When muralist Dominique Giosa (pictured above) joined the

Culture and Community in Casma project in July, 2017 she

brought a skill sought by the teachers and students of the María

Parado de Bellido School in Nivín, Peru. Dominique had helped

create several community based murals in Baton Rouge,

Louisiana while pursuing her combined Fine Arts and

Anthropology degrees from Louisiana State University.

The teachers and students in Nivín wanted a mural for their

school. After a location for the mural was selected, the next step

was to get ideas for mural content by having students create

drawings on what they enjoy about their school’s museum along

with the culture history and the modern ecosystem that

influences their daily lives.

collection, located in the

Casma Valley, surrounded

by the mountains . . .

. . . And also to place the vessels in

the natural environment where they

were found. Many of students take

pride that specific vessels on display

in the museum were donated by

their families who found them while

working in their agricultural fields.

After everyone agreed on the

imagery for the mural,

Dominique outlined shapes and

objects for the students to

develop the content with their

own concepts and creations.
