for the “orphanage” - a different setting for the play. Un-
fortunately, next year the industrial arts program will not be available at
South Harrison. “I think that the class is a good opportunity for kids to learn
how to do necessary things on their own; I hate to see it go. It is really a class
that prepares you for the real world,” Petitto added. She
and many other students have learned valuable lessons in
the class and hope for its return. “We owe a great deal to
our teacher for this year, Mr. Don Lechner. He has given
the class the opportunity to be a part of ‘hands-on’ or ‘real
-world’ performance activities,” added junior Audrie
Walker.
