Discussions and Key drivers

• The reaction to Chaos• The whole Asia Pacific region has suffered

overwhelming chaos in the past 12 months. Be it floods, tsunamis, earth quakes, nuclear meltdowns and political upheavals.

• People are overloaded with grief, stress, unease. Many are shocked at their governments’ inability to cope under pressure and a lack of transparency.

• The counter-reaction to Chaos in the region is MINDFULLNESS

• Charity has crossed borders and language. • Created increased sense of community far beyond local

villages and towns.• Expressions of community spirit are often silent

messages of giving through exchanges in produce, food, clothing and more.

• Asians are embracing healing, finding friendships through adversity, reaching out through community based cooperation, not organized through governments.

• School children are encouraged to use sessions of meditation, as school grades see resulting marked improvements.

• People turn to natural healing through Human senses of Taste, Smell and Touch.

Page 8: CMG Asia Pacific Report Bangkok Thailand February 2012 ...

Finding the Middle Ground

• Trends move to a bridge between Chaos and Mindfulness will inspire new ideas and inspirations.

• Hawaiian imagery is growing ever stronger in the Japanese market.

• The large Japanese ethnic populations in South America are influencing design.

• China’s economic power spreads around the globe and influences local cultures.

• All through the region, “postcard” images are emerging, fast forward to Paris, anything French and the London Olympics will spawn lasting impressions of all things British. More forward design will reflect the Latin American World Cup and Olympics also.

• Central American region influences crafts with Mola reverse quilt effects on textiles, fashion and furnishing.

• Asia sees influence of African design and imagery. Elephants, monkeys etc.

• Setting a global trend, consumers set to add more strong accents colours to their homes with smaller ticket items.

• Indonesia, an Asian economy growing well, has consumers who are much more adventurous with colour.

• Global movie trends are influencing other markets. • Black and white movies, the silent movie and retro design.• Retro design hints at less stress and less technology.

Page 9: CMG Asia Pacific Report Bangkok Thailand February 2012 ...

Global patchwork

• Ethnic shifts• Job seekers going

east from the West.• Patchwork styling

shifts to table top ceramics.

• Re using and recycle fabrics create new fashion bags and clothing.

• Paris and postcard imagery.

Imagery, World Cup. Olympic and Mola design.

Page 12: CMG Asia Pacific Report Bangkok Thailand February 2012 ...

• Black and white gains momentum and the new basis for colour.

Page 13: CMG Asia Pacific Report Bangkok Thailand February 2012 ...

Miniaturization and retail shifts.

• Miniaturization, both real and imaginary. Mini plants under development.

• Mini chocolates, bite sized, advertised with mini kitchens and dolls’ houses.

• Shopping on line is causing shifts in retail, including on one hand job losses in the retail sector and opening of opportunities for small and / or on - line businesses. Shift to Self reliance.

Page 14: CMG Asia Pacific Report Bangkok Thailand February 2012 ...

Choice

• Consumers increasingly even more aware of environment.

• Demand for healthy food increases.• Local farmers markets expanding.• UK “ The peoples supermarket” inspires more localized

food production and consumption, beyond UK’s shores.

• Allotment gardening, made popular in Europe spreads to Asian region with roof top urban spaces harnessed for food production and local consumption.

• Counter- Reaction to Big Business control of community, local government , and consumers monthly bills.

• Global Match and Patch as cultures mix, blend and re emerge.

• Economic migration as job seekers change countries to seek better paid work, or even work at all. New is the migration from WEST to EAST

• Demand for Chinese language speakers from all nationalities as the power of China continues.

• What will be the language of global communication in 20 years?

• Chinese Consumers prefer goods made OUTSIDE China: example, Hong Kong flooded with Brand name mega stores catering to Chinese cashed up tourists, trusting in the originality of the goods and avoiding fakes and copies as International Big Brands cash in on wave of demand for items made in Europe, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand Etc.

Page 15: CMG Asia Pacific Report Bangkok Thailand February 2012 ...

Lifestyle Elements

• Lifestyle• Young entrepreneurs leaving university with few job

opportunities, are starting their own businesses. They have control of their own destiny.

• Belief in long term goals including early retirement.• Many are starting food related businesses. • The youth market is adventurous and not afraid of risk.• Being internet savvy, leads to new business ideas and

international markets.• Sense of fairness and purpose. Fair Trade.• Re Imagine.• Re Use and Re Cycle• Etsy.com opens up markets for authentic, real design, items with

provenance.• Designer fashion accessories created from weathered, aged,

original clothing, such as kimonos morphing into designer bags and one off home accents.

• The acceptance of “ authentic” fakes as we “ tart up” the norm and more acceptance of DIY. A total lack of Bling and a shift indirection towards textures from nature, recycled and reused, re imagined.

• Life.• Population gender imbalances discussed as China currently has

approximately 120 boys to 100 girls and likely by 2030 25% of men in late 30s will never have been married. Widening age gap as men likely to be 10, 20, 30 years older than their bride. India faces similar problems and shrinking work force will mean less financial support for growing aging population throughout Asia.

• Figures from FORBES web site.
