iHeartMedia/Wichita cluster PD Jim Dorman discusses his most influential music:1. The Beach Boys: Growing up in Southern CA, it was a rite of passage to be a Beach Boys fan. I have more than 60 different Beach Boys’ albums on vinyl. 2. The first concert I ever attended was The Beach Boys at the Tacoma Dome Dec. 9,

1977. That was a religious experience for a huge fan.3. Electric Light Orchestra’s Discovery: I was a huge Jeff Lynne fan.4. The Rolling Stones’ Bridges to Babylon Tour at RFK Stadium: The second best concert I ever attended. 5. Chicago: I love their non-wimpy music. Show me an artist with a horn section, and I’m in.• Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: I have yet to listen to a Chris Stapleton album. The only songs I’ve heard are the singles.• An “important” piece or style of music you just don’t get: Bluegrass. • An album you listened to incessantly: Runaway June’s new album [Blue Roses]. Their version of “Fast As You” is an amazing cover.• An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Plastic Bertrand’s “Ça Plane Pour Moi.” You can’t sit still listening. Plus, it has a Beach Boys-feel to me … at least with the background singers. • Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: Prior to this moment, I would never have admitted to listening to the Backstreet Boys.

industry broadly but also worked to develop a study that represented the broad country music audience that it has become.” Any country professional whose efforts intersect with those outside the format/genre can find application. “The data has uses in selling country as a genre, supporting brand opportunities with partners and tracking shifts in engagements relative to new initiatives at the genre level by access providers, just to name a few,” Stump says. “The ongoing understanding of these country audience behaviors is an educational opportunity for all of us as we seek to grow the genre.” An outgrowth of CMA’s 2017 study The State of Country Music Streaming, TrendWatch’s first iteration – sent to members via email – pulled insights from May to December 2019. A standout in its findings was the overall increase in daily listening among the country audience, from 25% in May to 27% by year’s end. But ...what exactly is “daily country listening?” “Any platform they can choose to listen to country music, which includes AM/FM radio, satellite radio, all major DSPs, their personal CD collection, digital songs and albums, TV and video (which includes YouTube and Vevo),” says Stump. Additional findings:The shift in more daily listeners is most evident among 18- to 34-year-old and 50- to 64-year-old country listeners. The average country listener spends roughly 50% of their music listening time with country and the same share with other genres.Country audience size held steady across 2019 with one in two adults listening to country at least monthly. CMA members can expect the monthly update of key measures, plus a more detailed version shared on a quarterly basis. The information is expected to evolve and grow but will keep tabs on baseline trends. Additional insights may include demographic segmentation and regional analysis. A pair of songs from the ‘90s made the list – and both belong to McGraw: “Where The Green Grass Grows” (1998) and “Something Like That” (1999). Another 23 are from 2000-2009 while 75 are from 2010-2017.Thirty male solo artists and 10 groups/duos contribute to the

top 100. The 30 men posted 74 songs while groups/duos had 24 songs. Underwood and Miranda Lambert are the only solo female artists to have songs in the Top 100: Underwood with the aforementioned quintet of hits and Lambert with a pair. This is the fifth consecutive year that Carrie and Miranda are the only two solo women with songs in the Top 100. Five other PG tunes had female leads: Lady Antebellum (3) and Little Big Town and Thompson Square with one each. By comparison, the Jan. ’19 PG Top 100 featured 70 songs from

27 different male artists, seven songs from two women and 23 songs from nine groups/duos. Side note: At the top of this piece it was noted that nine artists

have 50 of the Top 100 Power Gold tunes. Of course, all of those artists also have current hits, plus songs in Recurrent. Seeing that so few artists delivered half of the Top 100 Power Gold made me wonder about the overall artist concentration of country music on the radio today. To examine the overall airplay impact of the nine acts in the

first paragraph, I tabulated the number of songs they had on the current chart, Mediabase’s list of Recurrents – there are 144 of them – and in the Top 100 Power Gold. I found they delivered

85 hits, or fully 33% of all the music on Country radio during the survey week. Next I added the number of titles they had in the Top 1000 most-played Gold songs. I found they delivered 239 hits; 21% of all the music on Country radio during the survey week. Taking the analysis a step further, I then totaled all of the airplay

from artists whose number of Currents/Recurrents/Gold totaled at least 15 titles among the 1,144 songs (144 Recurrent and 1000 Gold titles.) What I found is that 21 artists had 505 songs, which represents 44% of all the music heard on Country radio the week of the survey. Looking at the Top 100 Power Gold/Currents/Recurrents, those same 21 acts had 119 of the total, representing 46% of all airplay. For those who think 1000 Gold songs is too deep, I also ran

the stats in the examples above using the Top 250 Gold songs, which is more in-line with the average Country station’s Gold category. All airplay from the nine core Top 100 Power Gold artists accounted for 123 Gold/Currents/Recurrents or 30% of the music heard. Tabulating airplay from the three categories for the 21 artists referenced above, they posted 187 songs, 46% of all Country airplay for that week. I realize that’s a lot of numbers, but they’re needed to understand

how few artists represent so much music on the average Country station. This format has always loved its superstars. But I can only wonder what kind of impact this concentration of music by a relative handful of artists can have on the listener. If you’d like to see previous Power Gold charts, visit the

Country Aircheck archives and select the following issues of the weekly: CAW 1/14/19, CAW 1/29/18, CAW 4/17/17, CAW 7/5/16, CAW 6/15/15, CAW 5/19/14, CAW 4/29/13, CAW 5/7/12, CAW 7/11/11 and CAW 9/27/10. –Lon Helton
