As an automotive enthusiast, I set out to create an automotive magazine with a lifestyle sense to it. During this quest, I have driven some of the most unique vehicles from Russia’s Iconic Lada, to Cuba’s “Guaya” and every-thing in between. I have also had the pleasure of experiencing some of the latest and finest automobiles soon to be out on the market. I founded this publication to shake things up in the publishing biz in the Carolinas, so I thought...Let’s go for it! Despite dealing with less than honest prospect “partners”, numerous unreliable associ-ates and a roster of affiliates with their own respectful agendas, we are still plugging away! This is America, and dreams are built upon the rubble of devastation every day. I am ready to build some skyscrapers here! As a speedometer can go from 0-200, we review cars in a similar range. We have everything from entry to exot-ic, or modest to complex. Clutch Auto Mag Covers everything relevant to the Carolinas automotive enthusiast.Clutch Auto Mag is more than an automotive magazine...it is about having fun with the luxuries of life beyond the luxury lifestyle.

We Review the newest, fastest and most luxurious cars, but we also feature amazing homes, restaurants, and more showing our readers the best of the Carolinas and beyond.I have realized that success is different than my original thoughts on the subject. Success is realizing what truly matters in life with the support of my mentor Harry Ingle and my beloved lady EEB. I am going to introduce this magazine with lots of passion and love. How else would I do it?I’m proud to introduce Clutch Auto Mag & please register for a chance to win a free vacation to the Royal Phuket Marina (no purchase necessary).

Blumenthal Performing Arts CenterRenowned architect Cesar Pelli designed the Per-forming Arts Center as well as the adjacent Bank of America Corporate Center and Founders Hall. The Performing Arts Center opened in November 1992 after a three-year construction effort. The Center’s name honors the contributions of the people of the state of North Carolina as well as the generosity of the Blumenthal Foundation, the largest private donor to the capital campaign.Momentum grew in the ‘80s, resulting in a $15 mil-lion allocation from the State of North Carolina, a $15 million bond referendum approved by the citizens of Charlotte and an additional $32 million contributed by individuals, corporations and foundations to fund construction. In 1987, the Belk Brothers Company donated a valuable piece of land in uptown Charlotte as the site for Blumenthal Performing Arts Center.Blumenthal Performing Arts Center at 130 N. Tryon St. includes Belk Theater, Booth Playhouse and Stage Door Theater.

Knight Theater at Levine Center for the ArtsKnight Theater seats 1,191 with in the orchestra, grand tier and mezzanine levels. A variety of dance and music shows are hosted here. It is the home the-ater for North Carolina Dance Theatre. The theater is physically connected and shares lobby space with the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art.

Spirit SquareBlumenthal Performing Arts added Spirit Square Cen-ter for Arts and Education at 345 N. College St. to its mission in July 1997. Spirit Square is the former First Baptist Church and was built in 1909.The congregation moved to a new building in the early 1970s, and community leaders rallied to preserve the structure and give it new life as a community arts center, Spirit Square, which opened in 1976. Today, Spirit Square is a community center focusing on arts education and community theater. The pride of Spirit Square is the 730-seat McGlohon Theatre. Originally the First Baptist Church sanctuary, the theatre has been carefully restored to preserve and enhance its unique architectural details. The theatre is named in honor of the late legendary jazz pianist Loonis McGlohon of Charlotte. Spirit Square’s second theater is the black-box style Duke Energy Theatre, which seats 182.

The new redesigned Volvo s60 gets a sleeker look and Inline 6 over the previous 5cyl. This 300hp Turbocharged bit of fury keeps it to

the ground with 6speed and all wheel drive system in the T-6 package, S60 brings it to the table. Behind the wheel it’s sporty and smooth. The gauges apear to float over the rpms with hidden needles and well lit back lighting. A non distracting nav system high up on the dash board is easy to see without being in the way. Most people seem to like a lot of buttons and a col-umn filled with gadgets, it’s refreshing to have just the necessity and easy to use features. Sometimes simplic-ity is the epitome of luxury. Active pedestrian avoid-ance, blind-spot alerts and lane-departure warnings

make it as if the car could drive itself. When you want to dip into Rpm’s and enjoy the Turbo Charger awd system you can hit the suspension into Sport or ad-vanced slide down into the shift mode and let her rip. With all this power and the six speed auto trans you would think the AWD system would give up, quite the contrary. In advanced mode its near impossible to lose traction on the everyday drives. Off ramps become your personal G-meter and the active computer system takes all the guess work out and makes the average driver a Jimmy Johnson of work commutes. The real question though is why would you take the expressway when the winding rural roads will make your drive to work worth the trip.

When is a little Buick better than a lot of Buick? I really like this Regal! We just tested a Buick Lacrosse and it was a fine machine and we said so in our write-up. Maybe it’s just me, but this Regal is a re-ally slick little ride. Watch yourself here; this Buick is made in GERMANY! I couldn’t believe it either. What do Germans know about Buicks? Well, appar-ently a lot, because the ride, handling, and interior design/finish are top flight. The engine in this one is the 2.4 liter inline 4 cylinders and it has enough go that I wouldn’t need the 2.0 liter turbo and the 38 more horses to feed. 182 HP is enough for a 3600lb car. I must be getting old, but when something works this well then why change. The EPA City/Highway numbers are: 19/30 and the turbo numbers are: 18/29. I got a chance to throw this one around a little and it was almost impossible to scare myself. No loud tire squeal, it just turned. Well, I knew I could upset it with more speed and more throttle but it just went where I hoped it would without complaint. I did this at least four times on a nice smooth road and because it’s front wheel drive I just couldn’t get it loosened up and sideways. That’s when I thought of the stability control. It was on, so I guess that stuff works better than I thought. I didn’t try again as some other cars

came around. Russelsheim, Germany is the point of origin and I’m told that this car looks a bit like the Opel Insignia that was the European Car of the Year a couple of years ago. At first glance I thought the Re-gal might be using the Cruze platform, but it seemed a little larger. It is larger, but not too much. A 6 speed automatic works well, but it is a bit quick on the down shift on hills and acceleration at speed. If you put it on cruise control it will only shift up or down when the computer tells it to and you know that computer is quicker and smarter than us! I tried the rear seat and like most cars today, it didn’t fit me too well as I had the front seat back pretty far. It seems like all cars short of a limo are about like this. I think the thing I most like about this car is the front seat. It just fit me, and everything was about where it should be. There was one little thing that I didn’t like and that was the shape of the outside rear view mirrors. They are pointed on the outer end and don’t give as large a view as I would like. I suspect this has to do with streamlin-ing and noise. I’d like more mirror. The Regal starts at $26,995 for the non-turbo, so it isn’t cheap, but, I believe you get what you pay for in this good looking, well made, comfortable car.

Hyundai has something here that is unex-

pected. They have their eyes set on the

mid-size sedan market. This was not the

sonata I had envisioned or I expected. Coming from

a company that brought us the Genesis and Genesis

coupe I should have known something amazing was

around the corner.

The Sonata’s design has dynamic curves and

enticing lines. More like a Euro car than something

from our friends in South Korea. Features like a

chrome grill, super bright fog lights and side mirror

turn signals that could signal an airplane. Even the

shark antenna is right at home on this sedan. Dual ex-

haust is not the first thing you think of but the Sonata

has it and it’s not just there for looks. This car has a

274hp 2.0l turbo charged GDI (Gas direct injection)

4cyl engine. Impressive accelaration and a 0-60 time

of just 5.7 seconds. Matched with the 6-speed paddle

shifters give this car a racer feel. The paddle shift is

one of the best I have tested so far on a sedan. They

shift when you hit the paddle with virtually no lag.

Your wallet won’t take much of a beating because of

its 33 miles per gallon on the highway, a great feat for

any midsized sedan.

The interior is marvelous

and has more anomities than other

cars in its class. Standard Blue-

tooth hands free phone and factory

HD radio with XM data services.

The climate control system looks

like its right out of a Volvo and

sits nicely in the Sonata’s inovative

interior. The leather is fantastic

and well bolstered, just what you

need to keep you in your seat when

you are testing out the ponies. Just

about every techno toy possible.

Hyundai has equiped this car in

everyway. I felt right at home and

could sense every corner of the car

while driving.

The safety equipment is

about standard with higher end se-

dans. Front active head restraints,

front seat and side curtain airbags

incase of anything unfortunate.

The systems to help you avoid po-

tential problems are the electronic

stability control, traction control,

antilock brakes and daytime run-

ning lights standard.

I have had a blast in the

Sonata and it truly was not what I

was expecting. Nothing was sparred

or missed in the detail while

designing this car. Absolutely an

amazing sedan.

Nothing short of phenomenal and a great contender against its boot shaped rivals. A technological marvel founded by race winning design such as FSI direct injection, sodium cooled exhaust valves and R tronic transmission (optional) give the R8 an astounding 0-60 in just 4.4 seconds and a 187 mph top speed. Sure to glue your head to the back of your seat.

The soul of the R8 is a 4.2L V-8 displayed under a transparent panel showing off the 420 ponies 317 lb-ft of torque is tamed by Audi’s legendary Quattro all-wheel drive system. Driver confidence is assured on any road conditions when you need it where you need it.

Life behind the wheel makes you feel like a Le mans driver but does not give up the creature comforts nor requires the fire suit. Interior wrapped in a fine Nappa Leather from the seats, door inserts and door handles. An Audi concert system with single CD player, MP3 capability, AM/FM radio, input jack give this machine an incredible sound on the inside and out. Speed-dependent volume control lets you enjoy your music at any speed, though I enjoy the music coming from the exhaust.

Audi believes in your safety and has always delivered some of the safest cars on the road. Industry-leading safety features such a duel range airbags, Quattro All-wheel drive and ESP with sport modes. Seat-mounted head and chest thorax side airbags and knee airbags for both driver and passenger show that they are serious about their performance and your safety.

Audi has made a sports car that goes above and beyond, making the R8 a timeless car that will carry on for years to come.

Avenging their title with an affordable mid-sized sedan, the Heat is a great way to have performance without hurting the wallet. I recently got a hold of the Avenger Express and felt it was lacking and was patiently waiting to get my hands on the Heat. Now that I have gotten behind the wheel all my questions have been answered, from the plain interior and less than exciting power train the Heat has it all.

At first glance you notice its wider more ag-gressive stance thanks to its redesigned front fascia and body panels. It’s longer, wider, and lower, but the wheel base is unchanged. Length has increased 1.7inches, half an inch lower and a inch wider. Though it does not sound like much it is very notice-able. It’s sporty and sensible with a hint of aggres-siveness. 283hp and 260lb-ft driven by then new 24 valve, DOHC, VVT engine mated a Chrysler 6-speed automatic gives a robust grunt. Zero to 60 in just 6.2 seconds is respectable for a 3600lb sedan. If you think

a sedan with some pep is going to help make the oil tycoons richer you would be wrong, EPA rates the new V-6 at 19 MPG around town and 29 on the highway and big step up from the 16/28 in 2010.The Heat has an upgraded two tone interior which features a stitched dash and re-bolstered seats. The upgrades are small but very noticeable and are a welcome change. The padded dash and door panels among the changes, giving it a sporty feel while still able to haul people around. I did notice the buttons behind the steering wheel for volume and tuner were a welcome surprise while driving down the express way. Driving the Heat is a breeze (no pun intended towards Chryslers pre-vious midsize sedan) to drive and is smooth around town. The torque steer is mild for the power it is put-ting to the pavement and gives some excitement when the light turns green. The steering feels a bit heavy and body roll is mild. It gave me great confidence on the rainy twisty roads. The brakes felt great and made me forget I was driving a sedan.

CRUZE2011 CHEVROLET

The Motor City has been trying to get a piece of the fuel conscious environment that we have come to expect from our cars. The Eco-Boost cruze is a great start. The body has been designed to cut through the air more efficiently. The 6-speed is very smooth fora sedan and shifts crisply and smooth. I did however have a odd time going from 4th to 5th and 5th to 6th. It seems to be at a weird angle or the fact i am 6’ feet tall might of had me sitting oddly in the seat. Don’t get me wrong. The interior on the Cruze is by far my fa-vorite from all the other Gm models. It has a navigation system paired with the radio and everything else you could want on screen. The satellite radio uses knobs to change the staion and keeps the station you have selected while you are browsing without having to worry about it changing if you took too long. Other Gm models like the Lacrosse and Regal if you look at a station too long it will just change it for you. The plastic

in the cruze’s dashboard is soft and looks really nice. Not what we are used to from earlier Chevy intiors. Aside from body designs and special tires, ext to increase gas miliage the Ecoboost includes a Turbo charged 4cyl. People ask why a turbo on a economy car? Its simple, the turbo only spools up and gives you boost (power) from 3,000 pluse Rpms. So if you are in a mood to go fast you just give some more throttle, other than that you can just keep it under the Rpm powerband and increase your gas miliage. You mate the turbo with the 6-speed transmission now you have the ability to down shift on hills and depress the clutch and coast without wasting too much energy. All these combined bring you gas milage in the 40’s while still having the ability to crack a smile when you need a bit of adrenaline.

2011 NISSAN

JUKEThe Juke is the answer to the around town SUV. This MUV (Mini Utility Vehicle) has everything you need in an SUV, and the stuff you want for a sports car.

The exterior hosts a new bold look from Nis-san. High wheel arches and hidden rear doors make this MUV look sporty and fast while the front has an interesting look much more refreshing than the Cube. The headlights are low in the grill and are surpris-ingly good for lighting up lower spots on the road. You’ll notice the corner lamps on the hood are not just cosmetic either, once you are in the car and they light up the front sides of the bonnet. This is a great feature for negotiating tight areas in the city and enclosed wooden areas in the country.

The interior is nothing short of what a new vehicle should have. It hosts sport inspired seats with bolsters comfortable enough for long trips and easy to find controls with Nissan’s new I-CON system (Inte-grated Control option). It holds the climate controls, along with the chassis controls, all in one place. The options available are vast from moon roofs to rearview systems, and a premium sound system if the standard six speaker audio system is not enough. Flip and fold flat rear seats make it handy for groceries but are only

roomy enough for two adults though it is said to seat five. It has an optional six-speed transmission only available on the front drive models.

You can tell Nissan backs a winner when you scroll through the functions of the instrument cluster and notice you can change the shift times, throttle controls, view boost and lateral G’s just like you would in the GT-R. The options and the styling will make this Nissan a tuner’s dream with endless ideas for body modification and performance tuning. A turbo charged 4cyl and AWD make this MUV one of the most fun and gas efficient SUV’s out there. It spools up fast and lets you get to your destination in a hurry. The AWD system keeps you in the corners and frees you from the mud with its 50/50 front rear torque split and rear axle side to side. Keep your wheels in check for better cornering. 27 city/32 highway and a starting price of $18,960 is a bargain for what the Juke has to offer. Nissan has a winner here. Its fearless and bold new designs are sparking up a lot of interest. The Juke may not be for everyone, but the price tag and perfor-mance will bring in the fan base.

My mother drives a Buick. Mom is 90, and she and many other seniors LIKE Buicks! Her Buick dealer seems to understand that they have a following among seniors, and they make her feel welcome and impor-tant. More importantly they don’t treat her like a silly/stupid little old lady at the service entrance. With that said, we come to this 2011 Lacrosse. When I first saw it, I couldn’t say “Buick.” It is a little more stylish than I’m use to with Buicks and upon getting seated I knew that this wasn’t “My Mother’s Buick”. She likes them plain and simple. This car is fully tricked out with most all the bells and whistles. OnStar, Bluetooth (for phone), navigation, stability and traction control, 110v power (My grandson plugged in his Xbox 360 and played on the rear entertainment system while we made a short trip. Very quiet in the back seat!), leather heated and ventilated seats, head-up display puts the speedometer onto the windshield, keyless start, side blind zone alert, backup camera and more. A lot of these electronics don’t do much for me. I’m 67 and I usually know where I am and where I’m going. This car is well enough equipped for the younger set that

might go further and wider than us seniors and not only like, but require these amenities and features (toys?). The Lacrosse is a good looking ride whether you are 25 or 75. It has nice stance, good wheels, not too low (a senior thing), not too high (another senior thing), and almost wide enough door openings (they are never wide enough). Plush and pleasant might cover it. It’s one of those cars that kind of make you look like you know what you are doing. The test car is trimmed as a CLX, however, the installed 2.4 liter DOHC 4 cylinder @182hp is listed only for the more austere CX model, and it is definitely a bit underpow-ered. Guess what,? My Mom would like it; I wanted a little more power. It’s not bad, but could be better (at additional cost and less fuel mileage). The 4 cylinder has a combined fuel economy of 23 MPG with a rated high of 30 MPG and a possible high of 36 MPG. The 3.0 liter, 255hp V6 would be just right. Incidentally, an all-wheel drive version is available. It is my opinion that this good looking, well appointed, large, luxury car will suit just about anyone who likes, needs, or wants an American made sedan.

The Motor City visits the Carolinas and they are

always welcome. Chrysler calls the new 300 “The

next in line of kings” which is fitting as it carves the

corners here in the Queen City. What a great place to

test the New 300 as it stunned the racing world back in

1955 and is once again visiting the stock car

capital. In the 50’s the 300 was a unstoppable

powerhouse when it hit the track. Today the Heritage

is still here with the optional Hemi V-8. One of the

most stylish sedans America has to offer. The

redisigned styling gives the 300 a fresh look over the

previous 2010 models. LED outlined headlamps that

look like they are straight from Europe.

Tasteful chrome accents bring out the body character-

istics nicley and set a new standard for chrysler. This is

the modern day cruiser.

I call this car the Cruiser because the style

ctches peoples eye as you drive by and when you sit in

the plush Nappa leather you will want your Sunday

drive to last all day. Real wood trim crafted into the

center console and surrounded by satin chrome

finish make the 300 a class above. Everything is in this

car is heated from the steering wheel, seats and even

the cupholders are heated (and cooled) which was a

welcome suprise in the crisp Carolina mornings. LED

lights in the cabin set a great ambienance. The driving

force is a 3.6l Pentastar v-6 engine which is named one

of Ward’s 10 best engines for 2011. 292hp, 260lb-ft of

torque and a EPA estimated 18mpg/city and 27mpg

highway. Whats really astounding though is the ride

quility. This is thanks to the Multi-link suspension,

hydrobushing, revised shock absorber and re-tuned

spring rate make this car feel like you are driving on

ice. Chrysler has taken the raines in delivering quility

American products and soon may be setting the stan-

dard in the years to come. Lets hope the relations with

Fiat will bring more great innovations.

T he 2011 Cheverolet Camaro SS does not disap-point. All around the board from the engines raw power to the beautiful leather interior with match-

ing stitching. You won’t be let down when you get into this awesome convertible. With a 0-60 mph of 4.8 seconds you won’t have any problem curing your need for speed issues. Just be careful when passing in traffic, you won’t know how fast you are going! I happened to look down and I was doing 70 mph in a 45 mph!

Whoops! Oh well, it was pretty exhilarating! Also tak-ing corners at higher speeds is not a problem either. The Stabili Tark coupled with the huge 20 inch wheels leaves you completely glued to the road. But if you want to break the back tires loose for a little burn out action. The 426hp monster V8 has no problem blow-ing a little smoke from the 20 inch wheels wrapped in Pirelli rubber.

The only thing that I was truly disappointed in was the overall weight of the car. It seems rather sluggish when doing any kind of quick maneuvers. With an almost 4,000lb car, what more can you expect. However, you can’t tell it weighs that much on the straight away that’s for sure.

The interior of the SS surprised me a lot! From the quad instrument cluster in the center console to the heads up display, I was very pleased. Chevrolet over-looked nothing in this area. The two-toned leather matching the outside was a great touch to add, plus the matching stitching really makes this car a sports car. For a car known for its speed you wouldn’t expect a sound system as good as it is in the SS. Wow, was I wrong! You can crank the stereo up to 10 and hear it a quarter mile away!

The rebirth of American muscle cars is in full swing and you won’t want to miss out on this one. Even if you’re not a Chevy person, let this be the car to change your mind. I can promise you will be suprised! Put some adrenaline back into your body, drop the clutch, and haul ass!

vertibles starting with the 1950 A6G Frua

spyder and it is the first four-seat cabriolet in Mase-

rati’s history. The GranTurismo Convertible is the

purest expression of Maserati open-air driving, with

unmistakable design, a spacious interior for four with

an ideal combination of driving performance and

pleasure.

With the Newest GrandTurismo Convertible, Pininfa-

rina has created a true four-seat convertible that com-

bines the comfort, quiet and safety of the couple with

the excitement of top down motoring in the unique

Maserati tradition. Its 433 hp, 4,7 liter V8,

engine and the six-speed adaptive automatic

trasmission with standard paddle shifters deliver

thoroughbred performance and the unmistakable

Masarati exhaust note.

NISSANRoadsTeR Tour

Page 27: CLUTCH AUTO MAG SUMMER 2011

27

Nissan has kept the Z car lineage alive and better than ever with the introduction of

the all new 2011 370z Roadster Touring model. Not only have they made the body style more curva-ceous and head turning they also shortened the wheelbase and wid-ened the stance. Giving it plenty of structural rigidity, even though its a convertible, over even previous coupe models. The 370z bor-rowed some of these styling cues from Nissan’s super-car the GT-R to make it clear that this is a true sports car, most notably the angle on the roof line. While retaining classic Z interior styling there has been a large improvement over the 350z’s somewhat “cheap” inte-rior materials, changing to more brushed metal and higher strength plastics.

The solid short ratio six speed transmission is a joy to use allowing to driver to easily keep the beefy 3.7-liter V-6 in the power band, with the 6th gear allowing for great highway cruising around 2500rpm.

Even with every model of the new 370z weighing 3200lbs plus, clocking a very respectable sub 5 sec 0-60 sprint the engine is still capable of 18/26mpg. The touring 370z we were supplied with came with 18” stylized aluminum alloy wheels. Which have been reported to cause tram-lining (tracking) but we tried to replicate this condition on roads that we have experienced this effect on before with other ve-hicles and were pleasantly surprised to find that we received no such feedback.

The rack-pinion speed sensitive steering was on point. Al-lowing for tight responsive control of the vehicle in both normal city driving and near track conditions. At lower speeds this car gives the driver a sense of absolute finite control and was a joy to drive even at 35 mph. Though the steering system did dampen the connec-tion between driver and road it still gave a true sport car feel drifting through the apexes of multiple turns with ease. We found the 370z even with the traction control off to

RoadsTeR Tour

Page 28: CLUTCH AUTO MAG SUMMER 2011

28

be very sticky in turns and felt like riding on rails. We had to force the vehicle into a drift and it quickly required its line and vectored out with some serious attitude! Which is probably due to the large 18 by 9 inch rear wheels with Bridge-stone Potenza high performance tires. During all of which your kept firmly embraced by the new bucket seat design; which came wrapped in leather and even had heat and AC.

Other reviews often point to excessive road noise especially at highway speeds and how it becomes unbearable even for a sports car. Our experience was quite the opposite. The interior material upgrade along with the aerodynamics seemed to reduce road noise greatly even with the top down. Compared to the late model 350z there was little if any tire noise that was noticeable during normal conversation.

Plus the eight speaker Bose stereo system that comes in the tour-ing model including the two sub-woofers easily drowned out any noise with shear volume and clarity. The upgraded stereo also includes a 6 disc in-dash CD changer, XM satellite radio and a very cool 3D navigation system to boot. The 370z uses a extremely user friendly button interface utilizing the GPS’s screen for browsing through the multitude of audio and navigation settings provided by Nissan.

Aesthetically the 370z roadster is very pleasing to the eye and the wallet. In terms of performance and price it can out run a Porsche Boxter S in both categories. The test drive we had was surprising to say the least. It surpassed all of our preconceptions and expectations leaving us with a new found respect for the Nissan Z line.

Land Rover has come a long way since they were bought out by Ford Motor Corp. The new LR4 is a great example of their new found quality and craftsmanship. Analog clock, wood grain trim, leather throughout, automatic sunroof in the front with two additional moon roofs in the rear, seating for seven, center console cooler with coolers in the rear, heated steering wheel/seats, touch screen navigation, Bluetooth phone capabilities, exception Harmon Karmon speakers all make this vehicle as luxurious as driving a Jaguar but with the capabilities to take it off road.

The LR4 has many upgrades compared to the previous Discoveries such as the adjustable height control that was standard on the Range Rover. This handles great at full height on the highway and gives it that rugged SUV look. The steering is tight which lets you maintain that 4x4 feel yet handles and corners exceptionally on the road as if you were driving a Rolls Royce. The 4x4 system on this vehicle is in a class of its own with a black and white LCD screen on the instrument panel showing the driver the different four wheel drive selections that are engaged. With the turn of a knob you have a choice of many four wheel

drive options depending on what terrain you are about to embark on.

Overall this vehicle lives up to my expectations and would be a great vehicle for anyone who lives on a country road or around the city; it has something for everyone. It is very powerful with its 5.4 liter V8 but with that power will come some gas consumption, so don’t expect to be getting 20 miles to the gallon. I would rate this vehicle a nine out of ten. This vehicle is capable of both on and off-road without sparing the luxury. -Georges K. Onivogui

These new Mark IIs are a continuation of the fantastic Mark IIs that won the battles between Ford and Fer-rari. As a major part of the original “Ford Le Mans Team” Holman Moody helped build the winning cars. I was there when Ford failed in 1965 and when they won in 1966. Holman Moody continued to be part of the wins in 1967, 1968 and 1969.

This is my photo taken from the Le Mans pits in 1966 as our car finished the 24 hours.

The Holman Moody team car finished third (as requested by Ford), it was a great result for our first

attempt at Le Mans. Team orders did not allow our drivers to try and race the other Ford cars. Having a Mark II that could have won on our first attempt was an unbelievable finish for Holman Moody. I helped to sell this car two years ago, for $2,500,000 and continue to service it today.

There were only thirteen original Mark IIs built in 1965-67. Because of the world wide interest in Histor-ic & Vintage Racing, these are thought of as the great-est of all Ford race cars, and the “ Mark II GT” has become a required part of important car collections. The original Mark IIs raced with Holman Moody serial number tags, thus making Holman Moody the manufacture of record for these 13 original cars. This fact also allows us to continue to build new original Mark IIs that have all of the pedigree, heritage, and design details of the original Mark IIs. The only thing missing is the race history.

Holman Moody was and is the world authority on the Mark IIs and GT 40s. My new Mark II has raced in most of the major American historic races. It would also be vintage “legal” for FIA events in Europe.

The Mark II Story

Page 31: CLUTCH AUTO MAG SUMMER 2011

31

I was paid by Ford to be part of the team in 1996, when we took the three original winning cars back to Le Mans and then on to Goodwood for the Festival of Speed. Again, I was invited back to Goodwood in 2003 to drive the original Le Mans winning Black Mark II.

My driving the “Featured Car” ( valued at $6,000,000.) at such an historic event, shows the posi-tion of importance and trust we have in the racing community around the world. Having repaired and maintained a number of these original Mark IIs, in 1992, I took the steps required to begin the construc-tion of a limited number of new Mark IIs.

Today, we are building new Mark II GTs just as they were in 1966. These new cars have chassis built using Ford original stamping tooling. The body parts are made in the same fiberglass molds that we used in 1966. Every part is just as it was when these great cars were driven to win by the greatest drivers in the world.

Our new Mark IIs are accepted by the FIA as new original race cars. The FIA requires that we repro-duce all of the original parts just as they were. We can not use lighter body parts, bigger engines or brakes. By building these few new cars just as they were we are able to use all of the team test records, design blue prints, and historic data. For the buyer, it means that he is getting a Mark II ready to race and enjoy. The buyer can feel the power and thrust of 427 dry sump engine powering a 2500 pound Mark II at speeds over 200 miles per hour.

The Mark IIs raced in the 1960s had a number of changes from car to car. We are able to build any of these changes into the car you want today. We can build the tunnel port 427 with 2 X 4 V Holley intake of 1967 or it can be like this photo with the Medium riser single 4v intake. This car has the dry sump tank located in the 1967 rear area, but the body and engine are the 1966 Mark II “A” design. The key thing is that all the parts we use could have been used at the time on one of the original Mark IIs.

You can become one of the limited number of people on this planet, who have driven the best Ford team car ever made “The Mark II”. Drivers like Mark Donohue, Ken Miles, A J Foyt, Dan Gurney, all said that this was the best car they ever got to drive. David Piper, Augie Pabst, Bob Bondurant, and Brian Red-man have driven my first Mark II. Each has said that it was the best handling race car that they have ever been in. The balance of power and control is just like it was in 1966 when these great cars won the world’s biggest race.

Why am I getting to write here? Because I know about

At first glance, you would think that Infinitihas not changed from the 2010 model. This does not come as a shock to us because the G37 coupe is a fantastic sports/luxury car. It still holds the smooth eye catching lines, which made it the bigger success in 2010. Acceleration is smooth and can hit 80 without even thinking. The steering is tight and responsive matched with the magnesium paddle shifters make it a joy to drive around the Carolina Roads. The Interior is eye catching with its two tones. Swooping style that match the exterior of the car. The Navigation system works great and is unobtrusive when driving. All 2010 Infiniti G37s come standard with stability control, trac-tion control, front-seat side airbags, full-length curtain airbags and front-seat active head restraints. Everything about this car is sports luxury and is a worthy competitor with “Bimmers” and Audi’s coupes. Running off the Z platform gives it the Sports car heri-

tage the Drivers generation likes without the fan boy looks. If you are a real driver and want the most out of this car I would opt for the 6 speed manual transmis-sion. The Magnesium paddles shifters are great and blip the throttle for down shift rev matching but just can’t compare to the third peddle. The all wheel steer-ing is great for lane changes but offers little feedback when getting the most out of it.

A/C, auto dim mirror, push button start with

remote entry and security with Onstar, 26 mpg

highway, xenon headlamps, all the safety

features and the ability to select your suspension

stiffness with the turn of a knob. Not only does it

come with an LSD (Limited Slip Differential) and

traction control but it has adjustable dampening

for your shocks on your independent suspension.

That’s right, this baby will control and handle

like its attached to the road like a train including

the supersonic speed.

The (HUD) Heads Up Display for the

driver and Bluetooth technology are superb

for keeping your eyes and doing what you do

best…. Driving! With the speedometer reading

200 mph, though as tested we didn’t get to prove

that fact but one thing that was interesting and

helpful was how smart the car was! The LCD

display on the instrument panel shows all your

car statistics with fuel consumption, mileage/

trip, oil pressure, maintenance, and tire pressure!

Yes as shown above the tire was low at about

15lbs and after the test drive it went flat but the

car still handled like a dream with its Goodyear

Eagle F1 Supercar G2 low profile run flats; in the

rain no less!

Overall this car has everything you can

imagine for the money. At what I consider to

be a fair price for a well performing American

muscle car that has spared nothing. The new

exterior look is that of an Italian supercar but still

keeping within the lines of the classic Corvette

styling. The Chevy Corvette is going to be one

hard sports car to get out of my head. Drive one,

you will agree they haven’t lost a beat with their

craftsmanship!

I got a chance to drive the new 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX briefly during a recent photo shoot, and I was able to draw some mixed initial conclusions. My first impressions were positive towards the styling. This generation of the WRX has a more ‘adult’ feel with less of the boy racer styling that made the previ-ous versions more of a niche market car than even the current model. It’s clear from the interior that more emphasis is placed on performance than crea-ture comforts in this model. What this car does have, though, is KICK. When pushed, this car will flat fly. I’m no stranger to fast cars, but this seems so much quicker than anything I’ve driven recently. Throttle tip-in exhibits an initial lag right off idle, as with most turbocharged cars, but by the time it sweeps toward 3K, look out! The surge of power is nothingshort of phenomenal! This particular car that I was driving had a badly slipping clutch, but even with feathering the throttle to get the clutch to bite, I could still feel this car’s potential. Clutch action was very light (no doubt a factor in its short life) and the shifter

felt nice and smooth if not a little disconnected.Handling was razor sharp with not much sacrifice in ride quality. Actually, without being able to charge out of corners due to the slipping clutch, the suspension easily handled anything I threw at it. You get thefeeling that it would be easy to handle most any cornerat 15 to 20 mph over the suggested speed with no drama. Definitely a 10 on the grin-o-meter! I’d love to get more seat time in a pre-abuse model. If you’re OK foregoing some of the creature comforts and enjoy serious sports car-like performance, the Subaru WRX seems like a worthy contender.

I have to admit that I too was oblivious to the

Royal Phuket Marina prior to a few months ago.

My friend Nicolas M, who I happened to name

my son after, was the one to open my eyes to this gem.

Nico and I lived it up in South Beach from some of

hottest pool parties on Nikki Beach, to the Shore Club,

to some of the best yacht parties at the Bell Harbor

Marina. He also hooked me up with an amazing

condo right in the heart of Miami on Ocean drive and

Lincoln Ave. My point... Nico dominated the real

estate market in SoBe, so it was no surprise when he

informed me a couple years ago that he was trading it

all for a job at one of the best resorts in the world.

THE ROYAL PHUKET MARINA.

Fast forward 2 years, I couldn’t find a hotel good

enough for a sweepstakes for our readers to participate

in, so I simply asked my good friend to partake in the

launch of this exciting publication by offering YOU a

“dream home away from home” 4 nights 5 days stay

at one of the most prestigious Villas, the Royal Phuket

Marina, by simply subscribing to our site.

Just go to www.clutchautomag.com/sweepstakes for
