happens on a daily basis. The AP students work fiercely to get their masterpieces done, while the beginners

learn build a solid base. Whether the work is astounding for the artist’s skill level or just plain jaw dropping (like James Young’s Beignet’s, below), the art surpasses any

expectation. “

AP Artist Profile - Mason Nabors

Mason Nabors uses incredibly accurate Batik skills to gives this guitarist a dream-like realism . The colors here are nothing short of

perfect. Batik“ ”


Senior and AP artist Ashley Elder uses color brilliantly on this squid. Look closely at the

Senior Taylor Morris produced a fabulously accurate (And uniquely colored) Batik

of the 60’s fashion starTwiggy. Batik“ ”


Mason Nabors is a truly remarkable Magnet artist. His art education began at South Highlands

Elementary, and the early start likely made a world of difference. On top of that, he has inherited art skills from

his father. His two brothers also took art classes until middle school, but he was the first to take it to the next level in high school. Mason has built up a treasure trove

of awards, starting with state and national recognition as early as middle school. High school has offered him a

chance to expand his arsenal of techniques and perfect a signature style. He participates in Project Talent, a district-wide advanced art class held at Magnet.Mason's AP concentration work is title "Louisiana

Architecture," and he plans to turn this into a career as an architect. He will enroll in Louisiana Tech next fall and

follow the intensive five-year architecture degree program. His passion for complex problem solving and

the principles of design make architecture a clear career choice. We wish him good luck!

AP Artist Profile - James Young

Part of his AP Concentration, “Louisiana Foods,” James Young has painted yet another

masterpiece for his portfolio. Acyrilic “ ”


This still life by Senior Ashley Elder is from her time as a Project Talent student/artist

at Magnet. Colored Pencil“ ”


James Young is only a high school junior, but he has already solidified his place in the history of great Magnet artists. At a young age, James began his art education

under Mrs. Marabella Dunn. Over the years, she taught him to eloquently express his imagination through the

universal language of art. Now, under the additional guidance of Mrs. Alexander, James produces photo-quality

pieces that are simply mind-blowing. He has earned awards from Artbreak, the Congressional Art Competition, and Katfish for Kids (he was given a giant catfish sculpture

to paint with his unique po-boy design and have it exhibited downtown). His favorite subject to paint is food, and his AP concentration reflects that. His tasty beignets (Set 1 Cover), pancakes (Above), and fried chicken (See Right) call up a sensation that few chefs can muster. His resume goes beyond art. Next year, James will work in a laboratory at LSU Medical Center performing research through the S.M.A.R.T. program. On top of that he plays

piano and speaks Spanish proficiently. Whether it is art or science, James Young certainly has a bright future ahead!

AP Artist Profile - Ashley Elder

Senior Ashley Elder had the unusual artistic muse inspire her early work. She says that the popular japanese cartoon

character Sailor Moon got her into art. After that, she began to pick up the techniques and skills from the variety of art

teachers that she has had over the years. This year, she went with a group of Magnet artists to the YACA Art Convention held in Shreveport. Her future plans include Art

School, but she will attend LSUS next fall to get the basic college credits out of the way. We wish her luck!

Junior Jessie Mahon moved to Magnet this year from Houston, completing her 9th move in her lifetime. Her art uses a

very bold wavy line design style which creates volume and rhythmic movement. When she began painting, her inspiration was musical (her friend would play a song and ask her to paint

to it). Her concentration is titled “Beauty of the Human Body.” (see left) She plans to double major in Art & Theater at either TCU or SMU. Look for more of her work in next year’s

magazine!

The youth also get involved. Some paint the cartoon characters that they adore (above), while others paint unique self-portraits for the "Wall of

Fame" (below).

Art in the Community - FWCC Arts In Medicine

Arts in Medicine at Feist Weiller Cancer Center uses the healing power of art to help relieve patient stress as they undergo treatment. The unexpected outcome of the project has been the quality of the finished pieces. Paintings by master artists, such as

Van Gogh, are split into sections and enlarged (below) for each patient to "paint-by-numbers" with the help

of the coordinating artist.

Ellen Buller has art running through her veins. Her aunt is a professional painter and her mother is an art instructor. Her

heritage has helped her win awards at Artbreak, at the South's largest students arts festival, and the Congressional Art

Competition. Her favorite creation is her watercolor landscape of the Ozark Mountains (above, middle). Although she does not

see art as her future career, Ellen enjoys the sense of accomplishment that comes from producing her work.
