This is a public and mail bid auction conducted by Class ica l N u m i s m a t i c Auct ions , L t d . a division of Classical Numismatic Group, Inc.and the fol lowing terms and conditions should be read by all interested parties before bidding in this sale.

1. The property listed in this catalog is offered for sale by CNA, Ltd. as agents for var-ious owners and other consignors. We reserve the right to withdraw any lot before the close of the sale.

2 . There is a 10% buyer's fee that will be added to all invoices at the close of the sale.

3 . All coins are guaranteed genuine and as described based on the most current information available to the cataloguer. Grading is a subjective art. Every effort has been made to be conservative in our grading. Please note that an auction sale is not an approval sale. Lots examined prior to the sale may not be returned for any reason except authent ic i ty .

4 . Terms are for cash, with invoices being due and payable immediately upon receipt. Payment by check must be made in US funds and drawn on a United States bank. Visa and Mastercard may be used to pay your bill. However, a 3.5% surcharge is made for the use of your credit card. (Our cost from the bank.).

5 . Bidders not known to us must provide us with satisfactory credit references. Minors are forbidden from bidding without a parent's signature on the bid sheet.

6 . Bid in even dollar amounts. Mail Bidder Protect ion. You may submit bids with confidence. Where competition permits, your bids will be executed at 10% over the next highest bid. Please note, that most bids below estimate are rarely reduced, due to heavy competition. If you bid over estimate, chances are that your bids will be reduced. In the case of tie bids - the bid received earliest wins. Bid by lot number. No lots will be broken.

7 . A word on R e s e r v e s . If a lot is reserved, it will not be in excess of the estimate. However, please note that bids that are below 60% of the estimate have little or no chance of winning, or being executed. Check your bid sheets carefully. The seller cannot assume responsibility for errors made by bidders.

8 . Sales tax and postage are added to all invoices where appropriate.

9 . Prices Realized are published shortly after the sale and mailed to all bidders who have participated in the sale.

(500) The types reveal the importance of the Corinthian stater as an international trade coin in the fourth century BC. Syracuse struck this piece for trade with the eastern Greek world.

IV-2118(C0rinth) , SNG Delepierre-1912(C0rinth) . cf. SNG Ashmolean 2133-2135 for other drachms attributed to Sicily. Good VF. Rare? (400) The reverse head would seem to point to a Sicilian or Siculo-Punic origin, and one Syracusan stater, SNG Lloyd-1441, does carry the koppa mark of Corinth. Further research is indicated.

This type refers to the Greek legend of the Seven Against Thebes. Kapaneus, descendant of Proetus - King of Argos, was one of the seven commanders who agreed to help Polynices recover his throne from his brother. All but one of the seven died in the ensuing seige. Kapaneus was struck down by Zeus while boasting that even the Gods could not prevent him from scaling the walls. COCLES means "deprived of one eye" and was the surname of the Horatia gens after its legendary hero, Horatia Cocles, who had prevented the Etrurian forces under King Porsena from entering Rome. The female head is supposed to be that of one Horatia, the betrothed of one of the Curiatii (an ancient gens of which three brothers fought against three of the Horatii). In any event, modern numismatists have made the assumption that this coin was originally struck by a descendant of that family which is speculation as Michael Crawford notes in his work.
