Without fail, the response from this camper to his or her non-camp folks is something along the lines of that “they just don’t understand”. As a director, I invariably hear a different type of question countless times throughout the year, one that has a similar answer to it, though I’d never actually say those words out loud. The question? “So you run a summer camp...what do you do during the rest of the year?” I have a suite of answers that I use each time I hear this particular question. My favorite one tends to be “oh, I take a nice 6 month break from September until mid to late February. I travel the world a bit, work on my tan and relax. Then, I slowly start to ease myself back part time. Then around the middle of March I’m back to working full time until we get to camp.” Spoiler Alert: that statement couldn’t be further from the truth! Yes, it is a different world, the residential camping field. Think about it for a moment. We spend 9 to 10 solid months out of the year planning for a 2-3 month period during the summer. Even those who attended summer camp for years have a hard time comprehending everything that goes on during the year in order to effectively and efficiently run a residential summer camp. And that’s saying nothing about actually capturing the magic that is camp. So what do we do during the year? Well, after transitioning camp offices from the mountains back to San Diego, we immediately begin planning camp for the following summer. Why? Well, for starters, in order to have a camp, we need campers. We need staff. We need SIT’s. We need camp programs. We need vans. We need schedules. We need to plan trips and overnights. We need to plan meals. Trust me, the list could go on. Now, if this all ran itself like clockwork I could understand the basic question, but campers grow up and age out of camp. New campers always come in. Staff go their separate ways throughout the year and we’re always looking for new, fun and innovative programs to enhance camp. Marketing materials take careful thought and work so that we can adequately promote our program. Sas, JB, Jeremy & I have spent the better part of the past two months on the road on Sundays and throughout the weeks, visiting synagogues and homes meeting with potential new campers. We’ve planned our three (yes three!) ATID Trips, successfully held our annual Women’s Weekend retreat, threw one fantastic reunion and one unforgettable Winter Camp Shabbaton. CHAI’LIGHTS Way up the ta l l green mountains there’s a camp we have a l l come to share

I’ve heard it countless times, at least once each session on the last night of camp. A camper from the oldest grade “graduating” from his or her camper years saying their goodbye to the camp family, often teary-eyed saying how their friends at home always ask why they spend their summers at camp. !!!!!!

Thank You 2013! Here We Come

We’re long past that point in the year in which we begin to refer to Summer, 2013 as last summer and

start calling the upcoming summer this summer. Summer

2014 will be here before we know it!

We opened registration early this year, offering Priority

Registration exclusively for our returning families in September. The response was overwhelming!

With well over 400 campers already enrolled for 2014, we can say with absolute certainty that the excitement for camp is in the air, and that CMC 2014 will be yet another incredible summer!

2014

2014 ATID Trips 9th and 10th Grade Campers Believe it or not, we are inching towards Summer 2014 and we can’t begin to tell you how excited we are for your participation in next summer’s ATID program. If this will be your second year in ATID we look forward to having you back! For the rest of you, you’ve waited patiently for years until you could return as an ATID camper. Your time has come and we can’t wait to watch you grow as a part of this program.

ATID is Camp Mountain Chai’s 9th & 10th Grade Leadership Program, and is a Hebrew word that means future. We chose this word with great intention. You are the future leaders of camp! You are the future Kavanah participants, SITs, counselors, specialists and unit leaders of CMC. A camp’s staff is the life and soul of any successful summer camp. Before you know it, you will be in a position to take that step, but for now this program will challenge you, excite you and provide you with the opportunity to be leaders at camp this summer.

We are excited to announce that all 3 sessions will have an ATID trip this summer, a departure from previous summers in which we only had ATID trips offered during sessions 2 & 3. Below is a quick rundown of the 2014 trips.

SESSION 1 – CATALINA ISLAND, CA Camping, Swimming, Snorkeling, Kayaking, and MORE!

SESSION 2 – NORTHERN ARIZONA: GRAND CANYON, FLAGSTAFF, SEDONA

Camping, Hiking, Jeep Rides, and MORE!

SESSION 3 – NORTHERN CALIFORNIA: YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK

(Camping, Hiking, Waterfalls, Boating, and MORE!)

MARCH 2014 CAMP MOUNTAIN CHAI EDITION 9

At Camp with Katie O. Our very own Katie O’Loughlin gives us a birds-eye view as to what’s happening up the tall green mountain this off-season! It's a funny thing about summer camps. Even when the summer is over and the kids have gone, the place remains standing. With Camp Mountain Chai closing down after another great summer, camp opened its doors to the corporate groups, schools, and religious retreats that use our site for their fall, winter and spring getaways.

It's been a busy seven months with many diverse groups coming and going, and it seems hard to believe that only a few short months ago campers and counselors were dancing and singing around camp, celebrating camp highlights such as grilled cheese day by painting their faces orange. But perhaps more of that summer camp spirit remains behind in the walls and ground than one would expect; a fact which can be seen and felt in moments like this past weekend when a corporate retreat of over 200 business minded adults tried to eat donuts off of strings using only their mouths, raced around camp in a relay race, and then dried off around a bonfire with s'mores after getting caught in a spring rainstorm. !!!!Now that we're long past summer, the weather has cooled down considerably and we're enjoying a respite from the high temperatures and heat that those down the hill have been dealing with. There's been the occasional rainstorm and even some snow to keep everyone on their toes, but it makes us appreciate the sunny weather that we get the rest of the time all the more, and it makes the indoor renovations in the Chadar Ochel all the more sensible and desirable to our maintenance staff who would otherwise be outside in the rain. Our transition to buffet style dining has been happily made, as we've converted some of our dining hall's unused space into a buffet room. As the photo above shows, the construction is complete now, and with only the cosmetic details of our new buffet room left to worry about, we couldn't be happier that we made the switch.

It's been a wonderful past few months, and we're hoping that the fresh air, mountain vistas, and summer camp spirit continue to inspire all of our groups, and let them act like kids for a little while until it's time for our own campers to return back to Camp Mountain Chai this summer.

Ever wonder what goes on up at camp long after the campers have departed?

CMC Winter Camp Shabbaton Recap Think camp…in the winter! Camp Mountain Chai hosted its 8th Annual Winter Camp Shabbaton, January 31-February 2 up at Camp Mountain Chai! Approximately 100 campers and friends of CMC in grades 4 through 8 (yes, 8th grade!) left their school routines behind to enjoy a fun-filled, Jewish weekend up at camp. We tied the weekly Torah portion Terumah into our theme of cooperation, and had campers working in groups putting a puzzle together. The overarching premise was that Jeremy, our Director of Jewish Education, stole the Torah cover in protest since he couldn’t actually join us for the weekend. Campers were given puzzle pieces for

completing tasks at various stations. Each group had a slice of the big puzzle, which revealed the building that the Torah cover was located in.!

Campers also got to roam through Arts & Crafts, Dance, Drama, Archery, Basketball, Gaga & our climbing wall Shabb’options style at various times on Saturday. The weekend also included Kabbalat Shabbat & Shabbat morning services, Shabbat dinner, Israeli dancing, song session and havdalah. All in all, it was a great weekend up the tall green mountain. Our campers got to experience camp in the winter, a nice and welcomed departure from the school routine that keeps them away from a place so special to many of them for much of the year.!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

!!!!!!!!!!!!

Saying goodbye to one’s camper days is never easy. Years of fun, friends, laughter, tears, games, moments, memories...you get the picture. Camp is a special place. Knowing that your camper days are ending can be difficult. We asked some of our recent 10th grade campers to reflect on their final summer at camp.

KORINA DAY, 5 YEAR CAMPER (2009-2013)  Where do I even start?!? It's hard to put into words what a positive impact CMC has had on me these past 5 summers as a camper. Camp interested me in the faith of Judaism and from then on I decided to become a Bat Mitzvah and join my Jewish community at home. My years at camp were absolutely amazing but once reaching the oldest unit, Atid, everything changed. From earning more freedom to the Atid trips, you have the most memorable years of camp and your life. I had the chance of going to camp for 5 weeks this last summer, and, knowing that this was my last year as a camper, I made sure I took in everything I could. For example, the Atid trips are a huge part of the Atid experience. It's a way of becoming a big family with all your fellow Atiders. From not showering for 4 or 5 days to cooking and packing up your food and luggage on a bus, you really form a close bond with everybody and that's when you realize the exact meaning of a unit. The trips literally start the night before you leave and end the night you get back. From the small memories such as 12 hour bus rides to Utah, to the larger memories such as hiking the narrows and water rafting, you'll never forget your Atid trips. The counselors over the past 5 years have been such incredible role models whom I look up to greatly and inspire me to become staff one day in the future. Knowing this was my last year I will never forget all the lifetime friendships I've made and the memories I now have to share. You will see me again soon CMC and I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who made my summers as a camper the best summers of my life!

MAX KELTON, 3 YEAR CAMPER (2011-2013)  My 10th grade summer at camp was the best summer I have experienced in my short, 15 year old life. From meeting new lifelong friends to becoming closer with old friends, the whole summer was fantastic. The whole Atid experience is about bonding, and even though two weeks doesn't seem very long, it is a long enough time period to get closer with kids that you normally might not get to meet.  On the Atid trip, all of the campers learn to survive almost completely on their own. We all had to cook for ourselves without the help of our counselors. The trip really helps all of the campers grow up and become young adults instead of just kids. For the trip that I went on during second session last summer, we went whitewater rafting, and it was one of the most exhilarating experiences I have ever had. Every day that I'm not at camp, I wish I could go back. Camp is a second home to me and each camper that goes there is part of my second family. I know that this was my last year at camp as a camper, but I hope to return as an SIT and a counselor. Everyone at camp loves it and can't stand to leave. To me, another phase for Heaven is Camp Mountain Chai.

DR. JENNIFER WILKS, M.D. I am a physician board certified in Preventive Medicine.   I have been practicing Preventive Medicine and Public Health for the last 5 years.  Prior to that, I spent 12 years practicing Primary Care Medicine for military personnel and their families. I went to medical school in New York, where I also grew up and looked forward to spending my summers as a camper and then a counselor, for many years. During my free time I enjoy spending time with my 2 young children and being outdoors, doing things such as hiking, biking, camping or watching my funny 6 chickens.  I am so excited to have the opportunity to work at Camp Mountain Chai this summer!

DAWN ROSENBLUM, R.N. Hi!  I'm Dawn Rosenblum and this summer will be my second as a nurse at CMC.  It will also be the second for my kids, Max and Sophie. During the school year, I am a nurse for the Solana Beach School District.   Prior to school nursing, I worked as a Family Nurse Practitioner both in San Diego and in New York City, where I grew up. I love that at CMC, the children are just themselves -  kids having fun, getting dirty, gaining independence and making lifelong friendships. This past summer, Max loved nature and sports and Sophie really enjoyed arts and crafts.  In 2014, I hope to be able to try the ropes course. It looked like a lot of fun! I can't wait to take care of your children again next summer.  They'll be in good hands with the kind, supportive and fun CMC staff!
