‘The love of a same-sex union is valuable’ but not marriage, Archbishop Coleridge says
BRISBANE Archbishop Mark
Coleridge has spoken out in favour
of traditional marriage, addressed
the use of “slippery language” in
the same-sex marriage debate, and
says Catholics will make up their
own minds how they vote in the
national postal survey.
Archbishop Coleridge used an
ABC TV interview to reinforce his
recent pastoral letter in which he
explained why he would be voting
no in the postal vote on same-sex
marriage.
“There are many different forms of love. There is the love of a parent for child, child for parents, sibling for
sibling, friend for friend, carer for the one cared for … but there is only one particular kind of love that we
call marriage and that is between a man and a woman,” he told ABC breakfast interviewer Michael Rowland.
“In this whole debate the thing I’ve been keen to do is try and clarify some of the language because some of
the language has been pretty slippery.
“I don’t think it is enough to say that love is love. It is about love but there is only one form of love of the
many forms of love that we call marriage and that is between a man and a woman supposedly lifelong and
supposedly open to children.”
Archbishop Coleridge was asked: “Isn’t love a primary Gospel value? The Gospel treats everybody as
equal?”
“I think it’s a primary Gospel value, but I’m not talking just as a believer,” Archbishop Coleridge said. “I am
talking about as a human being and one who is concerned not just about my own community, but for the
entire society and everyone in it, particularly those who are battling.
“It is a deeply human value. The love of a same-sex union is valuable; it’s just that it’s not marriage. See the
question is ‘is it about equality?’ Well, yes and no. Every human being is equal but not are all the same.
Human societies have always discriminated in deciding who can marry whom. I mean, parents can’t marry
their children; children can’t marry their parents …”
Archbishop Coleridge said he considered the phrase “marriage equality” a brilliant piece of marketing.
“Because everyone’s kind of for marriage, and everyone’s kind of for equality. Put them together and you
seem to have an irresistible combination,” he said.
Archbishop Mark Coleridge

“If you press the language a bit and ask a few more questions it’s not as irresistible as it first seems. I honestly
don’t think this decision is about love or equality; it’s about love and equality in a way that has to be
understood in ways that are more complex than much of the debate would suggest.”
Faced with polling which suggests a “Yes” outcome at end of the postal survey, Archbishop Coleridge said
Catholics would make their own decision in conscience.
“There will be Catholics who vote yes and Catholics who vote no,” he said.
“I have certain responsibilities as a bishop and I’m
trying to exercise those as sensitively and sensibly as I
possibly can. So whichever way the vote goes I think
the bishops are exercising their proper responsibility,
but part of our responsibility is not to make up people’s
minds.
“Catholic people can make up their mind and they will.
“My duty is to try and equip them as well as possible
not only for themselves or the Catholic Church but the
best decision for everyone in the entire community.”

The National Retreat 2017 The best thing about this
first national retreat of the
Equestrian Order of the
Holy Sepulchre in
Australia held in Sydney
was the presence of the
substitute retreat master.
Bishop Giacinto Boulos
Marcuzzo came in place of
archbishop Pierbattista
Pizzaballa the Franciscan
who was the custos of the
Holy Land and who is
now the apostolic
administrator (caretaker
government) of the Latin
patriarchate of Jerusalem
and who was unable to come on this tour of the order down under because of matters needing his presence
in the Holy Land. I do not know Archbishop Pizzaballa though have read articles he has written. Substitute
he may have been but what he gave us was by no means a second-rate fill in.
He challenged us from the opening session (there were three). Part of our living our vocation as knights and
dames of the Holy Sepulchre is to acknowledge that we are experts of the resurrection. The experience of
Jesus alive on Sundayafter watching him die on Friday is what brought what we call the Church into
existence. As experts of the resurrection we look at the world with new eyes because the world is new
following Jesus’ resurrection.
As experts we are to read the bible and read the bible and read it again. Then when we are bored with reading
read some more. The reason for this (session two) is that Jesus breaks open the word for us so we can see that
pain and suffering are not a contradiction that Jesus was the messiah. Our new eyes allow us to see victory
of life over death, light over darkness, in the midst of seeming evidence to the contrary. We are experts not
just of the resurrection but of the cross. The cross which emblazons our robes says the liberation that comes
with our acceptance of Jesus is universal – north, south, east, west (the four smaller crosses).
In the final session the very personable bishop in his early seventies, Italian born but naturalized in Israel
Jordan, fluent in six languages, with a doctorate in theology was attentive to each of us as individuals and
keen to hear our stories. He had linked us from the opening session with the mother church in Jerusalem and
reminded us that we are part of that church as well as our own local churches. As Christians we are people
of union – with God and with others. Like Mary we are to receive, live and give the one she gave birth to all
in the small worlds in which we live.
The days of retreat were a time to meet others in the order, to renew friendships and make new ones. But
above all beyond all the robes and regalia Bishop Marcuzzo led us to a deeper relationship with the one who
left the decay of a tomb for the embrace of life in its fullness.

Nazareth bids farewell to
Bishop Marcuzzo and welcomes
Fr. Kildani
NAZARETH – During a thanksgiving Mass on Saturday, September 23, 2017, the faithful bade farewell to
Bishop Boulos Marcuzzo, and welcomed their new pastor Fr. Hanna Kildani as the new Latin Patriarchal
vicar for Nazareth.
The Mass, which took place in the Basilica of the Annunciation, was presided over by Fr. Hanna Kildani in
the presence of H.B. Patriarch emeritus Michel Sabbah; Archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Apostolic
Administrator of the Latin Patriarchate; priests from different churches and hundreds of faithful who
converged from all regions of Galilee.
After spending 23 years in the service of the Christian community in Galilee, Bishop Boulos Marcuzzo begins
a new chapter in the Holy City as the Latin Patriarchal vicar of Jerusalem and Palestine. “Like Jesus, who
passed most of his life in Nazareth, you are moving to Jerusalem to continue your service there” Archbishop
Pizzaballa said in his speech during mass.
The Apostolic Administrator of the Latin
Patriarchate commended Bishop Marcuzzo’s
“presence and simplicity” in his long years of
ministry; being present in the life of all religious
communities and being an approachable person. “It
was simple to approach you and you were, and still
are, simple in your behavior,” said Archbishop
Pizzaballa.
Carrying on his ministry for the first time outside of
Jordan, Fr. Hanna Kildani on the other hand will
follow in the footsteps of his uncle similarly named,

Bishop Hanna Kildani, who served as Patriarchal vicar for Nazareth from 1964 until 1993.
“If I had to advise Fr. Hanna Kildani on his new ministry in Galilee, I would ask him to be patient, to listen
and to observe his surroundings” Bishop Marcuzzo said in an interview with the media office of the Latin
Patriarchate. “With time I’m sure he will tackle all areas of his work with proper decisions and necessary
action”.
From Nazareth, the city of the Virgin Mary’s “Fiat”, “Yes”, Archbishop Pizzaballa acknowledged the support
of all communities for both pastors and thanked them for their readiness “to accomplish the Will of God, like
Mary of Nazareth”.

A mosaic laboratory serving
refugees in Jordan In order to support Iraqi Christian
refugees in Jordan, the Latin
Patriarchate of Jerusalem has
launched a new project called “Living
Mosaic”. This project consists of forming some
refugees so that they can create
mosaics, from design to production,
using various traditional techniques
and instruments such as the hammer.
Given the rich craft history of
Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics, the
project is being carried out in the city
of Madaba. The workshop is a
positive element for refugees in many
ways. On the one hand, employment
will allow them to earn 10 Jordanian dinars each day, and to ensure daily subsistence, as well as the
opportunity to sell works to various institutions. On the other hand, the workshop is an opportunity for them
to take advantage of their idle time, learning new skills and acquiring professional knowledge.
More generally, this project enriches refugees in Jordan by giving them an occupation as well as helping
them better prepare for transfer to another country. The Latin Patriarchate finances materials such as stone,
pincers, mortar and wood fibers.
The first month of training allowed ten families to venture into the field, and in the following two months,
another ten families joined the project. Following some traditional motifs, these refugee families make
mosaics on different wooden supports, with stones mainly from Jordan.
For the parish of Al-Huson, they created a large mosaic that resembles the eastern motifs of the Dutch painter
Piet Gerrits, depicting the creation with twigs, angels, doves, trees and rivers.
The laboratory currently produces numerous mosaic
models and awaits buyers in order to support the
activity of these households. This project for refugees
aims to help them stabilize and start again, thanks to this
activity in the mosaics sector.
In the spring of 2017, twenty-one Iraqis were engaged in
the Madaba atelier daily. In addition to enhancing
individual technical skills, they found a community of
belonging and especially a meaning to give to their days.

The “thank you” of the children
of Bethlehem to the members of
the Order We are happy to publish the moving
letter that the children of this center, The
Holy Family Children’s Home, wrote to
their benefactors of the Order before the
start of summer holidays.
Dear friends and benefactors,
We have come to the end of the school
year once again which closes, as always,
with a small party enriched by the
presence the families and parents of
outside children who participated in
our playful performances, full of joy,
amused and we were very excited to receive our report cards!!!
As always it was a lot of fun, but beneath it all there remains a little bit of sadness for those who will leave
us to begin a new path of growth and learning in primary school. We too have to prepare to say goodbye
carrying with us beautiful memories that we will jealously and carefully guard in our hearts.
Many of us have never had the fortune to know a family and this makes us feel even more alone and
forgotten.
After the Crèche experience our future remains unknown even though other doors will open and welcome
us to prepare for our future.
You know dear friends, these are always the sad moments of our story: Lives that continue with chapters
that are more or less joyful, but which gift us the strength to continue and to go on despite everything. We
know we are very fragile but also very sensitive to gestures of affection, care, human warmth and tenderness.
We are, like all the other children, in need of gestures of humanity, fraternity, and friendship that have been
unfairly denied since we were born.
Dear friends, your desire to help us and your concern for us, move us... We are very grateful to you.
It is all of you who are our strength and our support... Do not forget us, do not abandon us! We carry the
experience of abandonment within us from birth...
It’s a very harsh and frustrating experience not to be repeated. Thank you for all that you have always done
with great love and that you continue to do with the same generosity that we know will not fall into a void.
We love you so much.
The little ones of the Bethlehem Crèche
A Children’s Reception Center in Bethlehem, administered by the
Daughters of Charity, received the support of the Order: the Grand
Magisterium forwarded for them by the Lieutenancy for Germany.
