Celebrating the Green IndustryThe National Awards of Landscape Excellence highlights the great work of our members within the industry. Each year, members from across the country submit their best work and compete with their peers for recognition. Members can only enter the national competition after winning within their own provincial awards program and being entered by their provincial association, so top honours through the national competition is held with much regard. Winners use this recognition as a marketing opportunity for growing their business. There are two categories in the National Awards of Landscape Excellence program; landscape construction/installation and landscape maintenance. Your provincial association may only submit three entries per category, for a total of six entrants, truly making this a select group of winners.

The Sterling is a 128 unit condominium building located in the heart of Downtown Vancouver. Each week we tend to the landscape, ensuring that it retains its well-manicured and impeccably clean appearance. There are many interesting elements within this landscape, including the use of thick granite slabs which give the entrance a sleek and clean feel, and water features at the front entrance. A shady courtyard with various benches and ledges for seating proves to be an oasis for residents and passers by, who can view the vibrant annual flower displays designed by us.

At the direction of the building owners, emphasis in recent years has been put at reducing turf areas and incorporating use of more perennial beds. The irriga-tion system was designed to blanket cover turf, shrub beds and annual beds are frequently on same irrigation zones. In shaded areas annual impatients are planted requiring frequent watering and as a result shallow rooting of shrubbery etc.

There are restrictions on using fungi-cideds and herbicides. Manual weeding of shrub beds and cultural control of ‘black knot’ on the fruit trees takes place.

MacMillan ResidenceMaintaining this property is a plea-sure every week. The gardens in the front are filled with tulips, daffodils and other bulbs every spring, with flower-ing shrubs, fruit trees and topiaries that need to be pruned, shaped and sculpted. Four large iron urns are planted with seasonal foliage four times a year, us-ing different colour schemes every year. The lawns are fertilized, aerated, seeded, rolled. Both the lawns and gardens are topdressed with triple mix every year. Working on this property reminds one of the joy that gardening brings.

Salter’s Gate Marriot Hotel

Soil was placed in the newly constructed planters, graded and plant material installed. The beds were mulched. These planters included some on the 8th floor which required a crane to position materials. The project was adjacent to an existing historical site, where four large existing trees were to be preserved. Proximity to the harbour and tall buildings had an effect on the climate considerations, such as wind and shade. Weight was a factor with the planters on the roof decks. Grading the soil in the large planters had to be done in order to hide the back of the walls without burying the trunks of the existing trees. Getting the contours right was important so that water pooled where it could do no damage after a heavy rainfall.

A trust has been established with the client where budgets and any other relevant work are discussed yearly with the client.

No problems with the exception of deer, but they are supplied with lots of bulbs.

Due to irrigation system, mowing is once a week at 3” high and it is mulch mowed. Pruning is done throughout the season depending on the plant material. The McConnell’s love the sheared look.CERTIFIED

A commercial building in a residential country setting. The green space need-ed to blend with surrounding landscape while serving as a place of business. Display gardens with a pond feature and a pondless feature which will hope-fully serve as an area for special events or attractions. The contractor had a build-a-pond day with donations for CIBC Run for the Cure. This landscape is more exposed in the winter, so plant selection was carefully considered.

A large residential site in a remote loca-tion close to Salisbury, NB. The owner is away 6-8 months of the year at his primary residence. They have gradually changed and added plant material with some redesign to the existing beds. Deer and rabbits can be a problem, so consideration was made during plant selection.

Lawn areas are quite large and require a ride-on mower to maintain. The grass type is fescue, so it requires yearly aeration and dethatching. Since the property is on a well, water conservation is very important and irrigation requirements are followed closely.

This is a small, detailed and mature property. Because of the property’s small size, the on-going challenge is keeping the plant material from over growing. Weekly pruning and thinning is a must. The clients are professionals with a keen eye for detail and a love of art and cooking. On the rear, south-facing terrace, the mandate was for privacy and visual barriers from the houses across the street. New porcelain tile surfacing, custom steel planters and a unique steel and glass water fea-ture were designed to blend seamlessly with the existing railings and architectural detailing, with planting providing visual screening and a green backdrop. The front, upper terrace, which af-fords an amazing view of English Bay, has become our clients’ favourite evening hang-out. With a full-length outdoor sectional sofa and a custom stainless steel fire pit, they are able to entertain or lounge by the fire long into the evening.

Quilchena Residence

The clients wanted a welcoming front garden entrance which would complement the con-temporary furnishings of the interior space. The new garden was designed to be a con-temporary courtyard garden, from which one can sit and watch the water wall, pond and unique plantings. Three frosted glass screens are strategically and geometrically placed to provide a visual barrier to passersby, while al-lowing light through and maintaining the green feeling of the garden colours. New concrete retaining walls were stuccoed and painted to match the house and provide various levels of planting beds.

Henderson Residence

The main criteria for this project was to create a more open feeling. A more spacious feel was afforded to the deck by adding the curved middle level, providing a sunning area as well as an observation or lookout point out over the yard, the retention lake and to the park beyond. Drainage was a problem in the past so a dry creek bed was incorporated down the side of the yard originating under the main deck. All beds were wood mulched to help reduce some of the weeding, but also keep the moisture levels up as well as adding nutrient as the mulch slowly breaks down.

Wyle Gifford Residence

The main landscape objective was to soften the view of the house and to blend it with the natural surroundings of a mountain landscape. Three large boulders were chosen as a focal point of the path lead-ing to the front door. The paths used most frequently were made of tightly laid rundle stone. Perennial use was limited to a few areas and the planting beds are all mulched. The Wyle Gifford’s were thrilled with the transformation of their property and how their mountain home ended up nestling into the landscape. CERTIFIED

Manitoba Regehr Residence – Swimming Pond

The clients wanted to convert their dugout into a deep swimming pond. They love the Whiteshell Park (Precambrian Shield wilder-ness area of Manitoba) and wanted to bring the feeling into their yard. The plantings are a mixture of native perennials and hybrid shrubs. The rocks had to be fit as tightly as possible to recreate the solid appearance of a quarry rock wall. The large waterfall has enough room to swim behind the water curtain. Thanks to the curved rock wall and the large sound box behind the large falls, the sound of cascading water remains audible throughout the house with open windows.

The owners wanted gorgeous views from every window and a pool with dramatic flair and a very modern appearance. The material chosen for most of the walls and steps are typically used in commercial or municipal applications and along road ways. The Redi-Rock blocks were a perfect fit to achieve the clean lines and modern plain look for the walls and steps. An infinite edge pool allows for a dramatic water fea-ture and spectacular view from every angle. The sheer descent was introduced to give the feeling that the water source originates from above and continues to flow down over the infinite edge to the collection pool below.

Ontario Damude Residence

The owners of this lakeside residence regu-larly entertain in their home and they wanted to create a comfortable, inviting exterior space. The deck – which was built around a mature tree – is set with patio tables and chairs for pool side entertaining and affords views of the water feature down below and Lake Ontario at a distance. An outdoor dining pavilion was designed in an Asian style that complimented the clients’ love of travel under which a Trex deck area was built, com-plete with an outdoor kitchen with granite counter top.

The owners wanted an exotic setting with surprises at every turn. They are keen garden-ers and wanted a landscape that they could spend many hours perfecting. It was also important that a seamless transition was made from one element to another and that, in spite of the property being a city lot, the effect was a natural one and wildlife friendly. A large pond with two waterfalls was designed to be the centerpiece of the yard with views from the house, deck and patio. A pathway winds around the pond, where there are many little unique discoveries to look at every time you enter the back yard.

One of the objectives was to use the exterior space as an extension to the residence. It was also important to reach a high degree of detail and qual-ity in order to support the purified and Asian style of the garden. Materials, textures, natural colors and lighting have been studied with care in the garden to achieve serenity. Everyone gained a tre-mendous amount of experience through this garden design and construction proj-ect. The team work was remarkable and everybody had the chance to experiment with new techniques.

Between Heaven and Earth

This project was a major challenge as our client wanted a French garden installed on the roof of his newly constructed garage. Looking from east to west, the garden reveals itself. Along the garden promenade, a magnificent indian stone is draped in resplendent beige tones. Thyme plant-ed into the interstices softens the angles. The stunning leaves of a meadowsweet hedge delimit this pretty passage. Two cedar benches are the perfect place for a little break where we can ad-mire the garden’s crown jewel, the Medici Ellipse fountain, which sits atop a stone semicircle.

The clients wanted an oriental flair that still main-tained a style that was not out of character with the neighbouring properties. The use of different spe-cies of pine helped create the right ambiance. Rarely used in landscaping, the granite was instrumental in determining the project’s overall character. Special attention was paid to colour and texture. Plants of varying heights bring the entire project to life. The plants were selected so that flowers would blossom throughout the summer. The arbour is made of black ornamental iron that reminds us of the granite slab tiling. A crowning water-lily ironwork with stems and blooms gives the arbour energy and suppleness.

The client was seeking help with his existing pond. After introducing the client to the Aquascape Systems, they settled on a pondless waterfall as something they really wanted. The sound of water without the maintenance of a pond.

The contractor designed and built the pondless waterfall along with a new surrounding planting. The feature enhanced the existing backyard of no lawn, but all paths and gardens surrounding a deck and gazebo. To fit the water feature into the space, a retaining wall had to be built behind the waterfalls.

Brown Vibert Project

How wonderful to be able to provide the owners of this home with a backyard paradise. A flagstone footpath leads you through a plant-ing bed of mostly ferns, hosta and Stella D’Oro Daylily to the flagstone surrounding the pool. A cabana that was custom built on site, and was certainly made to fit the area. Beside the large tree with uplighting is a large waterfall with a twisting stream leading into the pool. This has plants planted all around it and a bridge crossing over it as well, for complete access around all sides of the pool. The hot tub was installed on the flagstone patio with a pergola over top.

JK Fraser Landscape and ConstructionNew Brunswick

City of Dieppe

The landscaping of Dieppe City Hall - Library and Cul-tural Centre inlcuded a new cenotaph, a green com-mon area with 10 seating areas, shrub and perennial beds and a planter along the length of a strip mall type building. The contractor landscaped along both sides of the grand staircase, as well as the front of city hall, which has annual beds with over 2500 plants. There were 25 cast iron flower pots supplied and planted with perennials and annuals. The contractor supplied and planted 1639 perennials, 110 deciduous trees, 307 evergreen trees and shrubs, 297 deciduous shrubs and 237 ornamental grasses. They also supplied all of the planting soil, bark and mulches and constructed the garden beds.

West Van Waterfront

Originally a weed-infested and dangerously steep piece of property, it now functions as a West Coast Resort style setting. The lowest deck provides storage and access for a variety of water sports. Following an afternoon of swimming or kayaking the homeowners can make use of the shower head nestled into the rocks to wash away the salt water, then up to the main patio level to warm up around the cozy basalt fire-pit.

A strong theme was established which blends mod-ern west coast style, rugged natural topography, and the Asian-influenced style of the home. In many locations the rocky outcroppings are highlighted and used as backdrops or focal points, and further

emphasized with landscape lighting. The curvilinear hand-carved concrete patios on the main level have been formed into the existing rock outcroppings creating a strong connection with the surrounding landscape. Along the western edges, the patios have been cantilevered out towards the water allowing for a sizable increase in outdoor living space as well as allowing for the root systems of existing trees to remain untouched and once again maintain a strong connection with the surrounding landscape.

The property now has access and flow through the entire site, allowing every difficult area to be traversed, as well as multiple entertaining and outdoor living spaces.
