  • 3AUCTION TERMSThis is a public, mail bid, and internet auction conducted jointly by Classical Numismatic Group, Inc. and St. Jamess Auctions LLC. (jointly CNG). Bidding in the auction constitutes acceptance of the following terms:

    1. The property listed in this catalogue is offered for sale by CNG as agent for the Lissner Living Trust. We reserve the right to reject any bid, to determine the opening price, to set bidding incre-ments, to vary the order of the auction, to reopen bidding in the case of a dispute, to withdraw any lot, to bid on behalf of CNG, to bid on behalf of the consignor, to permit the auctioneer to bid on his own behalf, and to permit the consignor to bid on his own lots. CNG may loan or advance money to consignors or prospective bidders, and may have an interest other than commission charges in any lot. CNG may bid on its own account as an insider with information not available to the public.

    2. A buyers fee will be charged to successful bidders as follows on the hammer price: A. 21% on all lots. B. 2.5% additional fee on all live internet bids. All written bids, email bids, non-live telephone bids, live internet bid registrations, and live telephone bid registrations must be received before 5PM Eastern Time on the day before the auction begins. CNG reserves the right to change the format of www.cng-coins.com at any time.

    3. All coins are guaranteed genuine. Attribution, date, condition, and other descriptions are the opinion of the cataloguer, and no war-ranty is expressed or implied. Please note that an auction sale is not an approval sale. Lots examined prior to the sale and lots purchased by floor bidders (including bidders executing commission bids on behalf of other parties) may not be returned for any reason except lack of authenticity. All claims of misdescription and all claims of return, except claims regarding authenticity, must be made within 5 days of receipt of material. Any claim of lack of authenticity must be made in writing by the original purchaser immediately after discovery that an item is not authentic, and upon making such a claim the original purchaser must immediately return the lot to CNG in the same condi-tion as at the time of the auction. Coins that have been encapsulated (slabbed) by a grading and/or authentication service may not be returned for any reason, including authenticity, if they have been removed from the encapsulation (slab). If payment is made by credit card, rights of return are governed by these Auction Terms which supercede any rights of return promulgated by the card issuer. Estimates are intended as a guide only and not as a statement of opin-ion of value.

    4. Invoices are due and payable immediately upon receipt. Interest and late fees of 2.0% per month, or at the highest rate permit-ted by law, whichever is less, from the date of the auction, shall be payable on invoices not settled within 30 days of the auction date. Payment may be made by check or bank wire. Credit cards (Visa or MasterCard) will be accepted; there will be an extra 3% charge for payment by credit card. Payment by check must be made in US dollars ($) drawn on a US bank. All successful bidders outside North America will be charged an additional $20 fee for bank charges that are the result of international wire transfer fees; this fee will be deducted for credit card or check payment as described above. CNG may reduce or compromise any charge or fee at its discretion.

    5. Bidders not known to us must provide us with satisfactory credit references or pay a deposit as determined at CNGs discretion before bidding. Minors are not permitted to bid without written con-sent of a parent guaranteeing payment. CNG may require payment in full from any bidder prior to delivery of lots. Title does not pass until lots are paid in full. Upon receipt of lots, the buyer assumes full responsibility for loss or damage. Delivery to the buyers address of record shall constitute receipt by the buyer regardless of the identity of the person accepting delivery.

    6. Estimates are in U.S. dollars ($US) and bids must be in even dollar ($) amounts. CNG will execute mail bids on behalf of mail bidders. Subject to reserves and opening prices, mail bids will be executed at one bidding increment (approximately 10%) over the next highest bid. In the case of identical bids, the earliest bid wins. A mail bid has priority over an identical floor bid. Bid by lot number. No lots will be broken. Bidders are responsible for errors in bidding. Check your bid sheet carefully.

    7. All lots are reserved at 80% of estimate.

    8. Bidders personally guarantee payment for their successful bids, including bidders executing commission bids from other parties and bidders representing corporations or other entities. Buyers accept-ing commission bids from other parties do so at their own risk and remain responsible for payment under these Auction Terms.

    9. At the conclusion of bidding for each lot, the sale contract is concluded and the successful bidder becomes liable for immediate payment under these Auction Terms. In the event a successful bidder fails to make full payment within 30 days of the auction date, CNG reserves the right either: (a) to require payment as provided under these Auction Terms; or (b) to deem the sale incomplete and to re-auc-tion the material, in which case the successful bidder agrees to pay for the reasonable cost of such a sale and also to pay any shortfall between the re-auction price and the successful bidders purchase price. CNG reserves all rights that it is entitled to under the Pennsylvania Uniform Commercial Code, including the right to offset any sums due from a successful bidder against any future consignment or purchase or mon-ies or goods in possession of CNG.

    10. Sales tax, postage, handling and insurance are the responsibil-ity of the buyer and are added to all invoices where appropriate. For buyers in the European Union, CNG may import lots into the United Kingdom prior to shipment and charge buyers the import Value Added Tax. On any tax not paid by the purchaser that should have been paid, even if not invoiced by CNG, the purchaser agrees to pay the same on demand together with any interest or penalty that may be assessed. It is the responsibility of the buyer to comply with foreign customs and other regulations.

    11. Prices realized are published after the sale and are mailed to all successful bidders. Prices realized are also posted after the sale on CNGs web site: www.cngcoins.com

    12. Bidders hereby waive any claim for incidental, consequential or exemplary damages arising from this auction. The sole remedy that any participant in the auction shall have for any claim or controversy arising out of the auction shall be a refund, without interest, of all or part of the purchase price paid by the participant.

    13. All rights granted by CNG or otherwise available to bidders and purchasers, under these Auction Terms or otherwise, are personal and may not be assigned or transferred to any other person or entity, whether by operation of law or otherwise. No third party may rely on any benefit or right conferred by these Auction Terms. Bidders acting as agents must disclose the agency in writing to CNG prior to the auc-tion; otherwise rights are limited to the agent and are not transferable to the undisclosed principal.

    14. Any dispute regarding this auction shall be governed by the laws of Pennsylvania and shall be adjudicated only by the Lancaster County Court of Common Pleas or the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania; all bidders submit themselves to the personal jurisdiction of these courts for this purpose, consent to service of process by registered or certified mail, and waive any con-trary provisions of Articles 14 or 15 of the French Civil Code and any similar provisions in any jurisdiction. In any dispute regarding this auction, the prevailing party shall be entitled to recover its reasonable costs and attorney fees.

  • 5The Sunday Morning Get TogetherIn the 1970s, a group of numismatic friends decided to get together for a Sunday breakfast. We started at Factors Deli and then branched out to other venues on the west side of Los Angeles and West San Fernando Valley. Some forty years later, we are still at it, Sundays at 9:30 AM.

The founding members, all committed numismatists, were Richard Dick Lissner, Irving Irv Goodman, and M. Louis Mark Teller. Within a year, we were joined by Dr. Lawrence Larry Adams, a prominent Los Angeles physician. Over the years, such illustrious collectors as Dr. Osmund Chan, Dr. Robert Hesselgesser, and Paul Covey from San Antonio often appeared at the table. Wives, children, and grandchildren were often guests. Later, Dr. Vladimir Golovchinsky became a member of the group. Victor England sometimes joined the group when traveling through the area. Vibrant numismatic conversation was always in the forefront, along with a wonderful show-and-tell of exceptional numismatic specimens.

Politics, world news, and other current events often led to vigorous conversation. The full spectrum of political thought was represented and explored. We were good friends and listened and debated with courtesy. We also spoke of personal matters. We were a close-knit group of cronies.

As we aged, our meetings were still vibrant but some members could not attend due to illness or other issues.

Recently, Dick Lissner passed away at the age of 87. Losing him was a devastating loss for us all. In addition to being a wonderful man, he was one of the great coin collectors in Los Angeles and worldwide. His collection, of impeccable quality, encompassed all world type coins of the 19th and 20th centuries, with the exceptions of Canada and the United States. Should a beautiful 17th or 18th century coin come along, he would add it to the collection.

His numismatic start was as a 10-year-old boy collecting Lincoln cents, and he once received a rare 1914-D in change on a Los Angeles street trolley. While in high school, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps cadet program, and after graduating from high school, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943. Upon returning home after the war, he attended Stanford University, and then graduated Cum Laude from University of California, Berkeley. After being accepted at Harvard, Yale, and other fine institutions of learning, he chose to attend Yale where he received his law degree. He married his wife Judy in 1952, and they lived in the Los Angeles community of Brentwood, where they raised their four children.

Dicks family were gold rush arrivals in California with an impressive background and historyfrom a Grand Rabbi in Lisse, Poland, to a great grandfather who left home at a tender age and settled in Massachusetts. His great grandfather then came to California by ship, crossing the Isthmus of Panama on foot before continuing on by ship to San Francisco. While in San Francisco, he became a successful businessman, marrying the daughter of another successful businessman. Her father was one of the original founders of the first professional baseball team in Oakland (the Oakland Oaks, established in 1879).

Coming from a successful business family, Dicks grandfather, Meyer Lissner was a successful attorney and was deeply immersed in politics and its inner workings. Dick was proud of the letters he inherited that had been exchanged by his grandfather and President Theodore Roosevelt. As a political reformer, Meyer was greatly at odds with the very conservative Los Angeles Times. The Times published several seemingly anti-Semitic cartoons of Meyer and their mutual animosity grew. Meyer was deeply immersed in California politics and was the campaign chairman of Senator Hiram Johnson, a Republican Senator from California from 1917 to 1945. Meyer Lissner died in 1930. During WWII, a U.S. Liberty ship was named for the late Meyer Lissner.

Richards father was an assistant United States attorney in Los Angeles in the 1920s before joining the L.A. law firm of Loeb and Loeb, where he became a full partner. After practicing law for a period of time, Dick, who never cared for the legal profession, managed family properties in downtown Los Angeles. At one time, his maternal grandfather, Isidor Eisner, owned the largest number of high-rise buildings in the downtown area of Los Angeles. Most are still in existence.

Although Dick came from an affluent and highly connected family in Los Angeles, he always remained very down to earth in a friendly, outgoing way. He was, as his ancestors, very philanthropic. This writers favorite memory is the time Dick left a theater in Santa Monica, California and saw a homeless man with no shoes. He promptly took off his own shoes and gave them to the man. He was always discreet and private and rarely spoke of his philanthropy.

  • 6His four children, now grown, were given top-notch educations both in the United States and Europe. He believed that education was the finest gift that could be given to ones offspring. The proceeds of the sale of his excellent Russian collection (sold in Triton X, January 2007) were given to his 11 grandchildren to further their education. As a linguist and scholar of history, the numismatic world was comfortable for him. His numismatic endeavors are legendary. He only wanted the finest specimens to add to his ever-growing collection. He amassed amazing type collections of France, Scandinavia, the Low Countries, Italy, and the Balkan States. He also collected crowns of the world. He was especially fond of Spain and the New World, and his collection of South American coins is known by dealers and collectors worldwide.

This August 1st and 2nd his collection will be offered for sale in the Chicago area before the annual ANA summer convention. It will be the finest sale of its type in 50 years.

We will miss Dicky Boy, but his legacy will live on with his family and friends. His coins will find new homes. Richard Lissner always said; We are only numismatic caretakers. He was right and these coins will live on as his numismatic legacy.

Thank you Dick, we miss you.

    Mark Teller, April 2014

    Acknowledgements from the Lissner FamilyNGC

We would especially like to thank Ken Krah and Jay Turner for their exceptional help in grading the entire Lissner Collection. It was a daunting task due to its large number of items and the rarity of a great number of specimens. They truly brought home the fact that NGC is the prime source to grade world coins. Their speed and accuracy is without equal in the industry.

    Wings

We would like to thank Lance Tschor, founder of Wings, for his help and cooperation in determining which coins should receive wings approval. The mission statement of Wings is to determine whether a coin is premium quality for the assigned grade. His help and enthusiasm has definitely given an added gravitas to the Lissner Collection.

    Special Thanks

We would also like to give special thanks to the people at CNG, St. Jamess Auctions, and M. Louis Teller Company who helped produce, write, and prepare this auction catalogue. Special thanks to Lisa Reschke at M. Louis Teller for her unceasing help and long hours cataloguing and preparing these coins for sale. I would also like to thank the staff at CNG, especially Bill Dalzell, Bradley Nelson, Scott VanHorn, and Travis Markel. Their professionalism and devotion to preparing the final product was without equal. We would also like to thank Ruth Mueller, Lisa Norfolk, and Joel Elias of St. Jamess Auctions for their help with the technical preparation of the auction.

Richard was also very fond of Glen Onishi and Stephen Harvey who have been long time associates of Superior and the Goldbergs.

A Word of Thanks from Mark Teller Victor England, Eric McFadden, Stephen Fenton, Augusto Wing, and I would like to express our deep thanks to the Lissner family for their entrusting us with the task of selling this fabulous collection of world type sets and crowns. It is truly a highlight of any dealer or auction houses career to receive such a property to sell. The familys unceasing cooperation and kindness has made this whole task truly exciting and rewarding. Special thanks to Dean Lissner, who, acting as a liaison for his mother, Judy, and siblings, Lauren, Kim, and Craig, gave us his time and attention in providing information and answering questions without complaint while maintaining a very busy work schedule.

Victor, Gus (my business partner), and I have spent the last six or seven months preparing the coins for this two day event. Stephen has logged trips to the Orient, United States, and numerous shows in Europe tirelessly promoting the sale.

Dick spent the better half of the 20th Century and the first decade of the 21st assembling this awesome collection. We hope you, as collectors and participants, are successful in this once-in-a-lifetime sale.

A Note From Victor EnglandLate last year, when the three companies agreed to this undertaking, none of us had any idea of the work involved. With an established cataloguing system in place at CNG, we agreed to undertake the photography and catalogue production. Mark agreed to catalogue the sale using our system. (He really underestimated what was involved and is finally, after six months of work, just getting back to his own business. It is a good thing Gus and Lisa were there to lend a hand.) Stephen has tirelessly covered many miles, visiting conventions in the Orient, United States, and Europe handing out flyers and spreading the word about the sale.

The sheer process of moving almost three thousands coins through NGC in a timely manner was handled with few issues once we streamlined a submission system that worked for both of us. At the Lissner familys request, all of the coins have been encapsulated with the exception of a small handful that were not acceptable as types for submission. All of the coins were photographed before submission except for a few that Dick had purchased already encapsulated. I want to thank Travis for the time he spent on getting the photographs to a high standard. I expect a number of these will end up being used in references down the line.

A word on the grading, comments, the use of population reports, and the words Finest Known is necessary. Mark con-sulted the population reports for NGC in arriving at his statements about the Finest Known and Highest Graded specimens.

In reading the comments following the NGC grade, Mark, through adventurous use of the thesaurus, has added his feelings to the coins. Even more enjoyable are the citations to dealers and collectors of the past from whom Dick purchased the coins. This brought back memories for mereminding me of characters from the past.

My own special thanks go out to Ken Krah for taking the time to oversee the encapsulation process. He and I started in busi-ness at much the same time back in the mid 1970s. Each of us ended up pursuing different courses in our careers. I always respected Kens dedication to numismatics, and I think he has been largely responsible for much of NGCs success in the world coin field.

The Wings Approved was something new for me. After working closely with Lance Tschor, I believe youll find the coins that have been awarded their wings to be an attractive and desirable group of coins. The presentation for these coins took a little extra work, but I think the effort was worth the time.

Having very successfully sold Dicks Russian collection a few years ago, I have great expectations for this sale as the quality of the material is exceptional.

Henry Grunthals Ceylonese Stella Manufactured by Frank A. Lapa

    99. CEYLON (SRI LANKA), Colonial. British. George III. 1760-1820. Fantasy AV 4 Rixdollar (32mm, 15.53 g, 6h). Manufactured by Frank A. Lapa. Dated 1812 (Struck before May 1972). KM X7. EF, minor flaw in obverse field. Ten examples in this metal reported. LOT SOLD AS IS. NO RETURNS. ($500)In 1977, the first example of this previously unknown gold 4 Rixdollar pattern appeared in the offices of Abraham Kosoff (1912-1983), a well-known rare coin dealer. While examples of the 1 and 2 Rixdollar patterns commissioned by Ceylon in 1812 and struck from dies made by Thomas Wyon, Jr. at the Royal Mint in London already were known (see lots 97 and 98 above), the appearance of this particular coin caused a stir as to its authenticity. Henry Grunthal (1905-2001), then curator of European and modern coins at the American Numismatic Society and the one who researched the coin, considered the piece to be authentic; he went so far as to declare the gold 4 Rixdollar the Ceylonese Stella, a reference to the famous gold US four dollar pattern of Charles E. Barber (A. Kosoff, Authorities Authenticate Ceylon Pattern Four-Rix Dollar In Gold, Coin World [17 May 1972], p. 2). Less, than a month later, however, Coin World reported that the gold 4 Rixdollar pattern was found to be a modern fantasy of which 75 pieces in a variety of metals were reportedly produced (Recent Findings Reveal Coin Modern Fabrication, Coin World [7 June 1972], p. 46). Although the manufacturer of this coin was unknown at the time, it was later discovered that it was produced by the coin dealer and author, Frank A. Lapa (1931-1995), a known coin counterfeiter (The E-Sylum, Volume 6, Number 1 (5 January 2003, Article 12 [http://coinbooks.org/esylum_v06n01a12.html]) and an individual with a notorious personal history (The E-Sylum, Volume 9, Number 31 (30 July 2006, Article 32 [http://www.coinbooks.com/esylum_v09n31a32.html]).

Highest Graded 1867 Hong Kong Dollar

    114. CHINA, Foreign Enclaves. Hong Kong. Victoria. Queen of Great Britain, 1842-1901. AR Dollar (38mm, 26.91 g, 6h). Hong Kong mint. Dated 1867. KM 10. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 64 WINGS APPROVED. Choice brilliant uncirculated with a faint hint of violet patina. Extremely rare. Highest graded for the date and none graded higher for the type. ($20,000)Purchased from Jess Peters, April 1970.

Hong Kong lies off the Pearl River Delta in southeast China and was originally ceded to the British in the Treaty of Nanking, ending the First Opium War. The acquisition was considered frivolous by some in Parliament, who called it a barren rock, and saw in it little economic opportunity. Yet the natural deep harbor and advantageous geographical position allowed the region and the city to thrive, with additional territories soon being added. Eventually, the whole of the British territory of Hong Kong was reorganized into a 98-year lease that concluded with the return of the area to Chinese control in 1996.
