CMS TRACKER STATUS REPORT
Dimitri Pandoulas CMS Week 03.12.01 1
Pixel Workshop held at CERN , Nov. 30 ‘01
Conclusions on the Layout of the Pixel System (PRELIM) :
•For 2 pixel hits, physics potential depends only slightly on pixel layout
•For 3 pixel hits: Important CPU reduction on trigger level in finding track segments
•3 pixel hits imply three Barrel layers
•Differences for two or three forward disks < 10%
Two configurations relevant: B2D1 and B3D2Dimitri Pandoulas CMS Week 03.12.01 1A

Silicon Strip Modules
Sensors• Preseries (for Milestone 200) in hand and qualified • Contract with Hamamatsu signed• Contract with ST to be signed shortly (some technical details finalized)
• “Express Line” TOB modules (for system test) built and qualified in test beam
• First TEC modules built
Module components for M200(Sensors, frames, Pitch Adapters, Kapton strips) : readyFE Hybrids : available shortly
Dimitri Pandoulas CMS Week 03.12.01 6
Express Line :20 (TOB) hybrids assembled Design of hybrid qualified
• Prototypes:– Two companies selected
• Dorazil, Berlin(D) for TOB/TEC • Mipot, Cormons (I) for TIB/TID
– Problems in substrate production due to required small feature size (120 m) of layout.
– Delivery now Dec 2001 / Jan 2002
Industrial Production (for 200 modules: M200)
Dorazil (TOB / TEC)– All 150 substrates produced. Samples inspected by us: excellent quality!– 5 assembled hybrids shipped on 30.11.01– If ok, remaining 150 expected before 15.12.01
• Preliminary Conclusion by Dorazil:– The present high density layout with very small features (120m) is not suited for
reliable and cost effective mass production!– Modifications proposed!
FE-Hybrids
Dimitri Pandoulas CMS Week 03.12.01 7
– Long time needed to arrive at a working procedure
– First 10 substrates have been produced in w47 (Nov. 19)
– Will be sent to Strasbourg for inspection in w48 (Nov.26)
– If ok, 50 substrates will be produced
MIPOT (TIB)
FE-Hybrids (cont’d)
• Large-Scale Production:– Layout density needs to be revised
=> use packaged chips (design already available)
– Change of TIB geometry (significant!!!) => need new prototype
– Tendering in spring 2002

• Pointing• Good r-phi overlap• Uses same sensors as TEC Rings 1-3• Non hermetic (each disk is about 5% inefficient;)
• TID Layout #2 (Sept. ‘01)
Impact on the performance under study
For hermeticity:
Larger Ring 1 Sensor
R in : - 3.7mm
R out : +21.9mm
H : +23.4mm
New Mask Needed(+120 kCHF)
To be decided this

Project progressing well
• Procurement of mechanical structures underway
• Module Production imminent (starting with M200)
Project is on budget•Main concern: the availability of funds (7.4 MCHF missing Main concern: the availability of funds (7.4 MCHF missing and 1.9 MCHF not yet accorded) and 1.9 MCHF not yet accorded)
•No contingency for placing the remaining contracts No contingency for placing the remaining contracts for module production for module production
Present schedule aggressive (Tracker in CMS by spring 2006)
• Less risks on a more relaxed schedule
