CLUNES AFTER HOURS SERVICE TO CLOSE
The Clunes Health Centre has for many years provided an after-hours service to respond to health emergencies within the local community. As discussed at a meeting with community members in May this year, the increasing difficulty in recruiting and retaining suitably qualified nurses to support the after- hours on-call roster was placing the future of the service in doubt. Hepburn Health Service Chief Executive Officer David Lenehan said that despite a commitment from the Board of Management to increase the on-call remuneration allowance and an extensive advertising campaign over the last three of four months, the staffing situation has not been resolved and as a consequence the service will not continue beyond the end of November. David Lenehan said the Board had reached this decision after exploring all available options to attract staff to support the on-call roster without success and had discussed the outcome with the Clunes community at a public meeting in November. The Board has also kept the Department of Health informed regarding the staffing issues and is grateful for an allocation of funds to provide a community program to educate and support the Clunes community going forward. The education program will include what after-hours services are available on an ongoing basis. The Board in announcing the cessation of the service wishes to make it clear that the Monday to Friday (9 a.m-5p.m) emergency response arrangements will be maintained, and for after health advice the undermentioned services can be contacted. Finally the Board wishes to acknowledge the significant contribution by Clunes Health Centre Coordinator Trish Toole, the dedicated on-call nursing staff, Creswick Medical Centre and the volunteer Security Team that supported and participated in the on-call service over the past 17 years.
