COATED CAPS

COATED CAPS

CMW offers a complete line of titanium coated weldingelectrode caps that can reduce or eliminate some of theproblems that are associated with welding coated steels.

The titanium infused electrode reduces sticking problemsencountered when welding coated steels. The titaniuminfusion also increases electrode life, reduces power con-sumption, and reduces surface expulsion.

A TiCap™ electrode is a welding cap that has received atitanium carbide coating on its welding face through apatented infusion process.

The patented process is a unique method of surface coat-ing materials by causing an inter-diffusion of the atomsbetween the underlying base material and the materialbeing applied. It is a full chemical bond. The result is acoating that will not peel or dissociate itself from the basematerial.

The coating maintains the resistance at the "interfacepoint" (the point between the sheets of steel where theactual welding occurs). The titanium weld face detersadherence to any welding surface. Because of this, there isno build up of zinc on the weld face. The elimination of thezinc build-up keeps the contact resistance low, allowinginterface resistance (resistance at the interface point) toremain high. Therefore, there is no need to add excessiveamounts of current to compensate for decreased heat atthe interface point. Ultimately, a decrease in initial currentsettings and stepper settings can result in energy savings.

Titanium Carbide is a very hard substance in relation toother metals. Impregnating the surface of the welding tipwith this hard material substantially reduces the mush-rooming effect caused by high welding pressure on the tip. When welding coated steel with a standard electrode, theelectrode will form brass on its weld face. This brass for-mation causes rapid mushrooming and pitting of the elec-trode face, leading to shortened electrode life. Because noalloying occurs, the TiCap™ resists this erosion andextends electrode life.

TiCap™ electrodes are extremely flexible in that they willproduce consistent, quality welds at both low and high cur-rent ranges. TiCap™ electrodes will give you the low cur-rent ranges and weld life of a Cu-Cr electrode and the highcurrent ranges and stick resistant properties of anELKALOYH 20 material.

Electric spark expulsion occurs in resistance welding dueto excess capacity generated in the welding circuit afterthe welding sequence is complete and the electrodes sep-arate. The spark consists of a temperature of 2200 C thatin a conventional electrode case will arc away smallamounts of the electrode. In the case of TiCap™ elec-trodes, the titanium car-bide is resistant to 2500C and higher, creating aprotection zone. Sincethe titanium coatinginsulates the copperbase alloy and offers aprotection zone, toxicfumes that would other-wise be released duringexpulsion are greatlyreduced.

Any standard nose configuration shown on pages 8 and11 can be ordered as a TiCap™ electrode by adding a "C"suffix to the CMW standard part number. Example:MA25C.

BENEFITS:

P TiCap™ electrodes resist sticking to all coated

steels.

P TiCap™ electrodes are competitively priced with

other stick resistant caps on the market.

P They last longer. The reduced mushrooming effect

provides a service life several times longer than a

standard non-coated electrode. This results in less

welder downtime and greater productivity.

P Lower energy consumption due to running at lower

current settings.

P Reduced expulsion of toxic fumes creating a safer

work environment.
